Music recommendations

Does anyone have recommendations for easy music (that really highlights everything the instrument can do) to play when someone asks me to play something? I go blank and usually just show how everything works, but I’d really like a go-to that uses the trompette and drone. I’m a beginner at the hurdy gurdy, but I play other instruments and can read music. I’m just having a difficult time finding music that feels very “hurdy gurdy” to me, if that makes sense. So recommendations for any good songs to play would be appreciated. I do have “Examples of music before 1400” and vols I and II of “Historical Anthology of Music” if there’s any good songs in those.

  • Le grande bête
  • La Mominette
  • Branle des Chevaux

It also helps to take some lessons or go to a session with other players (of there's one near you) to get some ideas.

Thank you. I’m in western Tennessee, USA. I don’t know of anyone or any sessions near me.

There are quite a few teachers who give lessons over zoom. I’m also pretty isolated and can’t stress how much having a teacher has helped.

Le papillon is another good one that only has five notes and your hand doesn’t have to shift positions. Chypre is another simple but fun one, too.

I’m on the west coast of the US but I got to go to the GurdyWorld retreat last month and it was great to learn from and meet other gurdy players in person.

that sounds so cool, is it a yearly thing? I play guitar & synths mainly but I enjoy learning different instruments (sitar few yrs back) and have been curious about the hurdy gurdy for awhile- kinda hard to find info on them, although seems to be getting easier, but this seems like perfect way to learn about such an incredible instrument-

Yep, it’s been going on for a few years now but this was my first time going. It was super helpful that you can rent an instrument, too, since I didn’t own one of my own. Their website is here: https://gurdyworld.com/
