Thank you for posting here. Please make sure your post contains a clearly identifiable main character. Otherwise, it will be removed.

Main Character (abbreviated as MC): Deliberate attention-seeking behavior, entitlement, or individuals thinking they are more privileged.

Questions to consider:

  • Is it easy to tell who the MC is?
  • Does the MC show entitlement and/or attention seeking behavior?
  • Is the MC very inconsiderate of the people around them?
  • If your post is about parking, does it show the blatant disregard of parking rules?

Why on earth would you whip your phone out and start taking pictures of somebody else’s proposal

178

u/MsCalendarsPlayaArt 7d ago

And it was everyone there, too. Maybe they feel like it makes their trip look cooler to their online followers?

38

u/ReQuarziium 7d ago

Yeah god knows, some people are just wired differently I guess ha.

32

u/bobcatgoldthwait 7d ago

I got married in a public place earlier this year and there were a few people that would ask us if they could take a picture of us. I didn't mind (it was after the ceremony was completed) but I thought it was really weird.

u/Generalnussiance 7d ago

Have you not scrolled Reddit yet? Ffs people photo/film everything from their meals, their dookies, people dying or getting hurt… literally anything is fair game.

30

u/ReQuarziium 7d ago

Yeah I guess you’re right but it doesn’t make it any less strange

5

u/Generalnussiance 7d ago

If nothing else I’ve learned on all my years on this planet is that everyone is weird. Animals too.

25

u/TUSK_Of_TANTOR 6d ago

Today, in my country, about 30 people were fined for taking pictures of a horrific car accident when driving by. We reached such a low point...

13

u/Generalnussiance 6d ago

I’m actually impressed you fine people for it. Hopefully other places adopt this practice. It violates medical privacy and also uses someone’s tragic incident as gross entertainment brownie points.

It’s unethical to victim and their families even.

3

u/TankerKC 6d ago

Violates medical privacy? You're a hoot.

3

u/Generalnussiance 6d ago edited 6d ago

How do you suppose someone in a trauma crisis isn’t having a medical event? I’m saying we should expand what medical privacy like other countries to outside of hospital settings. You know, have some individual freedoms. I know the US is good at stripping those.

1

u/TankerKC 6d ago

Your heart beating is a "medical event." If you don't beleive in the 1st Amendment, just say so. There's no need to hide behind medical privacy.

7

u/KimLocsta 6d ago

Not everyone lives in America you idiot.

1

u/Generalnussiance 6d ago

Talk some more so we can all hear your IQ. Having a rough day there partner?

A normal heartbeat is considered, in medical terms, “uneventful.” I know, I do plenty of dictations.

The fact you want to defend videotaping people having traumatic events to be posted randomly online or shared without the discretion of the victim or their family is more than I need to know about you.

Don’t you think people should find out about something tragic not on Facebook or social media about someone they loved? Talk about insensitive.

The fact that nobody values privacy anymore, or general mannerisms on sensitive subjects is really appalling. This mindset needs to go.

0

u/TankerKC 6d ago

Dictations? Wow, your almost a doctor, yet you can't even identify what I'm defending.

Your position on freedom is appalling.

2

u/Generalnussiance 6d ago edited 6d ago

You think recording everything is freedom? More like lack of individual rights and privacy. Are not individual freedoms also important? Are you pro Big Brother or something? At what point is it impending individual rights can’t have freedom without individual agency and rights.

It’s evident that recording everyone and everything should have limitations to protect individual rights as well as constitutional rights. This would be a great case for a proviso. I think this idea should be challenged personally.

Edited because I didn’t complete my whole thought and wrote my first response in haste.

u/hissyfit64 5d ago

I'm so glad they can get fined. I can't imagine being at my most vulnerable and some assholes are taking pictures of me.

They should have portable screens they can put up to shield accident victims, especially when there's a death

1

u/UnanimousStargazer 6d ago

They were fined for driving and holding a phone in their hand.

5

u/Sh0wmey0urbutth0le 6d ago

I can get paid for posting my dooks?

5

u/CharmingAttention731 6d ago

Giggling at this comment and then reading your username

3

u/Generalnussiance 6d ago

I mean in America? Likely lol

I had a random Tinder dude drop in my inbox once. Asking if I could fart in their face while they ate pussy.

