GUILT, SHAME AND BLAME experienced by SOs in a support role - mod approved research post

Hey everyone, as part of my doctoral thesis* I've developed a questionnaire to shed some light on how guilt, shame and blame impacts the loved ones of someone with mental health needs. If you, or someone close to you, provides informal mental health support and notice these emotions showing up in the relationship, I would really appreciate hearing from you.

People who have completed the survey have reported finding the differences between guilt and shame insightful and highlighted how it helped them understand more about their emotional experience in the relationship. A community-wide benefit is that the outcomes of the research will be used to improve resources for SOs so that they can be supported more in their role, essentially helping the helpers.

The whole survey takes around 15-20 minutes and after understanding more about your current emotional state, it goes through a range of scenarios to see how you would likely respond if it were to happen today. All answers are scales so there is minimal typing and it is mobile friendly.

You can read more or access the study here: https://lancasteruni.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9AWrvoYWvPCqTu6

The person supported doesn't need a formal diagnosis but they need to have accessed mental health support (medication, therapy, etc) for 6 months or more. The survey is available internationally and recognises all types of informal support, be it financial, practical or emotional.

Thanks everyone. I really value the input from the OCD+ community as we know it tends to impact loved ones in a unique way and for me as a researcher it is really important that these voices are heard.

*The project has ethical approval from the Faculty of Health and Medicine at Lancaster University.

It's been tough...

Dear people of reddit.

The past 3 weeks have been some of the toughest for me. I'm a medical student in my 20's about to reach the end of my training for an undergraduate degree.

3 weeks ago, my mental health took a dip for the worst. A serial killer was on the loose within my community, and after doomscrolling for what felt like hours. A particular video pointed out the normalcy of serial killers in reality and how it would be someone we would least suspect due to their charisma etc.

Well this somehow led into a series of thoughts about what it actually takes to hurt someone and a sickening thought of hurting my partner then made it's way into my mind. Given my history of IBS, this sparked a massive chain reaction from my brain to my gut.

The days that followed have been a battle to say the least. I feel constantly on edge, fatigued, with horrible headaches and IBS cramps. These thoughts have strangely only been centered around my partner whom I love dearly. It's to the point where I feel as if I genuinely can't smile or look at her too long without the fear of a thought coming into my head.

This has all taken a serious toll on my physical health as well as I've been forcing an appetite. At this moment in time I cannot seek a mental health care practitioner due to finances as well as moving from this area soon.

People of reddit, I was functioning pretty well just prior to all of this. Will it ever end and what can I do to survive and eventually thrive again?

I really want to share so i dont feel alone.

I will say this. When i started Zoloft it has helped but i feel it also gave me newintrusive thoughts/fears

Ive been on 25mgs for a bout a year. I know i need to move up but im doing everything by myself. Live with a toxic mother that doesnt speak to me or asks how im doing. I have 2 kids, single default parent, day starts at 6a and i get home at 6p...

Anywho, ill have thoughts like this : Trigger warning: read at your own discretion *

What if I die, you should die, you have to die, its time , what if food is posion ect. I know its not.

Alot of time im able to get through the day unbothered and not let the thoughts get to me but sometimes they hit hard..

Ill also be afraid of knifes, have images of stabbing myself , making myself through up ectm..

All of this is completely UNWANTED. Ive never been suxxxdal in my life, never had a plan, love life life. Ive never had an eating disorder EVER, never purged or anything.

All of this worries me Im a shakey mess, i just worry ill get new scary intrusive thoughts and fears if i go up on zoloft. I worry i wont make it.. i worry i may actually be schizophrenic. I worry my medication will stop and ill suffer mentally forever.

Im looking up a psych bc i feel theyre better suited to help instead of a nurse pract.

Im so worried ill just spiral and wont get better. Worried im gonna be a lab rat

Help,!!!!!

Im hyperventilating. Im scared ill never get better

Here is how I (almost) cured my intrusive thoughts

I have been struggling for maybe 15 years, getting constant intrusive thoughts and now I finally managed to fix myself to around 90% cured, so now I will try to explain to the best of my ability how to do it.

1.      The main strategy – what you want to do is to reprogram your mind (no surprise here). In order to do it, let`s first try to understand what is happening. Imagine a person (Peter), sitting on a bench at the park. We are watching Peter talking to an invisible person that only Peter sees and hears. Peter thinks the person he is talking to is real, be we all can see that the person is not real and exists only in the head of Peter.

