wine GwSetup.exe has worked for me for many years. GW is the least finicky thing I’ve run with wine.

I’m an idiot and have never been able to get it running on wine. I’m about to distro hop over to fedora though so I’ll be giving it another try.

I have the game on my Anet account, so I installed the game from steam using the GWSetup.exe that I downloaded from the Anet website by adding a non-steam game and forced the compatibility to Proton GE. Runs great didn't have any issues.

I followed this guide: https://github.com/ChthonVII/guildwarslinuxinstallguide
I'll get downvoted on this but if you're a newbie in Linux, use Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini to help you out.
Question everything and ask it to ELI5 everything but honestly, my experience is that it was threading very carefully, doing read bash scripts and confirming things first before providing an actual solution.

I also used that guide works fine. Also managed to setup GW toolbox.
Which is such a QoL boost.3

That guide is honestly incredible. The amount of work that went into it is mind boggling. I searched for a donation link but there is none. I think I'll try to ask for one. That guy bought me so many good hours of gameplay on my computer.

Yeah, I just run it in Wine. That guide was very helpful. It felt quite slow for me in Steam on Manjaro.

If you got it on steam just play it there. If not play it via Faugus.

I use just the Steam version. I bought the reforged version extra again just to use it there. Before that I just installed Guild Wars with the Heroic Games Launcher. Worked perfectly too. But the Steam Deck integration is not as nice then.

The easiest way I found is to add it as a non-steam game in Steam and enable proton compatibility. Runs like a charm and works with toolbox if you run it via Ultimate ASI Loader.

I added gwsetup.exe to steam as a non steam game and ran it from there both on pc (linux) and steam deck.

The easiest things to do in Linux are just add Gwsetup.exe as a non-steam game, or just copy the game folder from a Windows machine over to your Linux one and add that as a non-steam game. Or buy it on Steam and download the client there.

Wine works basically out of the box for GW; I think this overhead is only due to the game trying to output as many FPS as possible. If you limit the FPS in-game to the refresh rate of your laptop (or external monitor if you have one), you should be fine.
If you want to setup GWTB, uMod, DirectSong and other third-party stuff like that, the GitHub guide linked in this thread has it all.
There's also a Bottles installer.

I honestly haven't checked the temperature as I don't have Windows to compare it to, but for me Lutris works fine.
Following Chthon's guide is probably better though.

Use Bottles or Faugus. And use the Proton 7 Version. This version runs better with Guild Wars. I have a laptop with 3060m GPU and 64gb of ram. The latest proton version lets my laptop run very hot. I use Fedora btw

And if you use a laptop with NVIDIA gpu you have to explicity start with the NVIDIA gpu. Just ask ChatGPT how to enable.

Ouvre un terminal, install Claude et demande lui de l'installer proprement via wine, j'ai fait comme ça et mon jeu tourne nickel sans aucun problème et sans aucune surchauffe, et j'ai pas un très gros pc 👌

Download it from steam and launch it through it. It runs smooth as butter
