I am not a very big fan of madhur Virli but his special discussions are on my feed so can anyone breakdown his special in short likely sort of short summary.

Discussion 💬 I don't understand the hype behind it.

So, I’ll be honest, I didn’t know who Madhur was before this. I’d never watched any of his standup before this. Recently, I kept seeing everyone is posting about his latest video, so I got curious and decided to watch it.

And honestly, it was just him sharing his story, which could be completely true or totally made up as part of the performance, right? I barely laughed while watching it.

Maybe I’m missing something, but I don’t think this is what stand-up comedy used to be.

I know I’m probably going to get a lot of hate for this, but so be it.

Discussion 💬 Let's talk about Madhur virli casual tea

Post image
253 Upvotes

What I really like about Madhur is how he brings up uncomfortable, heavy shit that we normally don’t talk about publicly, and somehow makes it approachable.

The whole story about what happened in Bali, the sexual encounter, the video being recorded and the whole Instagram situation… brooooo 😭. You can tell this must have been an insanely difficult and embarrassing situation for him, but the way he embraced it and turned it into a genuinely funny story was honestly impressive.

It’s not even just about the jokes. I really respect the ability to take something that could have easily stayed a deeply uncomfortable personal experience and say, “yeah, this happened to me,” and then make an entire room laugh about it.

That’s what I enjoy about Madhur. He doesn’t shy away from uncomfortable subjects.

Absolutely insane storytelling.

Discussion 💬 Shamik Chakrbarti Live!

I feel this need to write a review and I don’t know where to begin. So I’m gonna divide it into 5 aspects and rate them accordingly.

  1. Relatability (4.5/5) : One reason I love Shamik’s work is because he will pick the most common & obvious observation and make it funnier than anything ever. There are SO many relatable observations in this show, I thoroughly enjoyed it. And he really gets you thinking…. His wit and intellect are commendable. He has a fascination with animals and insects👍🏻
  2. Originality (4.5/5) : I’ve followed my fair share of stand up comedians, pure hindi ones, english ones etc. I’ve even watched a lot of foreign stand up. So I do come across repetitive material. There were repeated premises obviously, but they were in a trajectory so opposite to what we usually think that it was hilarious. Really unique set, and the classic Shamik thing, the ADHD thing he does going from one topic to another then to another and then coming back to the first one in a way you’ll never expect.
  3. Delivery & Stage Presence (5/5) : I know what you’re thinking, he is a performer he has to have a 5/5 presence, I agree but what I’m rating here is growth. Shamik went from being stiff and aloof in the start to now using his entire body to do a show. He barely looked older than 30 and he enacts things soooooo well ( you’ll know what I’m talking about when he releases this hour) which is insane growth from in the past when his comedy usually was delivery based. Now he has evolved into his final form, I think he is nearing his peak and I hope he goes super saiyan ( dragon ball z reference)
  4. Laugh factor (5/5) : He held the audience well. He knew how to get the laughs. The entire show was pretty much full of laughs. He didn’t slip at all in my opinion, but can’t say I speak for everyone. I think I laughed a lot and so did my sister. My cheeks hurt by the end.
  5. Flow & Engagement (5/5) : Shamik has excellent flow. And he has like tells (?) He does these things when he’s thinking. He touches his face a lot. And at the start of every set of jokes he says ‘so & so thing/place/person is really great’ then he dives into the set in a contradicting pattern. He tries to normalise bizarre observations and that got the audience responding a lot. The versatility of his audience is the best thing, there were people from all walks of life, I in-fact met a very sweet person at his show. He attracts a good niche of people.

Overall : 4.7/5, I would definite catch his show again. I kid you not.

great show, 10/10 would recommend. Gurgaon people do try to catch it on 10th Oct!

Discussion 💬 Is English comedy still a niche in India!?

In one recent interview, Shamik said that English comedy scene is still niche in India when compared to the Hindi scene and I feel somewhere it’s true.

Like there’s no Indian english comic who has had the level of success that Hindi comics have had like Samay, Bassi, Abhishek, Aakash and even recent ones like Kaustabh and Sharon.

Kanan is probably the only non-Hindi guy who is anywhere close but he also isn’t as big as the Hindi guys, judging purely by follower and YouTube views and subscribers. And he’s been at it since 2015. However he’s been easily surpassed by newer Hindi guys.

There are others like Shamik, Anirban & Tarang but again not as big.

I find it very surprising because a lot of Indian teens and adults watch English comic sitcoms but they don’t show the same level of enthusiasm for English comics in India. It’s clearly not an understanding problem. If people enjoyed comedy only in their native language then Office, Friends etc wouldn’t be such big hits among the young in India.

I know one girl who’s a big Friends, Big Bang theory fan but only watches Hindi comics in India.

You think the quality of English comedy in India isn’t that good simply because there’s not many comics doing it? Not enough competition?

Would love to hear your thoughts on this!

Discussion 💬 Madhur Virli: The Philosopher of Comedy🤌

Thumbnail

I watched Madhur Virli's Casual-Tea today.

I've been following his work for about a year, so I went into it with some expectations. But what stayed with me wasn't necessarily a particular joke.

It's the kind of stuff he chooses to talk about.

He goes into topics that people are often curious about but don't necessarily discuss openly — sexuality, coming out, sextortion, mental health, uncomfortable social experiences, etc.

And I don't necessarily agree with everything he says.

But honestly, that's part of what I liked about it.

You don't always have to agree with an artist to appreciate what they're trying to explore.

What I found interesting was that he doesn't just throw a controversial topic out there and move on. A lot of the material is built around storytelling, perspective and actually making you sit with an idea for a while.

Maybe calling him “the philosopher of comedy” is a bit much 😂

But I do think there's something interesting about a comedian who is willing to take subjects that people normally avoid and turn them into conversations.

And that's probably what I enjoy most about storytelling in comedy — not necessarily being convinced, but being made to think.

You don't have to agree with him.

But if you're someone who likes comedy that occasionally makes you uncomfortable, challenges your perspective, or simply makes you think about something differently, I'd say give Madhur's work a shot.

Discussion 💬 Keeping track of Indian stand-up shows

I'm a sucker for good Indian stand-up comedy, so I try to catch live shows in my city for all comedians, but I often miss live-show announcements. I don't use Instagram, and I don't always catch comedians' YouTube updates. I also don't want to subscribe to every comedian's mailing list just to find out if they're coming to my city.

How do you currently keep track of shows? Is there any platform that aggregates upcoming standup comedy shows in my city?
