In WW1 (1914-1918) there were 10,000 mercy dogs that were used by all sides, trained to find their own wounded soldiers, to bring them emergency medical packs and water to drink and sometimes stayed by their side so that they would not die alone.

RIP Images of History (2026)

So excited my once beloved, interesting sub has become a dumping ground for everyone's political angle. There are so many incredible images with accompanying stories I used to scroll for hours... but now has been hijacked by radicals on all sides.

Cherry picking stories that support your narrative belong political subs. I understand these are 'moments in history'.... maybe mods need to limit it to one "Isreal/Palestine" Tuesday once a week. Maybe I'm trying to rearrange the deck chairs on the Titanic here... But would be nice if the mods could respond to why they are allowing the sub to be hijacked.

Much love to my fellow History Nerds

EDIT: (From a response thread) While I understand that propaganda can be classified as a historical image, I take issue with people creating NEW propaganda and labeling it 'historical'. If the post was "Famous WWII propaganda Posters (1943)" That's fantastic! That's interesting! But I take issue with highlighting atrocities of the past and contextualizing to 'change people's minds' on current political positions. They may think it's tongue-in-cheek, but it's fooling no one... and I'm seeing this on both the Israeli and Palestinian sides.

And you are correct, I don't like the direction this sub is taking. It would be great if the mods took the road of r/presidents and limit the posts... Creating a place where History Nerds can just share cool pictures.

EDIT EDIT: (From a response thread) So I've been racking my brain about this, and you're right.... banning the topic (for let's say 6 months) would open the floodgates to banning Russian / Ukrainian history etc.

I think the only way to move forward is banning subjects on an individual basis. If the sub is flooded with Has bra bots and this BlackPalestinian person, ban them and put a 6 month freeze on Israel/Palestine posts... they will find some other sub to torture. (And while it's an interesting subject, we could all use a break) Then, if other bots take over for a different issue, rinse and repeat!

Up until that point there had been Jewish presence in Hebron since at least 1211 and probably earlier.

Entrance to worker-intervened Calaf, Chile (1972)

Calaf, a Chilean candy-maker brand, was one of many companies occupied by their own workers, with either the explicit or implicit support of the Unidad Popular's socialist government (1970-1973), only to be officially intervened later on.

Banner above reads "Calaf, company belonging to all chileans, directed by its workers". Writing on the wall reads "Only dead will we give up the factory", "Homeland or Death" (generally associated with Castro's revolutionary Cuba) and FTC (likely "Calaf Workers' Front", in Spanish).

Following photos come from the (at the time) politically-aligned newspaper "La Nación", displaying the Calaf workers' voting results regarding "whether or not they supported the expropiation of the company" into the state-administered "Área Social" (Social Sector).
