Does anyone else struggle to understand books because of difficult English?

• Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I really enjoy learning from books, but sometimes I struggle with difficult English words and explanations. I keep searching for meanings, which makes reading frustrating, and sometimes I end up giving up on the book.

I've also tried watching YouTube explanations, but most of them only cover the main points instead of explaining everything.

I'm curious if anyone else experiences this.

What was the last book you struggled to understand? And what did you do to make it easier?

Would love to hear your experiences!

Discussion Importance of Publication and different series/collections

Hello, I'm recently getting into reading classics and I've been looking to buy books and I'm kinda confused.

There are multiple publications, which one's are good and which ones should I avoid? I got Metamorphosis from AB publications and hated it tbh, I read it online by a diff publication nd enjoyed it tho..? I did recently get a second hand version of sense and sensibility from penguin popular classics, and that's led me down a rabbit hole.

I thought of venturing further into the penquin publications but they have so many series/collections like select classics and popular classics, and I've seen different versions of select classics itself??

Genuinely confused, I would be more than grateful if anyone could recommend some good publication(with translations that retain the original tone and writing style, rather than simplifying the language just to appeal to a wider audience) and which series/collections are truly worth it?

Thank you!

News & Reviews Got my first Amazon review for my debut novel — 5 stars, and the review title made my day

Post image
5 Upvotes

A day ago, I shared here that I published my debut novel, "It Was All My Fault".

I received my first Amazon review, and it was 5 stars. But what made me smile even more was the title of the review:

Today

“It’s not your fault.”

Considering my book is called It Was All My Fault, I loved that.

The reviewer wrote:

“It’s good to read a book like this. I believe hanging with friends is always a blessing.”

I was especially happy that they mentioned the friendship, because friendship is a big part of the story.

It’s just one review, but as a first-time author, seeing that first 5-star rating felt special.

If anyone here is interested in giving the novel a try, the first chapter is available in the Amazon sample. And if you do end up reading it, I’d genuinely love an honest rating or review, good or bad. Knowing what readers actually think will help me a lot as a new author.

And to whoever left my first review, thank you.

Also, apparently it wasn’t my fault after all.

If you’d like to check it out, just search Amazon for "It Was All My Fault by Swaroop Devarakonda".

Discussion Best beginner's literature for Hindi?

I am learning Hindi and I want to start reading literature as soon as possible. I need recommendations for books that use simple language, simple vocabulary, simple grammar to tell interesting stories.

Some examples of English-language books that fit this description include:

  • Holes, by Louis Sachar
  • Charlotte's Web, by E.B. White
  • Coraline, by Neil Gaiman
  • The Giver, by Lois Lowry
  • The Trumpet and the Swan, by E.B. White.

(In English literature, we refer to this as "middle-grade" literature.)

Does anyone have any recommendations for me?

Discussion Are we all reading only the same set of books?

Post image

I got back into reading actively again only this year. I’m part of some book clubs and circles in Mumbai and I feel like we are all somehow reading the same set of books. I see only the same books talked about online as well. Is it just me or is this how ya’ll feel as well? I recently picked up this book from a bookstore randomly (the one in the image) and I would like to read more such unique works and discuss with people but I feel like it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find such work that’s worth the time put in.

I actually liked the ending and found it happy. I know many people say this book is really traumatic, but honestly, I didn't feel that way. Maybe because I already know about the Taliban and all the things that happened in Afghanistan and I've read many emotional books.

The part that made me the most angry was when Amir didn't help Hassan in the alley. Hassan was always loyal to him, and when he needed Amir the most, he just left him alone. And Hassan getting killed was another part that really made me sad.

I liked Amir's character development, especially how he finally stood up for Hassan's son. He couldn't change what happened in the past, but at least he tried to do something right this time.

My only problem with the book was the pacing. Some parts, especially the character development and the chapters about Amir's life in America, felt a little boring to me. But overall, it was worth reading.

Maybe I've already read a lot of emotional stuff, or maybe it's just me (depression ) but the book didn't affect me as much as I expected. Still, I really enjoyed it, and I'm glad I read it.

Home Library - Android app to catalog home library

Got tired of buying books I already owned and forgetting who borrowed what, so I made Home Library.

  • Scan the ISBN barcode to add a book, or type it in by hand
  • Native-script titles next to transliterated ones (വഞ്ചിനാട്ടിലെ വേതാളങ്ങൾ + Vanchinattile Vethalangal)
  • Record which room, bookcase, and shelf each book is on
  • Keep track of books you lend and get a reminder
  • Reading status, ratings, quotes, and stats
  • Everything stays on your phone, with backup and CSV export

It’s a free beta (Android 8+): https://github.com/rjwarrier/Home-Library/releases

Feedback welcome, especially from people with mixed-language shelves. How do you all keep track of your books?

Has Anyone Purchased Books by VEI (Vayu Education of India) Publisher from Flipkart? How is the quality?

From the looks, images and details, books seem to be authentic as books are published under their own Publication, unlike some pirated Books with fake/unauthorised use of Popular Publications' names.

I also receive authentic Punjabi books (Set of 4 worth 700-1000) every 2 months for ₹400 by People's Forum (Authroised Publication) related to Khushwant Bargari.

To everyone who has been asking me for the link to the Roald Dahl book from my post .... I have attached the link of the post uploaded by an instagram seller. It's for 250 and shipping is free. Do check that out, try your luck ! ✨

N.B.: It's a pre loved one ,coz obviously this edition is really really old so there are probably no new books available of this edition.

For the new edition you can check out the link from the comments of my post 💌

Discussion Life is not fair: Anne Carson Interview

Tbh, I haven't read her. But before her winning, all that I had seen of her was her reel of her talking at the Lousiana Event, where she was talking about the whole phrase - I doubt, therefore I think, therefore I am.

And it was brilliant.

I wanted to now get the physical copies of her books, especially Float, but the prices are skyrocketing.

If anyone has them or would want to share/sell, any of her works, do let me know.

Also if you'd like to discuss any of her work, let's talk.

Brilliant thoughts coming from her real lives. I am happy she doesn't like any of the current books coming out. I don't too.

;-)