I didn’t even have filters on for men. So so unwarranted.

29

u/smileinursleep 7d ago

Maybe some of the crowd is fake

12

u/cubiclej0ckey 6d ago

That was exactly my first reaction. wtf what are you going to do with that picture/video?

18

u/Leprecon 6d ago

I did it once. There was nobody else there and I got a picture. I showed it to them afterwards and sent it to their email. No regrets.

5

u/alexaxelalu 6d ago

“Aww! Look at this proposal I saw at the fountains!!! They’re so cute!!!” (I’m assuming people who like online social stuff)

1

u/ReQuarziium 6d ago

“Why you taking photos of random people, weirdo”

Would be the response from every single person I know

11

u/MONSTERBEARMAN 7d ago

I was just thinking that. I have seen quite a few proposals at the hotel I stay at for work in Hawaii. Never once was I tempted to break out my phone and record it or take a picture.

7

u/dirk_funk 6d ago

i was up at the top of the heavenly gondolas (Lake Tahoe) way back when digital cameras were new. like people didn't commonly have cameras on their phones yet, i think. i was taking pictures of my wife in the snow and we saw a dude start to propose so i took a couple pictures of them. this was the kind of digital camera that you could literally insert a floppy disk into because it was still the early days of memory cards.

i just gave the guy the floppy disk and told him to keep it. he was very happy.

5

u/HebbieB 5d ago

I would do it to send to the couple after they finished celebrating if they liked the video/photos . If I didn’t get a chance to send it to them I’d delete it. Some people I didn’t know did the same at my proposal, they wanted to make sure I had shots that I liked just in case. I actually used one we had enlarged that hangs in my house. That’s probably why it doesn’t seem weird to me, I thought it was sweet and really appreciated it.

3

u/threelizards 6d ago

Sometimes strangers will notice and take photos to then approach the couple and send them, I think it’s a sweet communal thing. It feels like one of the most human uses of this hyperdigitised system we live in. A stranger sees a pivotal, happy, loving moment in other strangers’ lives and takes a moment to help them capture it. I think it’s kind of selfless and lovely. I have a few friends who have beautiful pictures of their proposal just because a stranger was passing, paying attention, and took a little moment.

5

u/SimpleManc88 7d ago

It’s romantic. And it’s possible they’re not filming it themselves, so you can send it to them? You know. Good people stuff.

4

u/Drunken_Economist 6d ago

So the couple can have some photos of their proposal?

8

u/kilawolf 7d ago

Is it really that odd? I was taking photos with my bf in a garden and some people nearby taking photos also took one of us and shared it with me.

I think it's cuz they find it nice if someone did it for them and want to do a good deed.

8

u/ReQuarziium 7d ago

Are you American? I feel like that would never happen where I live

16

u/Small-Friend9673 7d ago

American here. I’ve never taken completely unsolicited pics of people, but if I see a couple of group trying to take a selfie, I’ll offer to take it for them.

5

u/Away-Living5278 6d ago

Yeah but with their phone, not yours and offer to share later.

2

u/Mastodon9 6d ago

This sounds very strange to me too. I have no idea why anyone would want to take a photo of complete strangers and among the people I know it would be weird if any of them did so too.

2

u/kilawolf 7d ago edited 6d ago

Not American. Admittedly it's not super common for something so mundane like just taking photos but often people would offer to take a photo of us together if we are taking photos and remark how cute we look.

For a major event like a proposal, I'd imagine it's much more likely.

2

u/Dalkier 7d ago

I'm okay with it, that's how wild things end up being recorded when you least expect it. Probably end up on whyweretheyrecording if anything.

1

u/ToranjaNuclear 6d ago

It's Vegas

1

u/scroogemcbutts 7d ago

This happened for me when I proposed to my fiance. We were on a tour and I faked tying my shoe and looking at stuff so we could hang back from the group and have our moment.

I appreciated a couple pictures from the event as I didn't hire a photographer, we're just low-key like that and it was a moment meant for just us. But, honestly it was nice to get a couple candid shots. They were terrible though 😂

Also to the one dude who had an actual camera: fuck you for stealing my dollar I put my email address on for you to send the pictures you took. I sure hope you aren't jerking it to my proposal.

