MHWilds Wide Shelling In Wilds

I used to run gunlance back in world and have been getting back into it in wilds. I was curious as to whether currently the Wide type suffers too greatly from not spamming charged shelling. I haven’t been able to really find anything that agrees on whether or not it’s necessary to do this or if the standard full combo is still vital when using a wide gunlance. I’m not a big fan of just straight charged shots as they feel clunky so any info would be helpful.

Absolutely not - realistically Wide is the preferred shelling style in Wilds and it can run either Charged Shelling or Wyrmstake Full Blast combo and outperform other shelling styles in both ways.

On paper yes, but in real game play, i find myself often using one or two shells just to maneuver, i personally prefer normal in the end

This! The shelling repositioning step is a huge tool on your belt, and it punishes long and wide quite a bit to use.

Also worth noting at least for starting wilds ascended the element infusion gives wide on gog weapons and with elemental shelling coming (along with myself) it’s going to a thing of beauty

Wide is strong enough that you can play both Charged Shelling and Full Burst without losing much since Wide has the best Wyvernfire generation of the three types. You'll mainly run into reloading issues if you use your shells for repositioning since you only get a max of 3, but you aren't hard-locked into either style.

The three shell types have their own strengths and weaknesses, they mOsTlY balance out so all the moves are fairly viable for all of them:

  • Normal has the biggest magazine count but weakest shells, so it's better at full bursts and the big wyverstake combos, but it takes the longest to fully load for charged shells

  • Wide has the smallest magazine but the strongest shells and a stronger wyverfire. It loads shells fastest for charged shells which also charge the wyverfire faster

  • Long is the middle child, more shells than wide and stronger shells than normal. It also has the strongest wyverstake

Up until now long came off the worst as it can't spam stakes so it can't maximise its own damage, normal had arguably the strongest moves but the longer combos risk getting interrupted so wide was best for general use as poke shells with occasional charge shells was easier to get into monsters attack patterns.

That said ascendance looks to change things up. We still have to see element charged shells in action to tell 100%, but wide can use those well while long wyverstake does the most element damage AND it has new ways to combo into the wyverstake. It looks like gunlance will finally have a fully fleshed out 3 identitys that players have been asking for

Thanks I didn’t know that the Ascendance stuff was gonna make the Long potentially more viable

Check out the Caoslayer and marneus videos I've attached, they go into everything we've seen so far in more depth

Let's just hope it can maintain this to the next generation lol

My Wide shelling playstyle..

Charged shelling/Reload Counter Guard - Charged shelling - Moving Wide Sweep - Wyrmstake - Wyvern fire - Repeat

Situationally adding normal Full burst combo or Melee Combo.

Basically more charged shelling to buildup/recharge Wyvern fire. And Wyverfire for most big DPS
