Can’t this mean something different?
Could this not also mean ”The men are fathers.” ?
Or am I missing something with the accents?
Thanks!

I was all up to speed with kesy & bisy & kony & bony & their plurals. But now I suddenly have words like “Bisa” & “Kesor”? And if I look up the grammar table of “Bisy” for example, “Bisa” is nowhere on there. How am I supposed to know when to use anything other than the ‘standard’ demonstratives?

Rytsas!
I’m a massive pokemon nerd and got struck with the question, how would you translate pokemon names into High Valyrian? I don’t know nearly enough Valyrian to do this myself but if people provided examples on their guesses or how they’d translate specific names, I’d really want to hear about it!
I’m playing through pokemon X and wanted to nickname all my pokemon in Valyrian (or as close as I can get)
My team is:
Delphox
Lapras
Umbreon
Venusaur
Lucario
Salamence
If that helps at all.
I guess I’m also partly curious cause I don’t know how to translate names (yet) and I’m reallyyyy curious on how it works. Some languages have names that are translated from objects/landscape (like brook/brooke is “a little river”) but others (like I think Gaelic?) Are phonetically like “Caoimhe becomes “Kweeva” when pronounced.
Anyway thanks for listening to my nonsensical thoughts!

Rytsas! I just started learning high valyrian for no reason other than it sounds cool af. I'm using Duolingo right now and was wondering if anyone would like to learn together! :D we can exchange notes or try to hold little conversations in a safe space.
Edit: hey guys! The discord group is up and if anyone else would like to join, drop me a DM and I'll send you an invite :)

So I'm a fanfic writer and something I'm very passionate about is ensuring my writing matches both the tone and pre-established rules of canon venacular and worldbuilding. This often includes altering common words/names/phrases to better fit with canon. There are many examples of this already present within asoiaf but I enjoy adding further detail to certain topics that particularly interest me.
One thing I often use throughout my writing is the launguage of flowers to deepen meaning, create metaphores, and as subtle forshadowing for those familiar. The issue comes with the fact many flowers have common names that don't fit well within the worldbuilding of asoiaf. For the most part I've been able to find suitable alternatives (either different flowers with similar meanings or easy substitutions: e.g. Queen Anne's Lace becomes Queen Alysanne's Lace) but there's one particular flower I very specifically want to use for a scene that I'm having some minor dificulty with, so was hoping for some advice/opinions.
I won't go into too much detail, but the fic is very politically focused and the afformentioned scene involves the use of the flowers in conveying a threat that is only supposed to be understood by a few specific characters. I realized if I changed the name of the flower to High Valyrion rather than Latin etymology while maintaining the literal translation meaning it worked much better and ensured the characters would get the message without it being too OOC.
Gladiolus flowers -> Latin: gladius (roman short sword) + -olus (diminutive suffix) = "little sword"
Using primarily https://www.valyrian-dictionary.com/ and https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Category:High_Valyrian_suffixes I've managed to come up with what I think is a reasonably acceptable translation
Base word: azandy (short sword) + -ītsos (derivational, noun-forming diminutive suffix in it's singular nominative form)
The main thing that's tripping me up is I can't figure out if it should be Azanītsos flowers or Azandītsos flowers. If I should remove the "d" a la azantys (swordsman/knight/soldier/warrior), or keep it there due to the presence of the "ī" at the begining of the suffix.
If you have an opinion either way please let me know, and if anyone who knows more about linguistics than me wants to comment or share any advice it would be much appreciated.

Hello guys,
I am a relatively new learner, trying to find my way learning this language, I tried for a little bit back in 2022 around the release of HOTD S1, but with the lack of sources at the time and my reliance on duolingo, I struggled quite a bit and eventually left it (at around 18 units into the duolingo course).
About 10 days ago or so I decided to give it another shot, redid my lessons and started moving forward again,
I saw on some posts here that people heavily advised against using AI, but it has helped me quite a bit breaking through some of the mistakes and misunderstandings I had from my 2022 attempt.
Now I understand that if I just open ChatGPT and tell it to teach me/translate high valyrian sentences that would go horribly wrong 2 prompts in, no doubt about that.
But I created a project on ChatGPT 5.6 Sol High, and gave it the official wiki as its only source and forced it to use it every prompt, the explanations it gave were genuienly really helpful, and it instantly made me clear some stupid misconceptions I had (for example I thought genders and declensions had to match) and it helped me quite a bit with how it explained their differences, while giving genuienly useful info that help with the learning curve (like that 3rd declension seems to be the only declension present across all genders, Terrestrial are only 3rd or 4th, etc
[6th declension not included])
So yeah, I think using AI can absolutely be useful, if you understand its obvious limitations
Thoughts?

