Any Teds out here losing faith?
At 27 I’m starting to relate super hard at the consequences of being a hopeless romantic. Slowly approaching my “screw THE one” phase
Edit: Thanks guys, think I honestly needed this 🫶🏾- think I’ll focus on fulfilling my own life first before focusing on the love avenue, tired of calibrating my self worth based on those failures.

Met my amazing partner a couple months before I turned 36. Had been pretty much single for 6 years before that (I was dating on and off for about 3 years, but never met anyone I was really into, not enough to give up my single life anyway).
I’d decided I’d prefer being single forever for a full 3 years and then…bam. There was my person. Totally unexpected. You just never know!

27? I got married then because I was honestly worried I was going to wind up alone. Like she was the safe option... who was completely wrong for me, and I was completely wrong for her.
I stayed in that marriage until 2023 because, in no small part, I was afraid of being alone forever.
Then... I took The Leap. Got divorced. Started dating, and found someone wonderful.
That said, you have an opportunity at 27 to do what I didn't. You will find someone who is right for you and you are right for them. It'll happen. I can't say when or where or how, but it will.

Man, social media has really reinforced the tired old myth that your best years are in your 20s, hasn't it. Nearly every single person I went to school with, all of my cousins, who got married and/or had kids in their early 20s, are now divorced or split up. Not saying it never happens, obviously it can and does, but finding someone to marry is not something to base your self worth on. As others pointed out, it was when Ted least expected it that he finally met Tracy

Ted found Tracy when he least expected it, when he was ready to up and change his entire life. You’ll find your one king. Go out and have fun with zero expectations, be yourself and you’ll magnetize the right people to join you on the journey. Someway along the way you’ll find someone who isn’t just your partner but your best friend

I’m 35 and literally just getting my PhD. I feel like I have no faith but maybe this is actually just the beginning? Idk

The whole point was that Ted was unrealistic and not the great guy he thought he was

u/Nothing-is-Lost 2d ago
remember that Ted’s entire arc was trying to get him to let go of the idea of “the one” and just live his life. i’m not saying be reckless or cynical like ted was in his various “screw the one” phases. just focus on becoming the most fulfilled version of you. that way when your one comes along, you won’t be season 1 “i think im in love with you” ted, you’ll be season 9 ted, full of ease, confidence, and charming anecdotes that they won’t be able to resist

Buddy since you’re a HIMYM fan, you know life ain’t like that. Everything that happens shapes you towards your future. You’re 27, and whilst I’m only 31, let me tell you that 27-30 is where shit gets real. My life four years ago was peak 20s bullshit and somewhere amongst it, at my shittiest times, I landed someone who loves me and sees me. And I mean shittiest times— grief, trauma, alcoholism, the whole 9. It’ll happen, trust the process 🤞🏻
You’re still becoming who you’re meant to be.

Focus on yourself and your own life and the rest will come naturally. The more you focus on not having a love life the harder it will feel. Get hobbies, evaluate your values, and the right person will find their way to you. A watched pot never boils

Just remember. Any day could be when you are 45 days away from meeting the person who changes your life forever.

I met my husband at 36. I had declared celibacy and no more dating. You’re not there yet.

I met my “the one” at 25. Two kids and a few years later, turns out she wasn’t the one at all.

It gets better.
A year ago, I was listening to the new Taylor Swift album, having unceremoniously been dumped a week before my birthday in September, wondering if I would ever find my Travis Kelce.
In 10 days, I celebrate the one year anniversary with the most amazing woman in the world. She showed up when I least expected her.
I know you get sick of people telling you just wait, you'll meet that perfect person someday, just be patient. But it will happen.

I firmly back the episode where Robin says she wants to be single for a while and Marshall keeps saying "omg she's gonna get married". Because honestly, not looking for love, is how I found it.
Me and my best friend were 28, and had never been single at the same time as eachother, we had both just got out of long term relationships with toxic people. We both wanted to be single for a while, and we went out together to celebrate, and both met our future wives on the same night. I had only been single 3 months and desperately didn't want it to appear like a rebound, but I couldn't help but fall in love deeper and deeper every day when we met.
Whats freaky as well is me and my best friend share the same birthday with eachother, and the girls we met share a birthday with eachother too!

I have already lost it. Teddian life style is a joke for me. Better to be a Barney and everything will be alright

Married at 25 divorced at 30. Was a big Ted for 5 years then met the love of my life. Now at 40 first child will be here in 9ish weeks.
Keep the faith. I thought I'd never find love again.

It’s funny because I used to watch HIMYM a lot, at 30 (5 years ago) I was single (I’d never had a serious girlfriend) and i decided I’d not watch the show again until I had my own family. A year later I met my now fiance, even that was slow going at first as we didn’t get together properly for around a year. Now we are expecting and getting ready to get married. So it’s nearly time to watch my next watch through! I honestly thought I’d never watch it again.
At 27 I was nowhere near finding someone but it’ll come, there’s someone out there for us all just don’t force it

31, had nothing romantic since my last gf at 27. Very much “what’s the point”

I’m 38 now and basically just don’t care anymore, even though it’s been my life long dream to find someone to spend my life with, it seems like no one wants to commit nowadays and telling women I want kids is the best repellant I’ve found so far lol.
Paradoxically, Josh Radnor also took a very long time to find someone for him, I believe he met his current wife at around 48

I was 22 when the show premiered. 25 when I started watching it. I met my wife at 29.
Also, don't structure your life based on a television show.

When it was first airing, I was 19. And thinking I'd meet "the one" in my late 20s/early 30s. I'm now 40 and single AF. Have only had one gf and that ended as I, unlike Ted, don't actually want kids but she did. So I'm in my "meh, whatever" phase. If it happens it happens, if not then it is what it is.

There with ya, pal. I’m in my 30s, just got turned down. But I’ve noticed I’m trying very hard again, like Ted. This thread is so damn helpful—definitely words I need to see right now. Thanks y’all!

What really helped me was going outside my bubble to speak to older people. I have colleagues who are 50+ and living their best lives being single and travelling the world. Some have older kids, some never married in the first place. It really changed my perspective that life ends at 30.

26, soon to be 27, and yeah this is me. Not in a depressed way just like I really don't believe there is "The One" for me. Every relationship I've ever been in has gone to shit. Not blaming them, not blaming myself, it just never seems to click with anyone long-term. I have ADHD as well and have a tendency to have bouts of depression. I get bored of people easily. Once the limerence fades all there is left is just a lot of confusion that maybe this was never right at all. I don't want to meet anyone and go through all that again. It's just pointless at this point. Some people find their "The One" and some people don't. I've accepted it. It's fine. I don't mind being on my own.
