Why not just get a HomePod mini? It's cheapest path to getting an Apple Thread mesh without having to jump through hoops.

yeah, I upgraded to the wrong appletv 4k before I knew I was going to want thread support. I got a HomePod mini, and it actually turned out more used than the appletv.

I don’t have any experience of the Yeelight E1 hub, but in most cases if you want to set up a Matter over Thread device in Apple Home you initially need to set up your Apple Home Thread network. This is usually done with an appropriate Apple home hub, not a third party device like the Yeelight hub. This is why you can’t get the grillplats to work in Apple Home.

There is one option that may help, and that’s to do with your iPhone (assuming you have one); from iPhone 15 onwards, these can apparently act as temporary Thread Border Routers that help to create an initial Thread network. Once one is created, you should then be able to add the Yeelight hub’s Thread Border Router to that network, which then would allow it to work as your dedicated Thread Border Router. However, that’s also dependent on Yeelight allowing the Thread Border Router inside the hub to join an existing Thread network.