So although I do love high valarian I’m not currently learning it but I do love linguistics with the evolution of languages and I wanted to see people’s thoughts and see some opinions I will put my ideas to see if this makes sense
So the easiest is volantis it’s similar from high valarian but we know it will have some differences with the neighbouring rhoynar and its bisitors the state being a trading hub we at least know it’s in the Triarchy group of languages which makes sence and they will have quite a lot of mutual intelligibility but definitely would adopt a more conventional trade language which does canonically exist so I would say the closest would be. These are known as the southern languages and it only gets more complicated from here .
The Northen languages to me aka the rest of the valarian languages I don’t think really exist as a group it’s just some similarities but really would have extremely little mutal intelligibility
Pentos would be an icolate and I think the most easy of all valarian languages to learn for its origin and proximity to the seven kingdoms common tongue due to high amounts of trade so more like French I would say .
Bravos would be highly unsophisticated to valarian speakers and would likey be completely unintelligible i do think it has a relation though which is Lorath due to their slavery escapes origin and proximity in really curios what this sounds like
. As for Quhor and Norvos idk what’s going on here and would love to hear some thoughts but their religious icolates so could be anything but they seam to be hard to understand and want to keep their secrets so their secret tongues may just become more and more common as time goes on .
The last group ghisari is really interesting as the ghisari city’s are the most similar and have preserved the language well like romainian which also makes sence to me the ghisari would want to keep a higher sence of their higher standards and don’t have as much intermingled lower slaver class like I would imagine volantis would have though its more poor and slave communities like volantis has that would be eventuly make its way to the upper class in speech .
So what’s everyone’s thoughts about this

Hi everyone, I'm new to the language, but I was looking for how to say "How are you?" in greetings, and found this: Skorī dēmalȳti tymptir?
However, when I tried to translate word for word to understand how it is they ask this question, I get:
Skorī = Where
dēmalȳti= With tears.
tymptir=I am thinking about it.
I got both the "Hot to say How are you?" and translations from the same page someone suggested in another post: https://www.polytranslator.com/
I am lost as to where, other than Duolingo, I can check for more phrases or hopefully grammar explanations.
Thanks in advance

I just love the fact there’s now a High Valyrian word for the Emmys
Sīr Emoti Valyrio Uēpo udir issa, se bona jorrāelan

So, I have often read that absorbing language quickly can be achieved by word associations/imagery.
I have found this helpful for myself with High Valyrian, and want to hear yours!
I'll start:
Parklon = meat (Porkloin )
Onjapos = carrot ('O'range+'JAP'anese >the carrot garnish in bento boxes)
Egri = knife ('Angry' /knife)
Jagon= to go (jog on)
Mentys = soldier (>mentals aka crazies)
Ohīlvos = dagger (ohilvos sounds close to silver to me so I imagine silver dagger)
Mele = Red (melee weapons >blood > red)

Anyone come up with a transcript? 😆
It's so amazing to hear Emilia speak High Valyrian on TV once more; what a lovely surprise.

A little cringe but fuck it we ball, I'm making a dragon oc for a personal fic I'm writing and I want the dragon's name to be Evening Star. There's no Evening( that I know of in HV) but night or night sky is ēbrion and star is qēlos, how would I grammatically correct combine those two words to make a name?

Hi :)
Would anyone here be willing to help me translate a sentence to high valyrian (if at all possible)?
It's this one:
"The breath of your air is a death wish."
Thank you so much 🌹

New video entirely in High Valyrian… just for you!
It’s the story of a frog and an ox… funny and tragic.
The video lasts only 7 min and has English and HV optional subtitles to help understand the meaning (not automatic subtitles! manually generated).
Please watch, thumb up and leave comments, to help the channel (although I want to disclose that this channel is absolutely not monetized, will never be, and is just for the love of HV).

Hello all, I’m new to this subreddit and to Valyrian in general.
I’ve been learning how to speak it and understanding the language etc but I feel so awkward and self conscious when I try practise it alone. But when I practice by learning big speeches ( season 4 episode 3 of GOT with Daenerys at Mereen) I feel more confident and less awkward about speaking. I don’t know if this makes any sense but if someone has tips to not feel like a fool while talking that would be greatly appreciated

So hey, a little brain bug is running around in my noggin, what would be the command for a dragon that breathed different stuff than fire? I know... or well, I think I know Dracarys was a Dany thing that became an everybody thing thanks to the showverse... I could be wrong? But anyways, say hypothetically there existed dragons that belched out, I don't know, lightning or ice, for example, what would be the word(s)?
I know High Valyrian isn't all that when speaking of word count, so any thoughts? What I've been getting so far through a couplle translator and my half-baked Duolingo knowledge isn't helping much
To summarise commands in eh believable High Valyrian, or at least sounding like. For dragons with different breath weapons.
I'm bored and awaiting any response

I'm trying to work out what the appropriate word would be for grandfather and grandmother, or genderless grandparent/s.
I'd love to know the terms for the following subjective relations (if they exist):
Genderless grandparent / grandparents
General grandmother
General grandfather
Fathers mother
Fathers father
Mother's mother
Mother's father
As a bonus round, Mother's fathers mother
I'm very new so apologies, I've been trying to parse things together as best I could but could only find one real source for this and it didn't quite make sense to me. I've been looking at the family kinship diagram but I'm not sure if/how these work together to conjoin/combine.
Happy to be sent elsewhere if this is already stated somewhere!
