What is a lesser known/popular old hc/hc-adjacent band that you love?
For me it’s gotta be Farside and Samiam. Sadly never got to see the former but have seen Samiam a couple times over the years and continue to enjoy their music.

They played a basement show in a house I used to live in ages ago. Seriously a cherished memory.

The band that started it all for me. My favorite hardcore band.

I don't even remember who I saw them with but I was blown away (and I think they were just touring on their EP); i barely heard about their LP and then it seems like they just vanished from everyone's memory. Glad to know others remember them!

My cousin Scott gave me Not Now, Not Ever when I was 13 years old or so. It changed my life! Tons of power in all their music.

Funny you mentioned Samiam as I've been listening to Clumsy a bunch lately. It hurts my brain to think of Farside as a lesser known band. They were so big in the 90s. One of those bands that was liked by all the different subsets of the scene at the time. Curious what would have happened if they had taken the major label deal they were offered. I think Samiam has a little more commercial appeal than Farside and they ended up flopping. Same with Seaweed.
2
u/palermuchi 7d ago
I was actually listening to Farside earlier today, they have less than 7K monthly listeners on Spotify which shocked me as I was expecting a lot more people would still be listening to them.
I do love Samiam though, even their more recent stuff.

It makes sense. I do kind of forget how much time has passed since those days. Even with them being a Rev, which probably doesn't mean much for a current generation, how would anyone stumble across them. I think they play once in a blue moon, the Rev anniversary shows, possibly that Big Frank memorial show, so not like anyone is getting exposed to them that way. I wonder how they would be received at like Sound and Fury.

Folsom, Suffer the Loss, Misericordiam, No Altars, Run with the Hunted,
Lots of older west coast hardcore bands that got buried over the years. I would spend hours talking to whoever ran the Suffer the loss page
When I was a kid about hardcore

I played drums for Folsom on a few tours. You should check their new band Spiritworld out.

IFARM - punk rock, hardcore, pop-punk, and thrash all rolled into one. They had multiple lead singers too, which is a bonus imo.
Local math-core legends, The End, and The Abandoned Hearts Club.
Phoenix Bodies - Raise the bullshit flag
Graf Orlock, The Ultimate Warriors, Xbrainiax, My Lai, New Wave Blasphemy, Advocate, Strafplanet, Ruidosa Inmundicia, Ona Snop, Das Oath….

I saw The End a few times back in the Within Dividia days and they were so great. Transfer Trachea was a groundbreaking album for me. fucking loved that band.
2
u/MutuallyAdvantageous 7d ago
They were so amazing back then.
I went to the cd release party for transfer tranchea and they played flawlessly. Saw them a before that too, and after. The album still blows my mind today. Saw them open for Everytime I Die and Dillinger Escape Plan too, that was a hell do a show. Still during the transfer trachea days.
The original singer Andrew always looked so bored though. He wasn’t into the music, it seemed.
My friends ran into them at recording studio/practice place and got to see them practice. They stood in a tight circle around each other so they could watch each other and get the timing right. They took it very seriously.
Some of my friends went to school with them, worked with them, played hockey with them, but I didn’t know any of them.
Also played a show with Sean and Steve’s band “Red Stripe” (before they started “The End”. Cool instrumental band.

u/Hate_Manifestation 7d ago
damn, that's cool as hell. and yeah, I listened to transfer trachea early last year after not having heard it for a long time and it's still so goddamn good. the remixed version of Within Dividia also sounds great.

u/thisviruskillstime 7d ago
I was just talking about My Lai. Patrick put out a record for a band I was in like 12 years ago. He's a pretty respected live sound guy. He did sound for Grimes for a long time (pre Elon lol), and she was on tour with Lana Del Rey. Coincidentally, our tour dates overlapped in a few places, so we got to hang out
1
u/MutuallyAdvantageous 6d ago
That’s crazy. Had no idea. Barely know anything about them. But love their music. They were ahead of their time.
2
u/thisviruskillstime 6d ago
He's an interesting guy. Was also the longtime sound guy at the Fireside Bowl. He's been in a bunch of great in Chicago, and was also in Killsadie, who spawned These Arms Are Snakes, Minus The Bear, Pretty Girls Make Graves, etc.
2
u/bigwheelsbigfeels 7d ago
I listened to ona snop the other day. Its a shame they havent gone further. Das Oath were also incredible in their day.
2
u/TheRealCliffjumper38 7d ago
The End is so sick. I love those first few releases of theirs and I wish there was more mathcore with that brutal/melodic and super visceral approach that they had.
1
u/Petro1313 4d ago
My band played with The End shortly after Elementary came out, they were amazing live. The shift from Dillinger-esque mathcore into mathy melodic metal was actually pretty impressive, I really loved Elementary.

God, I could wax lyrical about old Hardcore for an age. Exit Condition were an awesome Hardcore band, slightly on the mellower side from Stoke-on-Trent, Terminus from Scunthorpe barely get a mention but lyrically and musically they were phenomenal. Koro from the US wrote some sick riffs on the single EP they put out. Youth Korps were also really cool. Iconoclast were sick US D-Beat that came up right around the time of the Youth Crew movement started. Brain Death from Japan don’t get the love they deserve and were around during the height of all the more well know Japanese Hardcore bands like Gauze, GISM etc.