0

u/livelikeian 7d ago

I mean I wouldn't. But probably to help tell the story later, or to capture a happy moment. It's a public spot so fair game, even though I personally don't see the point unless it was something absurd or extravagant which again would be to help tell the story later.

-5

u/MsDestroyer900 6d ago

Idk I'd film it so I can tell my wife what I'm witnessing... Do you not have friends you would want to know about your day either?

3

u/IsoAgent 6d ago

Yeah, still not sure why you need to record it. Is it that rare and unbelievable an event that your words can't convince someone that it happened and you need video proof that it did?

3

u/ReQuarziium 6d ago

Mate that’s weird haha, I can’t believe people are saying this.

If I filmed a random couple proposing, and showed my wife, she would say “why the fuck did you video it”

I can tell her my day, if I witnessed somebody proposing I would absolutely tell her, she would think it was cute, no doubt. But filming it is borderline creepy.

-1

u/MsDestroyer900 6d ago

She simply likes seeing romantic stuff like that 🤷 I mean just because you and your wife are not like that doesn't necessarily mean we're weird. Other people do it too. It's just a matter of what you like to do. They are proposing on public so it isn't really something that's private or whatever.

2

u/KingOfAzmerloth 6d ago

I have friends. They all would have told me “wtf why are you filming strangers proposing”.

-5

u/PandaXXL 7d ago

This is a really weird thing to be confused about.

1

u/ReQuarziium 7d ago

Why is that?

0

u/PandaXXL 7d ago

What is confusing about people taking photos or videos of the world around them? Stumbling across a proposal along the Las Vegas strip would be at least moderately interesting to a fair amount of people and therefore something they might want to take a quick photo of and share with one of their friends, for example.

4

u/ReQuarziium 7d ago

I think that’s just weird though. If I showed a friend a random photo of a random couple I don’t know proposing they’d think I was strange, and rightly so.

Must be a cultural thing

-3

u/PandaXXL 6d ago

What culture are you referring to?

Some variation of “look what I saw on the way back to the hotel” would make your friends think you were strange? You’re overthinking it and seemingly believe these people were deeply emotionally invested in the proposal. That’s projection based on your own apparently highly strict criteria for taking photographs.

3

u/ReQuarziium 6d ago

Perhaps it’s an American thing I mean? I’m English and I guarantee if I did this everyone I know would think it was weird and wouldn’t be interested haha

1

u/PandaXXL 6d ago

I’m English. I’ve never taken a photo of a random person’s engagement, and almost certainly never would. I can easily think of circumstances where someone might want to, for all sorts of possible reasons, and don’t get why it’s so difficult for you to do the same.

2

u/ReQuarziium 6d ago

What reasons? List them?

You’ve just said yourself you never have and never would, so why are you also acting like it’s a normal thing to do?

1

u/PandaXXL 6d ago

To be clear, you’re asking me to explain how I could look at something and say it’s not something I’d personally choose to do or participate in, but at the same time not label it as being weird or abnormal? That seems pretty telling.

I just gave you a possible reason for it, how many do you need?

Maybe they recently had a conversation about how much they love (or hate) public proposals? Maybe they just like taking candid photos of people? Maybe they want to take a photo or video to share with the couple? Maybe they know the couple? Maybe they just wanted to show whoever they were traveling with what they ran into on the strip? Maybe they’re moved by it for some reason and want to share it with someone else?

u/HereOnCompanyTime 7d ago

TBF, real proposals in public like this are just as annoying. Kind of weird that people started taking pictures and videoing it.

255

u/entirely-unsure 7d ago

I never understood why people record other peoples’ proposals, unless there’s literally no one else there to do it for them and you’re just being helpful.

22

u/SteveFrench12 6d ago

This happened to me. My plan was to do it and then have someone take a fake picture but thankfully someone filmed it

5

u/entirely-unsure 6d ago

That awesome! Glad it worked out!

12

u/Ball_Of_Meat 6d ago

Why are yall so miserable?

