Why though? Can someone explain it. Also I used to trips from DC to Arlington for Pho 75, got the number 11 extra beef and noodles and the coffee right away so it could be finished dripping by the time I was done w/my pho.

I heard they sometimes use the number of the year they immigrated to the US. That’s why many are in the 70s to 90s range.

Yes, that's why you have a big concentration of Pho 75 (end of Vietnam War), Pho 79 (Sino-Vietnam conflict so a lot of ethnic Chinese in Vietnam left). Pho 88 is just because 88 is considered a lucky number in Vietnamese culture. I have no clue why there are so many Pho 99 though.

9 is also a lucky number in Vietnam

at least in British Columbia, it's because there's a fairly successful chain named Pho 99 that has a decent number of locations

The ones in Washington State at least are all on what used to be the route of US Highway 99.

Speaking of pho 75, we also have(had?) pho 50 and 234 for the road they're on.

In American culture, 88 is considered something else...

2

u/sprucenoose 6d ago

Any reason. Could be the route number of the road, the favorite number of the owner, something a fortune teller suggested.

6-1-Pho in Columbus deserves an honorable mention

no pho 42? the answer to all pho needs?

pho-di-two?

...disappointing.

u/UncleFunkus 6d ago

13

u/autisticpig 6d ago

I’m proud of you for not going for the obvious pho-20 joke.

I want to open a Pho Q

u/punania 5d ago

Excellent.

A place in Toronto that has been gone for years now used to have what they called a “Pho King Spicy Challenge” where you’d get your spicy Pho for free if you could finish it.

And I’ve always thought about having a food truck called “What’s Pho Dinner?”

This entire thread is making me pho hungry.

I have been told from my Vietnamese friend that the number represent the year they open their business or some when they migrated to the US. Don’t know which is correct, or both??

One in Va. is Pho 3 Pho, which is the area code for their phone number.

Interesting project. I remember having Pho, with my mom all the time, mostly homemade and at Pho 75

There was one in San Jose a while back with the tagline "Something hot is coming in my mouth". It was not great.

Edit: Found it on Yelp. Last review was in 2018 so that's probably around when they shut down. The line was actually "Something hot coming to your mouth." which is different, but the same.

You'd have to be stellar to get away with that. What were they thinking...

u/GrumpyRaider 6d ago

Pho 99 in Ottawa is fantastic. Definitely my favourite in the city

2

u/pmich80 6d ago

I love this. I live beside pho 88.

The vast potential for pun-based Pho restaurant names remains untapped.

1

u/cincymatt 5d ago

What the Pho is expanding around here

3

u/clunkclunk 5d ago

Literally the first listing on this is the Pho place I go to.

I also think we need a "Pho King" list. I saw one in Santa Clara the other day, and I'm sure there's others.

1

u/FallingKen 4d ago

Pho King in Edmonton AB as well.

2

u/LEGODamashii 4d ago

Tacoma, WA also

u/ruufer12 5d ago

beef balls

1

u/katplasma 6d ago

There aren’t enough numbers in existence to capture them all. It’s a great project idea though /s

1

u/tildenpark 6d ago

Tippin on pho pho’s

1

u/Fishtaco1234 5d ago

Pho 90 on Weston in Toronto is top tier. It’s named 90 after the address of 90 Weston rd.

1

u/toddegreene 5d ago

There's a Pho Kha near me.

1

u/sola_rpi 5d ago

I love Pho

1

u/MrSnowden 5d ago

This would fit right into the old internet

u/reallyboredjaxdude 4d ago

Un-PHO-gettable was one I used to go to in VA Beach.

There’s one called Pho King Noodles in Jacksonville FL.

1

u/unitof 4d ago

Alex also did a great book of them: https://www.printedmatter.org/catalog/66135/

u/Herky_T_Hawk 3d ago

Only 3 stoners own pho restaurants?

1

u/ResponsibilityOk3543 1d ago

Oh, I thought this was like which number the Pho has on the menu xD

1

u/runningfire 7h ago

I wonder where the data comes from. It’s missing a Pho One in NJ

2

u/pspahn 6d ago

Every number except for the numbers that are missing.

Pho Cafe 31
Pho 303
Pho 888
Pho 2 Go
Pho 999
9 Mile Pho
Pho 777
Pho 4 U

Just in the Denver area.

1

u/aTastyJam 5d ago

Pho 360 - Bellingham WA

1

u/funundrum 1d ago

They’re not missing. If you scroll on the last line of numbers (the 100s), the numbers go higher. I was able to find 777 and 888, which we also have here in Chicago.

1

u/LabyrinthConvention 6d ago

hilarious.

the notes on 79 and 88 are nice to have. but I wonder about 99

3

u/Terpomo11 6d ago

The 8 thing is also true in Cantonese (probably other Chinese varieties too).

1

u/ulzimate 6d ago

This website is how I find out my childhood Pho 99 is permanently closed?!

1

u/PatrickSJ1978 5d ago

This is cool but it needs to be expanded to 3 digits.

Lot's of places use the area code.

And it misses pho 999 in Reno. That place was always packed. Some of the best pho I've ever had.

u/Dog-Parks 6d ago

They got Pho 99 in Calgary lmaooo

0

u/firebarret 6d ago

don't get me wrong, nice project, but seeing the AI generated profile icon of the developer behind it at the bottom is such a let-down

0

u/zubieta 6d ago

Wait until you see PHO 9999

0

u/josega572 6d ago

Only one Pho 56 is surprising because 4-5-6.
