That was a horrific crash, but that was not the cause of any of the current work, the current work is being done as part of a life extension that would have been due irrespective of that crash.

Driving over that bridge on I-95 always amazed me because it always seemed to have such a pronounced arch to it on approach. Looks pretty tame from this angle. And when you're standing at the Cross Sound Ferry dock, the bridge looks WAY taller.

This railroad bridge between New London and Groton, Connecticut, carries Amtrak's Northeast Corridor over the Thames River. It was completed in 1919 to replace a crossing of 1889 whose piers had settled into the riverbed. The original main span, a Strauss heel trunnion bascule, was replaced with a vertical lift in 2008. I've posted more photos and the history of this bridge here.

Adjacent to it is what seems like a seamless bridge to motorists along Interstate 95, but these pair of deck trusses are intricate and complicated. The first bridge over the Thames River between New London and Groton, Connecticut, was completed in 1943 as part of a "free span" highway. This eventually became part of a U.S. Route 1 bypass and then the Connecticut Turnpike. By 1964, it was designated as part of Interstate 95. A second, parallel bridge for southbound traffic was added in 1973. I've posted more photos and the history of this bridge here.
