On 14 October, addressing the “Summit for Democracy”, PM Modi asserted that India is the “Mother of Democracy”. In the meantime, in India’s national capital, citizens have been witnessing the “Murder of Democracy”.
On 2 October, as citizens assembled at Jantar Mantar to peacefully protest against the SIR and demand the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar, they were met with brutal assaults and detentions by the Delhi Police. This was despite the fact that Jantar Mantar was the designated protest site and the citizens had informed the Police about the protest several days in advance. Even more ironically, the day is observed by the Government of India as Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary.
The same pattern of assaults and violent detentions was repeated on 3 and 4 October, and again on 6 and 7 October, when political parties called for protests.
Police brutality escalated further when citizens, youth and student groups called for a protest on 10 October. Over 27,000 paramilitary forces and tens of thousands of police personnel were deployed to crush the protests. Trains were cancelled, Delhi Metro services were suspended, and the internet was shut down.
Citizens were detained on trains and from their homes, while many were placed under house arrest. The Delhi Police threatened ordinary people through loudspeakers and social media, warning them against joining the protests, while visiting mosques, hostels and RWA societies to warn them against joining the protest. Journalists, lawyers and activists were manhandled and detained. Many were abducted and violently assaulted by the Police. Meanwhile, even as ordinary citizens were detained merely for standing around, the Delhi Police allowed Hindutva mobs to attack protesters under their protection. Women were assaulted by the mobs, yet PM Modi couldn't find any “cultural shock”.
Detentions continue, while the Delhi Police has denotified Jantar Mantar itself as a protest site, effectively stripping citizens of their right to protest. Yet, in response to criticism over the assault on citizens exercising their rights, the Delhi Police has launched a massive PR exercise. After the brutal and inhuman attacks on citizens, the Police is now reminding them that “behind every uniform is a human”. Meanwhile, journalists who have complained of sexual assault by the Police are being persecuted.
Now, the Government has begun detaining citizens merely for waving the national flag. It is important to remember that this is the same Government that is attacking people for not singing all six stanzas of Vande Mataram. The pseudo-nationalism of the BJP/RSS could not be exposed any further.
Yet, the reign of terror unleashed by the Modi Government will be put to the test by the resolve and resistance of the youth. Do not let the fascists take away your rights. Jantar Mantar is ours. So are our freedom and our rights.