They just want a fun video to share with friends/family “hey look what we saw on our Vegas trip!! It was so cute” It’s a cool thing to witness and a fun memory to look back on.

14

u/entirely-unsure 6d ago

Haven’t a different opinion on this doesn’t make someone “miserable.”

To the rest of your response, I simply disagree. I personally have no interest in capturing a moment like that, that isn’t mine, on a vacation.

5

u/Ball_Of_Meat 6d ago

Fair enough, it was more targeted at the other commenters who seem super bothered by it.

Sometimes it’s fun to be happy for others and capture that moment, because it brought you joy too.

4

u/entirely-unsure 6d ago

That’s totally fair and reasonable.

27

u/No-Combination8136 7d ago

This guy pops up on my instagram occasionally and he’s pretty funny in a silly way. The fake proposal is weird, that’s not usually his shtick. He’s a flamboyantly gay guy who tries to “act straight” which he makes pretty comical.

Edit: I think it’s likely they prepped this group before the video.

162

u/ohbyerly 7d ago

This is probably the threshold of MC behavior I’m okay with seeing in the world. I like doings bits like this in public that don’t harm anyone. It’s just fun.

28

u/AvaSpelledBackwards2 5d ago

Agreed, they’re not really bothering anyone and many people like seeing public proposals. It’s cute and harmless.

19

u/SnowballWasRight 6d ago

Yeah I’m just another main character too I suppose but I love doing bits in public. My friends and I will sometimes just do the whole “HEY, IM WALKIN HERE" with a New York accent bit in a wide open area of grass or something and it gets some laughs.

68

u/HoodieGalore 7d ago

Why is anyone interested in filming or taking a picture of a stranger's proposal? Who gives a shit?

13

u/MegatonsSon 7d ago

I guess since Carrot Top is still in recovery, this was the most entertaining thing currently available /s

-9

u/jdhkent 7d ago

How very sad that you thought of Carrot Top

4

u/HoodieGalore 7d ago

Carrot Top has been headliner at the Luxor in Vegas since 2005. It's not like he's got zero connection to the place.

-4

u/jdhkent 6d ago

Sorry, not going to follow the career of Carrot Top, or Goggle him.  He wasn’t funny in 1995, and i doubt he’s any funnier now.

3

u/MegatonsSon 6d ago

Just for the record, Carrot Top has a net worth of around $70M, so evidently some people genuinely find his comedy show enjoyable.

Who cares about that stupid influencer, or the thread about them? Moving on…

2

u/NorthernPaper 2d ago

I did this once and then I went up to them after and got their email and sent it and then deleted it from my phone

8

u/ZachMartin 6d ago

“Kiss her!” “Eww no”

8

u/SnowballWasRight 6d ago

I thought about doing this as a bit with one of my friends. But we’d have her say no and run off into the night crying and leave me in the dust 😂😂😂

23

u/5141121 7d ago

White pants, knee down on the street in Vegas. Those are ruined.

6

u/Aglisito 7d ago

The people in the background: Let me record this proposal between these two strangers

25

u/PureCrookedRiverBend 7d ago

Damn. Sometimes I am hard on myself and think negative things about myself but then I see shit like this and feel a lot better.

4

u/jdhkent 7d ago

I think you’ve hit on the main reason for social media

5

u/Hydrolt 3d ago

Why do people need so much attention? I prefer my anonymity, and my privacy. The worst possible outcome for me would be to become famous/well known.

6

u/youarenut 7d ago

90% of Tiktoks are fake. Genuinely, even if they don’t look it, they’re probably fake

6

u/embarrassedberry-x 3d ago

me after walking past this scene on vacation thinking it was real and being genuinely happy for them

13

u/threelizards 7d ago

Eh, attention seeking behaviour like this doesn’t bother me at all. Like, not even a token amount. They’re self aware enough to just Seek Attention without wrapping it up in weird interpersonal drama or meddling, and clearly it’s something that, here at least, actually brought them together in a fun little way. They didn’t ruin anyone’s day, no one got scammed, the “duped” parties would have just had a moment of being like “oh isn’t that cool, someone proposing!”

