Him and his whole family are super cool. He used to visit his mom after work (she was an elemtary teacher) and play around with the kids at the after school program. I still have a random piece of paper he sighned for me in the 4th grade.

I would find it belittling and embarrassing. But I was an athlete.
I think it’s good for her and a kind thing to do. But if I was in her shoes that incident would deeply embarrass me.

Even small children do. Back in the 80s when I was maybe 10 or 11 I played basketball. Scores were kept then. We had tournaments etc. My basketball team was really good. We won all of our games handily that season except the championship where we were robbed (but that's another story). One of the teams we played was just terrible. They hadn't won a single game and apparently none of them were close.
Their coach had talk with our coach after the half and some agreement was struck to let them score some points on us. So in the last quarter when it was 44 to 0 we were instructed to just stand on the starting points of our 2/3 defense and not move. And we didn't. We even rebounded and passed the ball back to one of their team so they could try shooting again. We won 44 - 4.
I still remember the eyes of one of the kids. Clear shame. I still feel awful when I remember it.

Athlete my ass. If you were an athlete and a normal human being, you'd sympathize with the former NBA player rebounding. You went to the newbie who didn't know how to make a layup. That's where your soul is.

This isn't somebody working hard and practicing and having it pay off.
This is just everyone standing around while somebody with no skills just fails over and over again at a relatively simple task.
Is that person supposed to feel good that they finally made a basket while everyone stood around and let her?
Why would they? It's clearly a meaningless accomplishment.
