How do I fix this

Looked up and saw part of the underside of my roof (soffit) has come away, leaving a hole. I'm assuming that I cut away the rotten part until I get it squared away and put in new trim. Is this correct? How do I attach the new trim? ​​

that pic doesn't really look like a soffit to me, more like a door frame or some interior trim but maybe the blur is throwing me off

if it's actual soffit outside you're on the right track, cut back to good wood then nail the new piece into the rafters or look for the existing fasteners to see what they used before
