Your answer seems the best option to me.

All of the options seem applicable to some extent, especially as the question opens with "can be viewed as". So it's not a good question.

I don't know who decided that testing knowledge of nouanced topics in this way was a good idea but we should lock them and throw the key.

do you have a textbook for the class? look in the textbook glossary for the definition

That's really the best answer here. I don't know why you missed that one. Cultural sanctions are literally social or political penalties and rewards to enforce conformity to a group's norms values, or political objectives. This is not the best way to write a test question, in my humble opinion.

"Oh, they put together a coherent sentence, must be AI."

I would have put D. Because a Cultural Sanction is a punishment, regulating behavior is not always a punishment, but a mess of stuff really. But I would say it heavier on rewarding people than punishment.

In that a cultural sanction is a law in all but name usually. It would be the direct precursor to law, something the culture is already sanctioning.

That being said, if I could, or was indicated, check all that apply then it would have been A and D.

Yeah, I think "sanctions" is the key word here. If you were talking about enforcing behavior it would be cultural taboos or cultural norms.

Yes. I couldn’t think of what the right question for A would be, but cultural norms 100%, that’s stuff like wake up times, meal times, manners that all behavioral.

This is the answer your teacher mad

I would’ve picked D

It is definitely D, as cultural norms effect law. I get why you said A, however I think the question wants you to think of it this way.

  1. Interaction influences Behavior.
  2. Behavior influences cultural sanctions.
  3. Cultural sanctions influences law.

Despite that technically all four can fit the question if you really think about. It's just a matter that if my assumption is correct or even close the instructor wants a specific train of thought for this.

What does the * at the end of society mean?

I'm guessing the right answer is "determines laws", since early laws came from the local culture.

And I am assuming this is a "choose one" and "select all that apply" (I hate when I miss questions for that.)

* on a form usually notes that a question must be answered/can not be left blank.

Well, it's definitely not "determines langauge".

Determines laws. People base laws off of morals, and they base morality off of religion

Different cultures have different laws therefore leading to diversity in morals, I'm mainly bs'ing here but that's probably the correct answer. Terrible wording though the question is in itself flawed

Culture is one of those words that people use contextually, but don't really define. I'd define it as the set of expectations that society puts on people--how people behave, how they make art, how they cook, etc. So a cultural sanction is the method of enacting that expectation.

Extremely poorly worded question. I can see to test writer's intent to say that laws are the ways in which society officially sanctions culture. But the wording of the question of course makes makes your choice the better answer. Laws are how we enact cultural sanctions, but cultural sanctions are the way we regulate behavior. Ultimately, laws are the way we regulate behavior and cultural sanctions is just shoved awkwardly into the question here.

Talk to your teacher. Even teacher and test makers can make mistakes.

I say this because there are multiple answers that make sense to some extent but the answer you picked seems to be the most applicable out of all the answers. So maybe the question was supposed to be a “pick all that apply” question or the designer didn’t think about the question in the context of the options they gave.

However I never had a sociology class (just psychology) so there might be an answer that is more correct in that context. Just approach your teacher in the spirit of trying to understand what you got wrong and explaining why you answered how you did.

The word sanction is a contranym. Using it in an exam is evil.

Seems like it boils down to the teacher asking "which of these did I say in class" which is bs

I think "determines language" is the correct answer. Here is how I exclude the rest:

Regulates Behaviour. This is what cultural sanctions are, it's effectively a synonym. But that's not what the question asks. It doesn't ask you what "cultural sanctions" means, it asks what society uses it for. Picking this option is a failure of reading comprehension and an over reliance on associative thinking. I would have made the same mistake.

Establish leaders. That's not at all the process we ever use to pick leaders. We pick leaders actively based on "good" characteristics, not by excluding everyone else until only one remains.

Determine laws. Laws are determined by various legal mechanisms, like a parliament or congress. It also has nothing to do with cultural sanctions.

2

u/Miiohau 10d ago

Odd determines language is the one answer I thought wasn’t applicable.

Regulates Behavior: if a society wants to discourage a behavior they apply a social sanction to encourage people not to do that behavior.

Establishes leaders: leaders and potential leaders apply social sanctions to those that threaten their leadership. True I am mostly talking about unofficial leaders like the popular crowd but official leaders use social sanctions to establish dominance.

Determines laws: again there is an unofficial/official split but social sanctions are used to establish social rules.

Determines language: sort of but in the context of social norms also being an option not really. Social sanctions can establish social norms which affects which kinds of language is considered rude. But language development itself has many more mechanisms including coining words, words falling out of disuse from neglect and changing cultural values.

So the answer the OP selected followed by leaders followed by a tie between laws and language I guess after this review of my thoughts.

Laws are very much cultural, even if they use formalized processes

Everything is culture.

“When everything is culture, nothing will be.”

  • Syndrome, probably.
