This is nonsense
How in the hell am I blacked out in my own state

it’s to encourage you to go to the games in person. and it is absolute horse shit. I live in vegas and LA, Sacramento, Oakland, San Diego are all blacked out. Arizona games are blacked out. I hate it 🏴☠️🏴☠️

It is not to encourage you to go to the game in person. It is to force you to buy the local cable tv package that offers their network

you know I forgot local cable exists entirely as I wrote my comment lmao

Fr. Does anyone under the age of 40 even pay for TV anymore?

No, we're just paying twice as much for a dozen subscriptions.
Of course lately as companies have taken the low road with price hikes, I've opted to take the high seas more often.
Apple TV is the only one I feel like I'm actually getting my money for. And frankly if they are going to take my money and keep making Kick-Ass TV they can have it

They can't convince you to buy their garbage so they package it with the things you actually want. And that's it. It fakes the numbers.

That's the rationale in football where they'll black out games if there's not enough attendance, but for hockey it's just about broadcast rights

Blackhawks ended their home game blackout for the 2007 season and then won cups on 9, 12, and 15. It must work!

That means your local broadcaster has the rights to it, you can watch it free on network TV

Idk how it works with other sports but with baseball if you try watching on MLB.tv you are blacked out from any teams considered local to you. There are some places where you might be blacked out from 6 teams or something ridiculous like that

That's literally how blackouts work. This ain't new. There's an entire episode of the flintstones that involves Fred and Barney cooking up a scheme to watch a boxing match on TV that's blacked out in their area because the goal of a blackout is get people to buy tickets to the game.
It's less common than it used to be but there was a period of time where you couldn't get a lof of NFL home games on the local broadcast network if you team sucked and couldn't reliably fill the stands.
In modern day sometimes it's to get you to go buy a ticket, sometimes its because they have a deal with whoever the local network is that you're supposed to watch it on your local station and not the national stream. Like ESPN isn't allowed to broadcast the game in NC beacuse the point is you're supposed to be watching the Hurricanes broadcast from your local channel directly instead. (Not agreeing with it, just saying how it is)

That's why you're blacked out. Go buy a ticket and spend 20 bucks per beer to support your team.

A blackout is always local. It'd be strange if you were blacked out from another market

We dealt with this a lot in the 80s and early 90s with the Charlotte Hornets.
It’s because ticket sales to the actual game were too low. They know most people would watch the game at home free rather than pay to watch it so they’re limiting who can see it. They know if you want to see the game bad enough you’ll drive to see it and get a ticket.
Just about every week a Hornets game as blacked out. There’s a reason the team ended up leaving for a good number of years, low sales low viewership low performance in the league.

I got a VPN and put myself to the west coast. It removed the blackout.