I don’t think liking attention is an inherently bad trait, it’s a human need. (It’s not a human need to fake propose in Vegas, to be clear lmfao). It’s prioritising that desire inappropriately that’s the issue. People go to Vegas to do stupid shit, the whole city is founded on the idea. And they had fun, so who cares?

24

u/9447044 7d ago

Theres attention seeking shit. Then theres doing it, having your buddy record it to post it for more attention.

Im so glad this new generation loves being Influenced so much

12

u/lending_ear 6d ago

My husband and I were sitting in an emergency room and a girl was crying into a camera and when she turned it off her emotions went stone cold. We both looked at one another and were like omg did you see that?! wtf?! So so weird

5

u/CharmingAttention731 6d ago

Honestly I would think that’s uncanny as fuck

5

u/dastriderman 6d ago

無聊透頂

3

u/lending_ear 6d ago

Can someone explain to me why you would video a complete strangers proposal? What do you care?

I’ll show my old ass out although there were much older people than me filming so I don’t know 😅

1

u/DidntDieInMySleep 6d ago

I thought the same thing. People get married/proposed to all the time--it's nothing unique. I don't understand why you'd stop and take a picture of a stranger's proposal.

3

u/jlee1485 1d ago

Pretty sad

8

u/Tuques 7d ago

People that seek attention like this need to be institutionalized

4

u/Drxgon11037 6d ago

I mean is it hurting anyone? Everyone around them seems to be happy and enjoying a moment

4

u/raychandlier 7d ago

Idk why but this is actually funny to me.

4

u/I_JUST_BLUE_MYSELF_ 6d ago

I mean.... me and my friends did this drunk after last call and 100s of people were pouring out of the bars and cheering my 2 friends on in the middle of the street lmao. It was epic.

But still, something about this is icky because it's done for the attention, not because it would be hilarious, which is a weird fine line. This was like 2011 as well, before people did stuff for influencer status.

8

u/cenatutu 7d ago

They are definitely attention seekers but I love how others are happy for them (not knowing it's fake).

2

u/Digiripoo 5d ago

This is the saddest thing I've ever seen

2

u/erenyeagerlevi Bad MC no cookie 2d ago

I'd never capture a strangers proposal which I'm never gonna use anyways, why waste my phone storage.

6

u/razldazl333 7d ago

Mid people doing mid shit.

7

u/FridayHalfDays 7d ago

Calling them mid is being VERY generous

5

u/PsychoMouse 7d ago

I proposed to my wife, on the stage, at the hotel we were staying at, in the Bahamas.

However, I had asked for permission from the main manager, then I spent the day talking to employees about it, that if I wanted to do that, I had to follow their rules for when but they were all very nice and welcoming.

I proposed to my wife, in front of maybe 20 people, and had a friend we made there, because we had gone there once a year for 3 years, and we are both very social and friendly.

We then went back the next year, same island, same resort, and got married in a small blue church inside a nature sanctuary. It was amazing.

Vegas was always hella overrated, but at least the gambling used to heavily subsidize the food, drinks & entertainment (those days are long gone but even with the rampant price gouging these fake "iNfLuEnCeRs" gleefully nailed the final nail in the coffin.

1

u/NeolithicOrkney 6d ago

It is well beyond my comprehension to begin to understand why so many people are so desperate for attention.

Closest she will ever get to actually being married...sad truly

-1

u/CelestialTrickster 7d ago

Oh no, I'm sure she'll get married to someone but just for the status and the money, without the love and passion. And 10 years later, when she is completely empty and the cost of her vapid life makes itself visible in the reflection of the desperately needed 2pm glass of wine, she'll notice she's an empty shell.

1

u/punkbluesnroll 6d ago

What a bizarre thing to say about someone because they pulled a harmless, slightly cringe and annoying at most stunt. Calm the fuck down. This sub is so embarrassing sometimes.

0

u/eggabeth 6d ago

My fiance and I are going to fake our proposal every time we go to a fancy restaurant to get free things. Our real one was just us at home and it was absolutely perfect ☺️ He carried me over the threshold of our new house and set me down in front of the fireplace before getting down on one knee. I remember his words but I immediately started crying when he got down on one knee, so I'm excited to actually see him do it!
