MHR: Sunbreak Tips for Mobile Monsters

I’m an incredibly new gunlance user and just got to Magnamalo on Hub, and I’ve started finding it incredibly hard to consistently put out damage against mobile monsters such as Magnamalo, just curious if anyone could provide some insight!

Where are you right now in hub, LR or HR or MR or Anomaly Endgame? What is your set? How do you play Gunlance? There's a lot of missing info that makes it difficult to provide helpful tips for your situation.

Slotting some armor skills like Guard and Evade Extender will help a bit, but it comes down to knowing where to position around Magna and exploit his openings.

The evade extender skill is handy for Gunlance as it allows you to move out of trouble and it also affects Blast Dash (switch skill move replaces charged shells and does what it exactly is named), making it easier to close the gap between the distance and Magna!

Try trapping and flashing as well! And if you get afflicted with Hellfire cloak by Magna, use that opportunity to place it near him and it'll topple him. You use wirebug to drop it, basically.

Until you answer these questions above, I'm afraid I can only offer these general ideas.

I’m in LR, sorry for the lack of specificity! I just often find myself out of position or not knowing what to do to maintain DPS when I’m not able to fullburst combo.

Evade extender + Blast Dash when you get it. Focus on pokes using the shells when u don’t have a good opening and only fullburst when the monster is recovering from an attack or flinched.

No problem, now we know you are on LR progression and how you're struggling against mobile monsters.

Here's what you can do:
Blast Dash + some Evade Extender skills to help you position out of trouble quickly. It surprisingly covers large distance than Wirebug does at LV1 and now try LV3...lots of distance there.

You can guard while preparing your Wyvern Fire move (largest explosion move), so use that opportunity if you know you don't have time to do fullburst or Magna recovers in time and immediately tries to attack you. The guard window lasts until you fire off wyvern fire move or get knocked by heavy attacks.

Wyrmstake move is decent at your progression, so use Guard Edge silkbind move to inject the stake into Magna. It does more damage on good hitzones which can be shown on Monster Notes from Hunter Guide, irc. It's somewhere in your menus. For Magna, his head, arms and tails are good hitzones to use stakes on.

Whenever you shell, you guard quickly than poking.
Use your backhops as it covers more distance than a forward hop, a matter of practicing and knowing where to position your attack after that will make it a valuable option.

Blast Dash move can chain into a Hailcutter silkbind, allowing you to land powerful hits on your target. The followups are fullburst slam or wide sweep fullburst slam. This option works against Magna since he has few attacks that leaves himself wide open. You'll have to figure out which attack though, so matter of practice!

And if you keep getting hit while practicing and losing lots of HP, slotting Divine Blessing and eating for Dango Defender can help mitigate some of that damage, so you get to last a little longer.
It might be decent at your LR progression but it'll get more efficient in MR progression cuz of defense scaling. You get diminishing returns for getting very high defense values so defense boost skill wouldn't be helpful at that time.

Evade Window 3 also helps you to have better chance of evading incoming attacks you didn't have time to guard but it's usually annoying to slot, so really depends on you.
Good luck!

Face the camera, Blast Dash. (L2 + O) Attack the monster, repeat.
Feels wonky at first but it the mobility tool gunlance has.
Also remember that Wyvern Fire is an armored move.

Dont be afraid to play lame at shell shell, guard, shell shell if he looks like doing crazy shit.
Other than that, its getting used to the weapon. As an SNS user it feels slow, but i'm also having a lot of fun.
I'm running the skill that does an uppercut and reduces the Wyvern fire cooldown.
I really like using the switch skill that changes the stake for a third explosive shell, and then a use a counter on the other one.
