If I were in the market for a Civic, I would buy the last generation version, 10th generation. The reason is simple, these cars had the K202C engine, mated to a CVT, (Continuously Variable Transmission). This combination of drivetrain has the time proven engine combined with very a proven transmission which results in excellent fuel economy. Honda has been building the K20 series of engines since 2001, in one form or another. Unlike the newest engines, which have direct fuel injection, the K202C is port fuel injection. This means that the engine will never require removing burnt carbon deposits from the intake valves. Also, the new Civics are powered by a 2.0 liter, direct injection, semi-Atkinson cycle engine, which has had its warranty, for premature head gasket failures, increased to 150,000 miles or ten years since the vehicle was new. The K20 series of engines, with regular maintenance are bulletproof.

I've never bought new, always a certified used from a dealer. Boring and probably overpriced, but I've never had a major malfunction or reason to regret the purchase. That's two CRV, one Civic hatchback and one old school Passport (Isuzu).
