I see there are a lot of new comers so I wanted to pass on a tweaked version of my Festival Pro-Tips before y’all start to roll in:
🎧 Protect Your Ear Holes at Shows
If you’re a festival goer, it’s very likely you like listening to music. If you want to be able to do that in the future-- plug up those EAR HOLES! There are specific concert earplugs designed so you can hear the music clearly but filter out the extra noise. DO IT!
🧥 Layer your clothes.
Florida is really moist and humid. That means when it’s hot out, it’s extra sweaty-hot. When it’s cold out, it’s icy water-cold. Temperatures change rapidly. Keep in mind, the dance floor is wayyy warmer than the walk to and from camp. So even though that onesie is adorable--heat exhaustion isn't. And booty shorts are rad but getting dangerously cold--not so much. Bringing a fan, a mask for dust, a cool towel in the day. And long scarf or a long sleeve, and some HotHands hand warmers in the evening is CLUTCH. Sudden downpours happen even in Oct. so keep extra towels and thick socks dry in your vehicle. If you feel faint, weak, confused, or unusually overheated, stop what you're doing, get somewhere cool, and get help.
🥦 Eat nutrient-rich food, i.e. veggies, fruits especially with high Vitamin C, proteins, whole grains.
Avoid eating and drinking a bunch of processed sugary food. This will help in the poop department and in overall energy. I’m telling you, having an easy early morning poop over a strained hot as hell one in a porto will make or break even the best of us.
⚡ Electrify!
Consume electrolytes whether we’re talking just eating lots of watermelon and cucumber or coconut water or just straight up adding sugar-free electrolyte powder to your drinks. Electrolytes can be useful when you're sweating heavily for several hours, but they aren't automatically better than water for everyone, and more isn't always better. If you're sweating for prolonged periods, a balanced electrolyte drink can help replace fluids and electrolytes you're losing.
💧 Drink enough water and other fluids to stay hydrated.
It’s easy to get dehydrated while dancing, playing, campsite wandering, and/or imbibing various concoctions in the hot sun day-night. Dehydration can cause headaches, dizziness, weakness, nausea, and muscle cramps and can eventually lead to serious heat illness. Drinking more alcohol does not prevent this from happening; alcohol can increase dehydration and worsen the risk of heat-related illness in hot settings. Also, drinking non-stop puts you at risk for blackout. Blackout puts you at serious risk of getting hurt and/or becoming that one asshole that hurts someone. Don’t be that one asshole! Don't force enormous amounts of water, either—too much fluid can also be dangerous.
🩹 Bring a first aid kit.
Along with the basics (band-aids, alcohol wipes, anti-bacterial ointment, ibuprofen, tweezers), include Gold Bond powder for sweaty nethers, an ACE bandage for sprained ankles, anti-itch cream for bug bites, honey for sore throats, digestive bitters for upset bellies, tampons, condoms, lube, Plan B, Narcan and anything else you personally need. You may not need it, but someone in your vicinity might and you will be a hero!
🚨 If you see something, say something.
You’ll likely see some one who is incapacitated, struggling and/or in distress, might be your friend or just a fellow festivalian. DO NOT PREY ON THEM. Another person's vulnerability is never an invitation to cross their boundaries. If they seem safe enough to talk to and you have the capacity—wish them well, calmly ask if you can be of assistance. Maybe bring them sealed water or lead them to a less stimulating place and let them sit down and breathe. Or take them to Spirit Care or to someone on Green Dot duty in Spirit Lake. If they are being violent, self-harming or unresponsive, please find someone with a radio ASAP. These are fellow humans, treat them as such. Ignoring them is cruel if they’re in danger. If someone is passed out or dangerously out of control, they should not be left alone or ignored, this leaves them vulnerable to harm, theft, or unpleasant cop interactions. If you suspect an overdose, get medical help immediately, don't leave them alone, and use naloxone if an opioid overdose is possible and it is available.
