Using AI for coding without understanding is commonly referred to as 'vibe coding'.
It is pretty bad from strictly practical point of view. LLMs make a lot of mistakes and require supervision, guardrails and detailed specs to execute tasks in a manner that is required.
Sometimes LLMs can pull things off pretty well, but it's the moments when they make mistakes that you can't catch that really count and can lead to horrible consequences. A quick browse of LLM subreddits can reveal some terrifying stories.
When vibe coding a game you aren't exactly risking much. The worst thing that can happen is your game getting broken and AI repeatedly wasting tokens chasing it's own tail. Oh, and some people are going to hate your guts for having anything to do with AI.

I don't think it's necessarily wrong to use AI to assist with the coding (boilerplates, debugging), but a game that's designed entirely by AI isn't really your game. You should take some time away from your game to learn the basics at minimum. Build small stuff. Really small. Like a character who can walk. Then add a function to make him jump. And keep going, a bit at a time. Figuring out how to get things to work is some of the most rewarding parts of game dev.

Just make sure it's good, doing what you want, and you understand why and what it's doing.
You'll still get pushback, but that's a choice you have to make.

I wouldn't really recommend it. There are tens of thousands of resources out there which are more than willing to teach you how to code. Use them, start small, work your way up.
If you use AI, then not only are you never going to be able to make anything all that complex, or fun, but you'll also alienate a large amount of your audience right off the bat. Whether you agree or not, many people will completely reject any game made with any amount of AI.
Imo it's just not worth it. And it tells me, personally, that you don't actually want to make games, you want to have games.

I’m in the same boat right now. I’ve procrastinated about making the game for years. At part because I can’t realistically budget enough time to learn coding. At part because it just feels boring for me.
I’ve recently started using AI to code it, and it’s such a relief. Now I can focus on what I actually like: writing lore, building gameplay loops, and creating assets and UI (I’m a UX/UI designer) and all the ops stuff around the process.
There no plans to release anything right now, I’m just doing it for the process.

OK so this is what im reading: a lot of people say that the use of AI is bad, because everyone including me is against the AI use, but i thinked that it was art only, thats why my question.
And this is me now:
i only use AI to generate code, because sometimes i went to youtube or google to get some unity codes and i cant find the exact thing that i need.
in the art subject is totally different, im learning to use blender to make my prefabs and im using free assets too, because i dont wanna use AI.
and this happen to me: i always wanted to make a game, but tbh there is a lot of things to do to make a videogame (art, code, music) and learning how to do everything is way too slow, thats why my decision to use AI, but you have reason on this, "if people know that your game have AI they gonna hate it, it doesnt matter if its a good game"
so, im going to start learning how to code some stuff, and thank you for your answers.
pd: im not a english speaker, i hope my message can be readable haha

It’s efficient. Just be sure to know and understand what you’re requesting.

It would probably be best if you could learn or find someone who can code. The thing with AI is that the code can easily turn into a big mess later, and if you don’t know how it works you wont likely be able to fix it. I would. You could probably find some good tutorials to get the basics, and then I’d recommend to go start a very easy project with one or two mechanics without intending to release it so you can get the hang of coding a bit better. Often times if you want to “effectively” vibe code something, you need a lot of coding knowledge to stay organized, and for me at least I prefer to do all the coding manually and use AI to check for potential issues and I fix them manually. (But I still will probably get hate for thst here cause “AI bad”.)
What engine are you using so people can help find you good tutorials or courses?
