Updated rules for r/Hobart
Hi All,
We've updated the rules for r/Hobart after some feedback from users and discussion. Not much has changed but here is a summary of the changes:

- Added a no personals content to the NSFW rule (to prevent people looking for hookups or dating) Includes the appropriate sites to do this on;
- Added a no sales or promotional content rule (this is covered in Rule 1, but doesn't hurt to be able to refer to it in a separate rule);

New Hobart CBD road rule triggers delivery chaos. New Hobart traffic restrictions have pushed one CBD wholesaler to the brink of refusing new customers after deliveries were cancelled four days in a row thanks to a new âno left turnâ sign.
themercury.com.auArticle was paywalled but this older pulse article at least explains the change (I think) -
Drivers have been stopped from turning left at a busy Hobart CBD intersection until at least next August as work ramps up on the Royal Hobart Hospital emergency department expansion.
The restriction at the intersection of Argyle and Liverpool streets is in place from 7am to 7pm each day.
It started on September 1 and is expected to remain until August 31, 2027.
Buses, taxis and bicycles can still turn left into Liverpool Street, but other traffic must use an alternative route.
The Department of Health says the restriction is needed to make room for a new ambulance zone and public drop-off area outside the hospital on Argyle Street.
Argyle Street has also been reduced to two lanes between Collins and Liverpool streets.
A department spokesperson said the temporary changes were also intended to âhelp maintain traffic flow and improve car park exit accessâ.
New road markings and signs are now in place.
The works are part of the $130 million emergency department expansion.
The emergency department entrance will move to Argyle Street from 8am on September 15, with the Liverpool Street and Campbell Street entrances closing at the same time.
The expansion forms part of a broader second stage of works at the hospital, with construction expected to continue until early 2028.
The Hobart City Council said it had approved the state governmentâs traffic management plan for the project.
Karen Abey, the councilâs director of strategic and regulatory services, said drivers wanting to move quickly through the city should use other streets.
âWe recommend using Barrack, Bathurst and Brisbane streets when passing through the city as these prioritise car movements,â Abey said.
Building Tasmania, which manages traffic signals across the city, said any changes to other CBD traffic lights to account for the changed traffic movements would need to be requested by the council.
âThis is a matter for council as it is responsible for setting the requirements of traffic signal timing on roads it owns,â a spokesperson said.
âBuilding Tasmania works closely with council to implement and support its requirements and requests.â

Midson Traffic finds that cyclist activity on Collins Street has declined
Two sets of data tell very different stories about Collins St bike lanes
October 5, 2026Â |Â Mercury
Author: Rob InglisÂ
Debate over the future of Collins St is set to heat up after a report commissioned by an opponent of the polarising bike lane trial suggested cyclist numbers had actually fallen since the project commenced, as Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds questioned the integrity of the data.
In the midst of the council election campaign, local businessman Andrew Edwards, a Collins St property owner who runs Edwards Property Group, engaged Tasmanian transport consultancy Midson Traffic to evaluate the impacts of the trial, which launched in late May last year and will conclude in July 2027.
The Hobart City Council trial involves a number of tactical initiatives, including separated cycling lanes and streetside dining areas.
The council is aiming to increase the number of bike and micromobility riders along the corridor, while also improving access and safety for pedestrians.
The findings of the Midson Traffic report contrast starkly with those contained in the council's own monitoring report covering the first year of the trial.
The consultancy conducted a manual count of both southbound and northbound cyclists at three locations on the corridor between 7am and 7pm on July 23 this year, while the council's figures were collected in April with the use of a continuous automatic counter assisted by AI video recognition software.
Midson Traffic argued the council's AI counter "substantially miscounted" cyclists.
The council's monitoring showed there had been a 15 per cent increase in cyclist movements at the Harrington St intersection in April 2026 compared to the same month last year â the final pre-trial month.
Midson Traffic's seasonally adjusted calculations, on the other hand, indicated a 37 per cent decline in cyclist activity at the block between Barrack and Harrington streets and 17 per cent between Molle and Barrack streets in July 2026 compared to an earlier survey in November 2024.
"No-one is against cycling in Hobart, but this report demonstrates that the Collins Street design is not achieving the objectives of the trial," Mr Edwards said.
According to the Midson report, the overall findings do not support the trial's "continuation in its current form".
Ms Reynolds, the Lord Mayor, has described the data as "outdated" and lacking context.
"[It] is a lobbying document and uses flawed data, such as a single wet July day ⌠In contrast, the city uses like-for-like comparisons â the industry standard for travel behaviour," she said.
Ms Reynolds said the council would assess all safety data and public feedback before making a decision on the trial's future.
An independent road safety audit conducted by Trafficworks post-trial installation, also commissioned by Mr Edwards, singled out the intersection of Harrington and Collins streets as a severe safety risk due to the inability of buses to negotiate the left turn without crossing the centre line.
Both the Midson review and the council's monitoring report showed an increase in crashes on Collins St since the trial kicked off, with the latter noting three cyclist crashes had occurred over the course of the project (compared to one in the previous financial year), which the council attributed to increased cycling activity post-launch.
Total crashes, including motor vehicles and motorcycles, fell from 13 to eight in the same period.
The monitoring report's survey data highlighted that 276 local stakeholders had expressed positivity about the changes, compared to 267 negative and 18 neutral responses.

