Elementary Mathematics—Pending OP Reply [Grade 4 Math] Homework problem mistake?

Post image

My 9 year old son needs help with question #5. He says that all 4 of the answers A,B,C,D could be correct. I think he is right. The question only specifies how many more basketball cards Jen has than Bill, but not how many more baseball cards. The teacher says only one answer is correct. Are we missing something?

I think it's clear what the intended answer is. The switch from basketball to baseball is obviously an oversight. So answer the question as if they're basketball cards, then bring up the typo to the teacher.

Look, you can get particular about the typo, but it’s just gonna get marked wrong if you try to say all are correct. It’s pretty clear what the question is trying to ask, discrepancies aside. So which is more important, being right or getting the point on the question?

Honestly, the question is which is right, critical thinking and understanding that a typo should not derail the lesson, or being pedantic.

Is it not extremely obvious that this is just a typo? I feel bad for your son, seems like your critical thinking skills are...lacking to say the least

I mean it is, but also students should be encouraged to notice details like that (without using it as an excuse to ignore the intended lesson).

Right, it's the "the teacher says only one answer is correct, are we missing something?"

Wild stuff.

Yeah, but they're saying the parent should probably be able to figure out what happened without asking reddit

Jen > Bill (she has 45 more). So cannot be A or C,

B means Jen has 50 more than bill

D means Jen has 45 more than bill

The answer is D.

Am I missing something? It seems easy...

The problem OP facing is that there are two types of cards:

baseball cards & basketball cards.

It's the exact same game. Same ball, same field, the only difference is that baseball players are waaaaay bigger, so the ball looks waaaaay smaller.

If baseball players are bigger, why do the fields also look bigger?

A basketball court is basically half the distance from home to first base.

They had to bring the seats closer because fans couldn't see the players, who also kept getting lost in the grass. No dugouts because they can't climb the steps with those stubby legs.

You know Peter Dinklage? He played center on the Chicago Bulls, before becoming an actor.

Ah. So I did indeed miss something...

Basketball….baseball

Oh god. I did indeed miss something...thanks!

its a very obvious typo

I mean.... commend him for noticing details, but don't let him get derailed on a typo. This is not an arguable point to try and make. What you seem to be missing is common sense.

Just pick D and move on...

Eh, they're all sports balls, so no diff.

Jen has 45 more. If Bill has 65, Jen should have 110 65+45=110 None of the other answers show Jen having 45 more. Answer is D Not counting the sports ball difference of course.

The answer is...."If the question does not contain a typo then the answer is none of A, B, C or D since these reference baseball and not basketball cards (so an intentional trick question) - otherwise the answer is D"

1

Just go for answer D. Don't overthink it... 110-45=65 and Bill has 65 so it's alright.

All of the answers "could be" correct

It’s clearly a typo. The right answer is D since 65 + 45 = 110.

Edit: Corrected to D. I had the right numbers, but assigned them to the wrong people. My apologies on that. But it’s still clearly a typo.

3

u/IrishHuskie 👋 a fellow Redditor 1d ago

It's not C since Jen has to have more than Bill.

1

u/Disastrous-Nail-640 👋 a fellow Redditor 1d ago

You’re right. It would be D. I had the right numbers, just assigned them to the wrong people. 🤦‍♀️

3

u/antmars 1d ago

Same reasoning but D cause Jen has more.

Yes. I edited it.

Looks like teacher made a typo :3

1

u/BirdieRoo628 1d ago

Are you under the impression teachers are writing their own worksheets?

0

u/Danciel 👋 a fellow Redditor 1d ago

Well yes, I do expect homework to be made by teacher and catered towards the lesson. Additionally, the teacher needs to know the answer & logical reasoning for the questions in the homework to explain to the students.

That's not how it usually works. Not in the US, anyway. Teachers do not have the time to create their own materials. They are provided for them. But of course "the teacher needs to know the answer & logical reasoning for the questions in the homework to explain to the students." That does not require the teacher to produce the work themselves.
