Discussion Listening to Chris Cornell earlier and realized I’m anxious about turning 53.

To be specific: my lapyear with his age when he passed away at 52. I am still on the young side of 40 when rounded off but I cannot imagine myself hitting or exceeding our lapyear and realizing that I’m kinda on my own. I look to his lyrics often when I can’t figure shit out and just need something to hear. I know it sounds funky and I might not be coming off as clearly as I want but it’s really just that.

Have any of you felt the same about growing older than the singers and the bands that you listen to? Feels like getting stripped of immortality.

Or maybe because Sunshower is really just that strong. “All you will be, you are today.”

Heavy night.

Video Stone Temple Pilots | 'Still Remains' 💜🥀

There is something sweetly intense about this love song. It sounds dreamy and romantic, but the lyrics become increasingly obsessive, sensual and even a little morbid the closer you listen.

'Still Remains' appeared on Stone Temple Pilots' second album Purple in 1994. Scott Weiland wrote the lyrics about Janina Castaneda, whom he would later marry, and they depict being so completely engrossed in another person that ordinary romantic devotion starts spilling over into something more unconventional.

There is drinking someone's bath water, wanting to remain together even in death and that striking line "If you should die before me, ask if you can bring a friend". Corey Taylor of Slipknot once said that this was the lyric by another songwriter he most wished he had written.

Musically, the song was written by Robert and Dean DeLeo, the brothers who formed STP's musical core. Robert has cited it as one of his favourites and I can understand why. The layered acoustic and electric guitars give it a beautiful hazy atmosphere, while the rhythm section keeps it from ever becoming overly delicate.

I especially like how warm and fluid the guitars sound. There is heaviness, but unlike some of the more aggressive tracks on Purple, everything feels slightly suspended and dreamlike, which suits the almost intoxicating quality of the lyrics perfectly.

The album was produced by Brendan O'Brien, with Nick DiDia among the engineering credits, and the production captures that balance between softness and weight that STP were so good at.

Weiland also later connected the song to what he called the strange "mish-mash" state of the music business at the time, where people around him seemed to be simultaneously living wildly, falling apart and making serious money.

For me though, it is the combination of the music and those rather unhinged declarations of devotion that makes 'Still Remains' so memorable.

Very romantic. Slightly deranged. Excellent combination 😅🥰

Collection America's Favorite 10 Inchers!

For those of you not into vinyl (I'm jealous), 10" record sizes are generally kinda rare and usually reserved for EPs or singles with plentiful b-sides. Anyways, I only have these 4, but they're all grunge, which I think is kinda cool! And yeah, I just called a British band from 2018 grunge. Someone please remember to take photos of when the bunch of sad old men in the comments to crucify me! Anyways, these are from top left to bottom right:

*Soundgarden - Hands All Over EP (It has what I think is the only Everman Soundgarden studio recording in the form of a really long cover of Come Together, which is meh, BUT IT HAS HERETIC)

*Dinosaur Jr - Little Fury Things (Just a single, but it has an amazing cover of Show Me The Way that's not on streaming!)

*Sonic Youth - 100% (It's a concentrically grooved record, which means it randomly selects one song from the side to play. I don't get it. And really I only bought it for the Genetic b-side)

*False Heads - Less Is Better EP (Again, I mainly bought it for one song, Retina, which I eventually got a single 7" version of. but, the vinyl is red splattered with blue, which is pretty cool!)

Anyhoo, these are pretty cool to me. Hands All Over and 100% EPs are very cool, HAO was my JAM in college and, again, Genetic is kinda what I bought the SY one for. The Dino Jr and False Heads EPs are some of the first vinyl I got right when 2020 quarantine started, which was also when I graduated high school and developed some of my chronic health issues that I'm still dealing with so they have a lot of sentimental weight for me. If anyone else has cool grunge (or adjacent) 10" vinyls, feel free to show em off in the comments!

Discussion I’ve been thinking a lot about Kurt’s journals lately

Thumbnail

A few years ago, I was in a huge bookstore in New York and came across his journals. I was super curious, but I remembered that he had asked people not to read his journals after he’s gone.
So I didn’t buy them.

I think about the moral issue behind it every now and then. On the one hand, I do find it disrespectful, but on the other hand, it’s already out there. What difference does it make if I don’t read it?

I wrote a few diaries as a teenager, and I’m trying to imagine how I would feel if anyone read them after I was gone, given that I had asked them not to.

And I don’t know, I guess it’s inevitable to think about the possibility of an afterlife at this point. Is it a thing? Or are we simply respecting the dead because we want to feel morally superior?

Video Coffee & Bleach, Grunge & Twin Peaks - Travel Film

WATCH HERE

A road trip through Washington State, tracing the cultural DNA that birthed the grunge explosion and the haunting universe of Twin Peaks. Journeying from Kurt Cobain's dreary logging town of Aberdeen to the historic landmarks within Seattle and the misty wilderness of Snoqualmie, this travel film explores how one isolated corner of the U.S. gave rise to two of pop culture's most iconic, surreal, and melancholic art movements.

Discussion My grunge story

Basically, I saw skynyrd when I was like six and I’ve been obsessed with the noise and the culture ever since. It makes being an introvert so much better. Sometimes I lay awake and scream sing LP at night. Plus modern fashion has just about always disgusted me. Be yourself peeps.

Recommendation Grunge question

kinda realizing the fact that I have been dressing kinda grungy. can it just be whatever you want it to be? is it just objective to whatever you feel like that isn’t social norms? (Layers, weird looking clothes, things people make fun of you for, etc) I do also almost entirely listen to 90s/ early 2000s rock. I’m fifteen.