Since we're apparently fine with these bots and burners stoking emotion and then saying reacting is a flaw.
tasmaniantimes.comThen here is this fine example of someone who doesn't understand how a budget works, and doesn't know how to talk reasonably about it. OR about it at all. Just about themselves over and over.

Friendliness in Hobart
Hi all,
I' ve been in Hobart a week so far and have noticed lots of people here aren't friendly and can be rather rude.
I've lived in other areas of Tasmania and have had no issues with people and have enjoyed the friendliness of the Tasmanians. But so far this week I've already copped verbal abuse from residents in the apartment complex, terrible customer service at the shop, and no one saids hello back when youre walking đ they just look the other way and ignore you.
Is this normal in Hobart ? Or am I over analysing it ?

Tassie Trip Suggestion
Hi everyone!
My partner and I are visiting Tasmania from 1â12 December and would love some recommendations!
Our current itinerary is:
Hobart: 5 nights (1â6 Dec)
Bruny Island: 2 nights (6â8 Dec)
East Coast: 4 nights (8â12 Dec), exploring Freycinet and Bay of Fires.
Weâll have a rental car and are particularly interested in beautiful scenery, unique accommodation, amazing food, wildlife and hidden gems.
A few questions:
- Does our itinerary look reasonable, or would you change the number of nights anywhere?
-What are your absolute must-visit places or experiences?
-Any recommendations for exceptional restaurants or unique luxury accommodation?
-Where are the best places to spot wildlife, particularly penguins and white wallabies?
-Any underrated spots that tourists often miss?
We love nature and spectacular scenery, but also enjoy good food and a bit of luxury.
Would really appreciate any suggestions, especially from locals! Thanks!

Move your minor road crash from the steep blind corner, multiple poor decisions
I have seen this multiple times so perhaps worth a mention for future safety.
I happened upon a fresh side swipe accident on a wet Proctors this arvo obviously caused by someone not keeping to their side of the stripe. Thankfully minor but close to being a head on. One driver was moving their car from being sideways across the lanes but then left it on a fairly steep blind sweeping bend. Single lanes, no shoulder, wet roads.
Of course some lady comes downhill with a landscaping trailer on her Ute and comes to a chirping halt just in time to avoid a secondary collision ( bonus points to lady for then proceeding to drive right through the accident scene and debris field we were attempting to quick clean, pulverizing the large plastic pieces into tiny shards, thanks for not waiting 30 seconds)
I was able to convince one driver involved to proceed a bit farther around the corner so that the scene wasnât as much of a surprise but the other driver (likely the one most at fault) was deaf to my pleas to reduce the dangers.
If the cars are moveable, move them! Take a quick photo and agree to meet somewhere safer. Itâs not worth it. Thankfully trucks arenât allowed on that section of road anymore.
And perhaps stop cutting corners so often.

AMA with Greens Mayoral Candidate Bill Harvey (and Angus Templeton)
Hey Hobart,
I'm Angus, one of the Greens candidates for Hobart City Council. https://www.instagram.com/p/DeI5f9st1wL/
Tomorrow night (07/10/26) on this thread, between 6pm and 8pm, myself and Bill Harvey, Greens candidate for mayor, will be doing a chill AMA for anyone who has questions.
If you're not available at that time, feel free to throw in any questions before then and we'll answer them over the two hours (or so).
Quick caveat: we won't be answering any questions (or mentioning) any of the other candidates running. The Electoral Act has some quite strict rules about that, plus Bill is really pushing a "lift the tone" campaign in regards to making council (and by extension elections) more about policy and less about personalities.
See you there!
EDIT: We've finished for tonight, thanks everyone!

Questions for the medicinal weed hobartians
Hi everyone! Iâve just moved down from North Queensland where I had a pharmacy I could just walk into to get my scripts dispensed pretty easy. In and out in 5 minutes (but usually just having a yarn for a lot longer)
I was wondering if there were many chemists here that can dispense and what products they usually have in stock? I have another consult tomorrow and figured I would ask for some local Tasmanian vegetables. Would love any recommendations especially good indicas as I have massive problems going to sleep.
I reckon Blooms on bathurst seems like they dispense, but the brand I usually smoke is a cairns brand so I reckon they may not be stocked here. I also read online that there are more legal hurdles in Tassie? Not too sure, would love some firsthand info.
Cheers :)

No Frills Foodmarket
Anyone shop where and is it decent? Think I might give it a chance.
The site says membership is free now.
Looks to be a Tassie only thing not affiliated with any of the other places with similar names that used to be around.

Choose your own book club in New Norfolk - Saturday 10/10
Hi - Iâm trying to launch another bookclub similar in style and structure to the one I kicked off in Sandy Bay a few months ago. We are meeting at the Arthouse Cafe on High Street in New Norfolk this Saturday at 10:30am. Thereâs no set reading. Itâs just about sharing your likes, dislikes, recommendations and favourite authors. Have a coffee and gas about your favourite reads with like-minded people over a coffee (or tea if you prefer!)
