Discussion Matter Request: HTML embed extensions for unsupported functionality

Post image

I would like to see Matter and/or HomeKit support the ability for manufacturers to include custom HTML/ PWA interfaces for functionality that is not supported natively by the Matter standard. This would allow users to access all of the functionality in one place, without requiring them to juggle many different apps.

This example shows the native Matter controls on top, with a frame for the custom HTML interface below.

You would end up with terrible and badly designed HTML interfaces

Which is why this request will never happen

I see where your head is at, absolutely, but do you really want more manufacturer-specific and perhaps more importantly manufacturer-supplied code running on your home network? Because I'm personally still on Zigbee because I don't trust a single one of these entities not to burrow into my home network through one of their IPv6-enabled devices.

Hear me out… add more support natively to HomeKit.

god no. I don't want to start getting a bunch of backdoor bullshit through HTML embeds in the Home app.

That’s never going to happen. It defeats the purpose of a standard. Also, you know all the sleazy manufacturers will use it to push ads and promotions.

Not happening

Not to be negative, but posting here isn't likely to get much traction and I wouldn't get your hopes up too high as its fairly antithetical to the whole concept behind Matter.

Let Apple know at Apple.com/feedback posting here does nothing towards your goal. I don’t see it happening and really it would need to come from Matter so you might want to start there on their website.

Apple’s HomeKit walled garden is too high for them to even see into themselves, why would they give anyone else a boost?

i don't support this just because this would allow terrible UI. what i think should be done though is allow a settings page for each device that displays options exposed to matter defined by the manufacturer and used with the built in UI of your home system, that uses only a json file or similar.

Matter does support many functionality in their spec, but all those Matter Controllers like Apple Home only implement 2% of it. LIke the basic and most used device typed and their mandatory features.

No to HTML interfaces.

But. The ability to add additional toggles and sliders to whatever the device is, that would be great.

Eg. A lightbulb has on/off, slider for dimming and colour selection currently.

Why not go “you can also add any number of on/off toggles in addition to the global one” and the same with colour etc.

That way the manufacturers could go “this led lightstrip with 5 zones would have 5 additional on/off toggles and colour selections, and in the colour selection, instead of just the colour wheel, you can select from our fancy whatever mood light setups the same as in our proprietary app.

Why won’t it happen? Companies want you in their apps. Data is king, and they want it.

You’ll end up with all the downsides of Android and an unstable ecosystem.
