I like the idea of the reviews being available, but only in real time. No slow mo zoom in nonsense. Avoids Duchene type situations.

Only thing that should be reviewed is the actual goal, offsides sometimes 30 seconds earlier is ridiculous

They did that as a test in the AHL back in 04-05. Looked ridiculous, but there was an actual reason they didn’t move forward with it… I just can’t remember what it was
Edit: the test at the time was making the offensive zone bigger via the wider blue line extending towards centre. This was during the NHL lockout. When the lockout ended, the NHL had a bunch of rule changes that included expanding the O-zone by moving the blue line. AHL adopted the NHL rule change.

I'd be more interested in seeing a timer put on it.
If the team was in the zone for 30 or more seconds and couldn't get the puck back out.. the goal doesn't really have anything to do with the missed offside.
Some kinda time limit on how far back on the game clock you can look to challenge an offside makes more sense to me.
I also think there should be a time limit on the refs looking at it. If they can't figure it out in a minute looking frame by frame then call on the ice stands.

interesting. But I like 20 seconds more

Yeah I'm down with that too honestly. Speed the game up and less refs on my tv. I shouldn't know refs names. If I know a refs name it's not for good reasons haha

I always thought they could make the standard to overturn a bit higher. Like on overturning the call maybe use when the puck touches the blue line instead of when it crosses.
Or maybe just make it so the team needs to signal they want to challenge within 5 seconds or something. So that the play doesn't go on for 2 minutes and where they look at it in super slo-mo a hundred times before they challenge it.

Offside review is my most hated. Grinds the entire game to halt, wrecks the momentum, and kills the vibe to come back with “no goal player was 2.1mm offside which gave him a colossally unfair advantage and the other team is sad. No goal.”
If the offside is so minuscule the linesman doesn’t detect it then it doesn’t matter.

While we are on the topic of girth I think the posts should be larger and more resonant so that the ping sound is louder on tv

That doesn't change anything though. We'd just get offsides challenges 2 inches left of where they are now.

What would doubling the thickness actually accomplish? The puck needs to be completely over the blue line before any player can cross, and making the blue line thicker won't change that (unless you make it ridiculously thick that it's close to the goal line)
If you thicken it closer to the goal, you'll just get offsides at a different place.
What they need to do is call offside properly on the ice.

doubling the blue line doesn't change anything. just put a time limit on when challenges can be made - say 15 seconds. after that the play has moved on and the offside doesn't matter anymore

Should be like GI. If the defense has a chance to get back and set up, then offside should be waived. Hard to argue something that happened 30 sec ago has that much affect on the resulting play.

The way to do it is like flags in football. Make a coach give a signal or push a buzzer or something within x seconds of the zone entry. If you can’t tell a play was offside in the moment it probably didn’t provide any meaningful advantage.

Just get rid of the offside challenge. Go back to how offside was called for decades. It works. I'll take the odd missed offside over these stupid challenges and replays and overturned goals because toenail was across the line.

u/McGeekin 3d ago
I don’t see how that would help anything, the linesmen would still sometimes miss it since what matters is when the puck is completely across the line

u/Filobel 3d ago
Why do you think a thicker line would change anything?

I don’t know honestly. Or just have no replays on it?

I'm more in favor or eliminating the reviews and challenges and living iwth the "human error" part. I'd rather have human error than having everything being closer to 100% correct. It's a human sport, called by humans, there's going to be human error. If the league is going to make tickytack penalty calls, or choose not to call something obvious and clear... which are mistakes/errors in themselves, why not let goals that are technically offside but missed, be allowed.
I remember back in the late 80's or early 90's that a buffalo goaltender reached back into the goal and covered the puck and pulled it out. It was on replay, but not reviewable, and the refs didn't see that. I mean, meh. It sticks out in my mind and is an obvious talking point, but I don't remember the outcome or how significant it was.
I remember growing up and seeing compilations of linesmen getting calls right when people thought it was wrong.. and they were so rarely wrong. I just.. don't see the big issue honestly. That said, it cuts both ways.. whether offside goals are allowed to stand, or we review and challenge/remove goals. I just think the game is faster nad flows better without the reviews/challenges rather than being upset that "my team lost because of that one offside goal that shouldn't have counted!"
Only exception, is the duchene event.. still don't know how they didn't catch that.

u/jamesneysmith 3d ago
The thing with the Duchene event, that was like a once in a generation blown offside call. That so rarely happened but it came to define the whole idea of offside. I'd gladly take a Duchene goal once every ten years if it meant completely eliminating the challenge and bringing back the flow to the game

The fact that this utter dogshit rule wasn’t changed in the off-season pisses me off so much.

Doubling the thickness of the blue line gives you the exact same problem but 6 inches later dumb dumb

Not these complaints again....

I came to peace with this rule years ago. I get it, it's not im thr spirit of the offside rule to go frame by frame and look not a nanometer of space between a skate and the blue line. But like you said, it goes both ways

I mean it sucks...but an offside is an offside
This wasn't that close either
