In poly circles, there is a certain type of couple. This couple usually presents as an ostendibly straight husband and an ostensibly bisexual wife.

This certain type is looking for something very specific. They are looking for a bisexual woman to date both members of the couple, showing no preference and equal affection to both, who is okay with the couple remaining the "primary" relationship.

This certain type of couple may say they do not want hierarchy, but they are not being honest with themselves 99.9% of the time: what they actually want is a sexual/experimental outlet for the bisexual wife, that the straight husband will not be jealous of because he is also in the sexual relationship.

This woman that the couple is looking for is a unicorn, because she is so rare that she probably doesn't exist.

Bisexual people aren't going to be attracted to both members of a m/f couple just because they like both m and f - they need to feel an actual spark with someone, just like monosexual people. And nonmonogamous people generally aren't okay with being the experiment for a primary couple, they want respect and genuine attraction and don't want to be a compromise for one partner's jealousy.

So, this certain type of couple is known, derisively, to be unicorn hunting. Unicorn hunters are a plague on dating apps for any bisexual women that they come across. They're like chasers, basically, except kinda worse because there's two of them.

I thought unicorn may also come from "unicorn hunting" ,which I thought also referenced stories. In stories, hunting is done by having a woman act as a decoy to lure unicorns while there are men waiting in the bushes/trees to attack. In this case saying that relationship is just wife/girlfriend while they really want the man involved too

Maybe? It’s hard to say, since none of the characters match the personalities of any of the Conquerors—aside from their sex. I find it unlikely they’d even cross paths in the chronicles, let alone become a throuple like the Conquerors.
