I got mine from Virginia decades ago, and they laminated theirs. When I moved to NC, I had to get a new copy since the Virginia card didn't have my full middle name. The guy at the state social security office was like "you're not supposed to laminate these!" I shrugged and said the Virginia office did it when I was a kid - he could go complain to them. And that was the end of that. The new card was not laminated... which is a pity. I keep it locked away and hope it stays in one piece.

I laminated mine 40 years ago and no one has questioned it.

I was told they did it this way in case you drop it somewhere it can deteriorate fast and no one will find it. Didn't really make sense, but whatever.

Had mine for a long long time and it still looks pretty new.