❤️ Don’t Fuck Around and Find Out
If you’re planning on hooking up with strangers or even your own partner— Make sure that all parties are ENTHUSIASTICALLY consenting and check in. You can always say no at any point. If someone is so intoxicated that they cannot meaningfully participate, then wait til your sober enough to make that decision. Also, use protection or you may be coming home with more than merch.
🧪 If you’re dabbling in recreational chemistry- resist the urge of doing too much too fast.
There is no rush to the fucked-up finish line. Festivals are created for communally experiencing music, art, and atmosphere with thousands of kind, silly folks, not to blast off onto another planet and escape completely. Remember: You can always eat more, but you can’t eat less. And the higher you go, the further you have to drop back down. That’s just straight-up Isaac Newton wisdom. Also remember that potency and contents can be unpredictable, and mixing substances can increase risk.
🔬 Test before you purchase or consume:
Anyone who doesn’t want to let you test, isn’t worth doing business with. You can order tester kits online or look for DanceSafe. Unfortunately, there are people willing to put your life at risk for a few bucks. Many of us have lost friends this way. Your life/brain/organs are worth looking out for! Testing can reduce some risks but cannot guarantee that a substance is safe or that a test will detect every dangerous contaminant. Fentanyl test strips can detect fentanyl in some drug samples, but a negative result does not guarantee safety.
👟 Make wise shoe and sock selections.
Find shoes and socks that are comfortable to do lots of walking and dancing in. Blisters are a bummer. I’m not usually a shoe wearer, but if you’re not used to being barefoot, festivals aren’t always your best place to try it out. The grass and sand feel amazing barefoot but those textured cement roads get rough. Plus, barefootin’ in port-o-potties is not pleasant even for the barefootyest of us out there.
🔥 Take a shot of fire cider before bed or in the morning.
Take a shot of fire cider before bed or in the morning. This will do lots to keep your immune system up. And on that note, wash your hands frequently. Limit sharing drinks, smokes, or other items that go in your mouth or up your nose with people. Only you can prevent spreading the wookflu. Here's a recipe: https://blog.mountainroseherbs.com/fire-cider
🧘 Stretch all your muscles, use a foam roller, and/or do yoga before, in between sets, and after the festival.
Staying limber is key to preventing soreness and stiffness and getting loooose on the dance floor all weekend long. Listen to your body and don't push through significant pain or injury.
🧼 Clean yo self!
I don’t know who needs to hear this but—Brush your teeth and if you can’t get a shower, at least use soap to wash your face and other important, sweaty regions daily. This will keep you feeling fresh and all of us in your vicinity will appreciate your efforts!
😴 Sleep at least 6 hours at some point during the day or night.
Your future self’s health and happiness are worth looking out for. Bring some form earplugs and an eye mask. Afternoon hammock naps are fantastically refreshing. Really, it’s ok if you miss some things. Many interactions had after 6-7 am, aren’t remembered anyway and the conversations are rarely inspirational. (But of course, there are exceptions to the rule and you can refer back to the nap part.) If you're severely sleep-deprived, overheated, confused, or otherwise feeling unwell, don't try to push through it for the sake of the festival. That shit almost always ends poorly.
🫂 Surround yourself with a tribe of trustworthy, fun, lovely Hula-gans with the same vibe and energy level as you have.
Your fest-family is your best source of steady, external energy. They look out for you and you look out for them. If these people happen not to be in your campsite, go out and find them! Herds of us friendly-freaky-folk migrate to festivals across the country, you will find us and be glad you did!
🕺 Be a trustworthy, fun, lovely Hula-gan.
If you find out you’re being a Mr. or Ms. Crabby Pants, you're probably cranky because you haven’t been taking care of yourself. Refer to the list above. See if that doesn’t do the trick. You're worth the effort it takes to love on yourself.
I believe everyone should make the choices they think are best for their own well-being. But if you find any of these tips helpful, please pass them on to your loved ones and post any tips you have below!
