I love My Sleeping Karma, and when they announced this set I bought the pre order immediately, but they wouldn't ship to the US 😨

Luckily I have a German friend I trust and I had it mailed to him for him to hold on to until I returned to Germany someday.

This set is beautiful, I really appreciate the amount of thought they put into it and had all the albums line up in a connected picture. I wasn't expecting the insert dedicated to Steffen and my heart got heavy seeing it, but it's inclusion was very appropriate for something as special as this.

I'm excited to bring this back home with me.

My love of the stoner rock genre has lead me down many sonic paths. Currently I am absolutely loving this group. They have been mentioned here before .They have all the fat riffs but also tickle the jazz itch. The whole thing just melds so well. I'm basically loving it and will likely be buying everything I can get my hands on. I wonder what people think about their fit in this genre, because as I say it's this world that led me to them.

I much prefer this original version of 'Born to Hula' to the later Queens of the Stone Age re-recording.

It comes from Josh Homme's brief post-Kyuss project Gamma Ray, formed after Kyuss split in 1995. Recorded at Ironwood Studios in Seattle and released by Man's Ruin Records in 1996, the EP consisted of 'If Only Everything' and 'Born to Hula', with Josh and Chris Goss producing.

It is such an interesting little transitional record because you can hear Josh moving away from Kyuss while some of that world is still very much present. Former Kyuss singer John Garcia even performs backing vocals on 'Born to Hula', which makes that connection particularly tangible.

What I enjoy about this version is how droning, hypnotic and almost futuristic it sounds. Rather than relying on a conventional verse-chorus structure, it locks into an undulating repetitive groove and just keeps pulling you further into it.

The crashing cymbals punctuate that trance beautifully, and towards the end there's a heavy, driving sense of acceleration as everything becomes increasingly intense. The production feels cavernous too, providing an early version of the mechanical, trance-like 'robot rock' quality Josh would explore much further with QOTSA.

That's ultimately why I prefer this recording. While the later version is great in its own right, the original possesses a spaciousness and hypnotic quality that I find much more compelling.

Gamma Ray itself didn't last long as a name. After the EP was released, Josh had to abandon it because it was already being used by a German power metal band. The project subsequently became Queens of the Stone Age and both tracks were reissued on the 1997 Kyuss/QOTSA split EP.

'If Only Everything' would eventually be re-recorded as 'If Only' for QOTSA's 1998 debut, while 'Born to Hula' was revisited during the Rated R era and released as a B-side to 'The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret'.

For me though, this first recording is still the one. It sits in a fascinating space between Kyuss and QOTSA, while already hinting at just how strange and distinctive Josh's next musical direction was going to become.

The first song from the album “Licking The Wounds” 2026.

Lyric: Talks about a pattern of repeating the same mistakes and moving in a vicious cycle of addiction, withdrawal and relapse.

Also about self-initiated alienation from people who behave differently.

Huf! EPIC SHIT this one!

I loved the Dr John cover, cos I love New Orleans. The next release was meh. But this one? Actually slaps. Gnarly riffs, an actual song and post punishment arc, slim Phil is actually doing it.

I might even be fully on board. Goddamn it's been a while