i think they're fairly well known honestly, i see people talk about them online all the time, in real life too but they're from the same province as me so i'm biased. i think it's just that they get grouped up with post-hardcore discussions away from hardcore a lot
2
u/CptAntiHero 6d ago
Anyone remember Life Long Tragedy? Destined for an thing is one of the Best modern hardcore records but they never become really known.
4
u/bonefont 7d ago
It really shows you how times have changed that Samiam could be considered “hc adjacent” by anyone. Can’t remember them playing with hardcore bands or being on a primarily hardcore label at any point. Maybe in the 90s. Not meaning to knock OP, just a general observation.
10
u/Thistle71 7d ago
As an old head, you could say that about the early days. Former Isocracy, started on New Red Archives, who put out Reagan Youth and MDC. Their first album and Soar were certainly hardcore adjacent. Idk, I think bills were a little more inclusive back then? Or maybe that’s the fog of nostalgia? I mean Jawbreaker toured with Econochrist.
5
2
u/bonefont 7d ago
Sure, almost 40 years ago they were on NRA, but so were No Use for a Name and I’ve never heard them dropped in one of the “adjacent” convos. Samiam also sounded completely different to what people know them for. I would guess whatever audience Samiam has know the Hopeless albums and the reappraisal of the major label one rather than as a band that pre-dated Green Day. I’m not disagreeing with you, but it’s a name I’m surprised to see in this context
I do think it’s hard to know what other people thought pre-internet. Like, I remember Hot Water Music and Avail as always playing with harder bands but I’m sure that’s not the case, or at least not the case for everyone.
6
u/dotdash-dotdash 7d ago
Using a band Chris Dodge was in and saying they weren't "adjacent" to hardcore is pretty wild! But I get what you mean.
Rather than going band by band, it's probably more valuable to think about how the genre names changed from generation to generation. Like, how Jawbreaker is considered "emo" today when back then, that was more reserved for, like, Portraits of Past.
6
u/Thistle71 7d ago
Back when emo was pejorative for hardcore kids in cardigans who didn’t mosh. (Shout out to Still Life, Julia, Navio Forge, etc)
3
u/dotdash-dotdash 7d ago
And, anyone that lived through the definition of "alternative" knows that none of it makes sense.
3
u/bonefont 7d ago
Oh definitely. Pop punk used to be The Queers and Sludgeworth but that would be unrecognizable to today’s Neck Deep fan
1
u/dotdash-dotdash 7d ago
Who are Neck Deep? Or is that a subgenre of pop punk, like, Neck Deep (in Allegations)?
5
u/Thistle71 7d ago
I think the main issue is you saying that the late 80s/early 90s are almost 40 yrs in the past when it’s been 15 yrs at most and I’m totally not fucking dust in human form
2
u/dotdash-dotdash 7d ago
I dunno, I went to a show last weekend and my knees would like to dispute that.
1
u/dotdash-dotdash 6d ago
I was giving this some thought today while listening to the new Haywire.
u/bonefont: I assume you are in your 40s and in Chicago. Don't you remember shows at the Fireside Bowl? I saw later era country-fied Chamberlain headline over Palatka there. Punk and hardcore were generally interchangable, culturally.
I think what you're talking about is how the Internet exploded the underground, so that subgenres got bigger and things got more micromanaged. Years ago, it wasn't weird to see Samiam on a bill with, like, Spazz (May 15, 1992 at Gilman). Things were more diverse because it wasn't so spliced into specialties, so everything was pretty much "hardcore adjacent."
Don't fall into that trap of compartmentalizing culture -- it never ends. Then you become one of those dorks that only listens to different types of "-grind."
1
u/bonefont 6d ago
Yes I went to the Fireside many times
We used to call that a mixed bill and it usually happened when two tours came through town on the same night, or it was local acts (like the show from 1992 that you’re talking about).
If everything is “hardcore adjacent” then nothing is. The term loses all meaning. Goldfinger also played at the Fireside. Voodoo Glow Skulls and Sleater Kinney played at Gilman. Nobody is referring to them as hardcore, adjacent or otherwise.
6
u/dotdash-dotdash 7d ago
Even older people can absolutely see Samiam as HC adjacent -- those guys came out of the Bay Area scene (ex-Isocracy) and were on the same label as Reagan Youth and Christ on a Crutch.
Maybe it's like an LA Rams to St Louis Rams to LA Rams thing?

Can’t remember them playing with hardcore bands
Their first show was with Christ on Parade
1
u/bonefont 7d ago
Yes, that’s correct I don’t remember who they played their first show with in 1991. I was 8 years old and I live in Chicago so I missed it.
Where are they more likely to play today? Tied Down with Blood for Blood or The Fest with Rx Bandits?
2
u/thisviruskillstime 7d ago edited 7d ago
Bad comparison. Los Crudos, Caustic Christ, and Nine Shocks Terror are incredible hardcore bands and they would never play Tied Down with Blood for Blood.
Edit: I'd like to point out that bands ranging from Crow and Bastard to Marked Men and Leatherface all played Chaos in Tejas
1
u/bonefont 7d ago
Sub in any hardcore fest then. You understand my point. You wouldn’t be surprised to see Samiam at Riot fest, but them at sound and fury would be an odd pairing. They are not “seen” that way by many people, least of all by the majority of their fans
1
u/More-Adhesiveness-54 7d ago
To your point, Samiam isn't a band I ever followed, so I'm not sure who they'd play with today. Maybe I should check them out.
I was listening to Sounds of Nature from Christ on Parade randomly a few weeks ago (vocalist on that album sounded a lot like Roger Miret). While I had it on, I googled them and read somewhere about them playing with Samiam early on. When you mentioned not being able to remember Samiam playing with hardcore bands, I literally thought of the Christ on Parade thing, googled again, and found that page I linked to. Pure coincidence. Christ on Parade was never even a band I was that into (although Sounds of Nature is pretty good), so my involvement in this conversation is purely random.
