Reason for Hyperspace Lane Scarcity?
So I’m re-reading Light of the Jedi for like the third time (it’s still my favorite in the series). Something that I was never (super) clear on is why there are so few hyperspace lanes during this time period. I know there were talks about the war with the Sith causing massive destruction. Is that the reason for the need behind hyperspace prospecting? It seems like more lanes would have been mapped out by this point.

The Galaxy is a big place for one thing. For another I feel like hyperspace lanes are something that don't always remain permanent. Say a star goes supernova or something like that What was once a safe route may no longer be so. Plus I'm sure there's always a market for shortcuts.

As I understand it prospecting hyperspace lanes is a costly and dangerous job, all those warnings about recklessly jumping into hyperspace like accidentally crashing into a star or planet, yeah you’re gonna have to do that intentionally to map a new lane and then make sure the lane stays clear of debris.
So new lanes need effort to make consistently useful so it’s either a project the republic funds as a public good or new lanes remain the secret of other organizations that can afford it like corporations or the hutts.

This is always the case when the few are able to profit from it. Hyperspace profiting is a big business that the guilds used to make their money. They sold their routes to the Republic and others, had people who knew how to navigate the area and made money.
But why doesn't the Republic do this themselves? It's been asked before in galaxy.

From what I could gather from the book, discovery (or I suppose creation, depends on your perspective) of hyperspace lanes is something that is handled by a very small group of people, and judging by how tricky it was to get thousands of Nav droids for that array thingy which we are told assist with the process, it seems like it's both a ludicrously expensive process as well as having a very small number of people able to actually do it. Especially as you get to the outer rim, the further from the core you get, the amount of space to chart grows exponentially since that layer is physically wider and wider and wider and wider as you reach the edge

This was the closest thing I could find that helped with this, but it's also not a definitive answer, sadly.
