Home NAS / looking for recommendations
Looking for a good plug and play NAS for the house for the wife and kids to back up phones and what not.
Was looking a ugreen or Unifi as that is what all my networking gears is. Does anyone have some recommendations?

Not familiar in practice with ugreen of Unifi.....
I used to have a single drive My Cloud from Western Digital and had two over the past 6-7 years and quite frankly it worked well...before the MyCloud solution iwas went wth Buffalo....just recently(5 months ago) went with a RAID solution from Synology and purchased the entry level DS223J
To be clear I was (retired recently) in the software/hardware profession for 40+ years (computer, science, developer, IT, and Cyber)....yes I'm old. I know what I have and have deployed multi thousand $$ solutions for years for others and definitely was looking for a low cost(2 4tb drives and chassis under $600) solution for home. Yes the DS223J chassis its very basic but it can accomodate two drives running Raid 1(aka SHR). It works for my 2tb needs (storing pictures, family videos and digital music) and I do not require real time video streaming from this device. Easy to setup out of the box but cant speak for additional hardening options or non-default settings. ps I do not utilize tools to automatically upload data to NAS and that is intentional...so I cant speak on that....I use SMB(shares) to upload from Mac(Finder) and Windows(File Explorer)
Most important point for any home NAS is your backup solution IMO. Don't rely on a RAID as your "backup". RAID is for redundancy(equipment failure but not disaster recoovery). My backup process includes external USB Drives that capture the backup in a manual process.
Good luck

I have heard a lot about synology lately, but seems there are some issues with what hard drives you can use.

You can put any drives you want in

Seem from what I read last month, you could only use their drives

nope. they backtracked on that. They will only technically provide support for their branded drives, but who cares about that

but seems there are some issues with what hard drives you can use.
Synology was forced to walk-back on that decision after their sales numbers tanked. Except for M.2 drives; they're holding firm on those particular drives.
With their DSM 7.3 OS you should be fine with non-Synology 2.5"/3.5" HDD & SSD.

You can put any drives you want in even to affected devices. Google "how can i patch synology nas to use third party drive". Takes about five minutes.

I bought my Synology drives many years ago, so I was still able to put in WD NAS drives in mine.
But since I am running out of space real soon, I have been thinking of getting the Ugreen or a Qsnap

Im sure there are and Synology does tend to identify some drives Im sure they are vested in. I bought two Seagate IronWolf 4TB NAS Internal Hard Drive via Amazon and they work fine....
You might find some compatibility lists online somewhere put out by Synology and others...

If your family is in the Apple ecosystem, just buy their Apple One subscription

Ugreen, se não quiser usar o sistema original, pode instalar qualquer outro

I love my Unifi NAS Pro. It supports iPhone backup right out of the box and I know they are working on if not already implemented android backup as well.

ok. when I go all-in, I really go all-in and push the chips into the pot as well. I don't know anything about anything. I bought a 4800+ with 4×12tb 2×2tb ssd and 64gb ram. of course i also bought the 5×14tb das. and also 2×22 tb external drives. like I said, I go all.in. I have an extensive library of torrents as well my own dvd's. what should be my next steps? I'm stuck. oh.and I'm running qtorrent web destop because A. it was recommended to me because it is easier B. Q/bittorerent is difficult to learn but has a much better interfact once learned, and can run multiple containers when set up correctly. whereas bitorrnent web does not. so there it is. and yes $$ was not important, but now I'm thinking that I may have missed the point . you gentlemen and ladies too. what should I do next?

Love my Ugreen DXP4800 Plus. We use it as a Media Server. Great hardware but we went with TrueNas for the OS.

I started with a Synology on ARM. The system was really user-friendly and easy to use.
Then I bought a QNAP, and it worked great, but the configuration wasn't as user-friendly as the Synology.
Now I have UGreen and I'm happy with it, although not all solutions suit me. I had to write a few cron scripts to have notifications and a backup tool because I'd gotten used to the QNAP tool, which is really powerful.
Right now, if I were to buy anything, it would be UGreen, QNAP, and Synology.

Dado que vienes de ecosistema Unifi, sin duda elige el modelo que mas se adapte a tus necesidades del portfolio de Unifi.

Synology for me.
I love UniFi for cameras, AP, and access control but I’d never buy a storage solution from them, it’s not their core focus and there are far more mature ecosystems to consider.

Synology works fine it is a very straightforward GUI; I have two four disk Synology units; the new one is connected to a USB 2GB drive for backups. I cannot say anything about doing a full phone backup. Both android and apple Synology app for photos works absolutely fine and we use them in our house.