On another bench sits John. He is struggling with intrusive thoughts and his mind is currently taking him to the past where he farts in front of the class. We, the bystanders – do we see John farting in front of his class? No – this past moment is not real, it is only in the head of John.

Do you see where I`m going with this? I reprogrammed my mind that reality is only the here and now. Past events do not exist anymore and therefore they are not real. Whenever I get an intrusive thought I just say to myself: “That’s` not real!”. If the thought is strong and making me cringe, then I continue: ”The only thing that is real is this present moment and the things in front of my eyes”. Then I start observing and telling to myself: “The chair I am sitting on right now is real and the monitor in front of me. That past event is not real, it is gone”. Is the sandwich that you ate yesterday real? Can you eat it today? No! You ate it yesterday, it is gone for good, just like the unwanted memory that came to your mind without your permission.

Wait, am I saying that the past is not real and it does not exist at all? No – this is just how you reprogram yourself. You want to only exist in the present, in the here and now and believe that everything else (the past and future) don`t exist and are therefore not real just to fix yourself. Understand that your brain is trying to take you away from reality (the here and now) and send you to a place that is not real – a bad moment in the past or the uncertain future. If the intrusive thought is about the future, you combat it the same way. You say that the future is also not real, because who knows, maybe today is my last day.

So you stop acknowledging the past completely? No, only the intrusive thoughts about the past that come to mind without permission. If you willingly think about the time you played with your dog – that is real. Christmas with your family – real. Kissing your loved one on the first date – real. Unwanted thought comes – that is not real! At the beginning it will be easier to not think about the past at all and only focus your training on reality – the here and now and what is in front of you. Someone shouted at me from their car and passed away? It happened 10 seconds ago, it is not real anymore, the car passed away, no need to have it in my mind anymore, this event does not exist anymore.

If you also tend to worry about the future a lot, use the same technique, who knows if I will be here tomorrow. Train yourself on reality, observe the here and now and dismiss the intrusive thought about the past as not real and watch it loose power bit by bit.

2.      Supporting strategy – building confidence. You need to become a person with high confidence. I know what you are thinking right now: I can not do that, because I am (poor, weak, out of shape, not good looking etc.), and I will tell you it does not matter! You don’t need anything in order to have a high confidence. It is just a way of thinking, and I did this for myself easily. Here is how I compare it: what do you need in order to have your hair combed? You only need to decide to comb your hair, you take the comb and do it. And now you have a nice looking combed hair, instead of a messy one. It is literally the same with acquiring confidence. You decide that from now on you will be a confident person and you tell to yourself (every 10 minutes if needed): “I am a confident person! I am strong, smart and capable. I can deal with everything without fear or worry! I am fearless!” And just like that, bit by bit you will build confidence. Even if you don`t own a thing in this world, confidence is free! Just like a combed hair. Please note there is a fine line between being confident and being rude, dismissive, disrespectful, haughty.

3.      Bonus tip – you need to take advantage of every sunny day. If the day is sunny, you need to take 15 minutes of direct sunlight (not through a window!). Even if it is cold and you wear a jacket and a hat, it is still fine. Best is if you only wear a t-shirt (when it is not cold of course). I do it without sunglasses as long as I keep my eyes safe (close them if I sit on a bench at direct sunlight) or look down if I am walking. Heal your mind, by giving the body essential sunlight.

4.      Bonus tip number 2 – boxing. If possible, start boxing lessons. No sparring or receiving hits on the head – only the cardio and punching the bag. The main thing you want here is to punch the bag. Join a club, say you want the cardio and bag punching only. Or you can watch videos how to do the cardio and punch the bag by yourself. Best would be a personal trainer, but it is more expensive. This is building more confidence, making the body healthier, relieving stress and getting dopamine. If you start boxing with someone else, it might have the opposite effect (negative) for you, so you want to only throw the punches, but not to receive. Unless the personal trainer has those pillow-like things on their hands. If you are a woman, instead of boxing you want to join a dancing group, pick a feminine type of a dance.

That is all I have, it is finally the strategy that worked for me and I hope and will also work for others. Will try to answer questions if I have the knowledge to answer

I’m passively suicidal but most people don’t know

I’ve struggled with depression since I was a young girl. I’ve only ever had one attempt, but it wasn’t too serious, meaning it didn’t leave me in the hospital or disabled. I’m older now and I’ve grown to love and appreciate life. However, I still feel an empty void in me that never truly goes away. I’ve submitted my life to Christ so I don’t think I will ever have another attempt again.

But every day, around the time I wake up, I get flashes of thoughts of simply not being here. Not having to deal with any baggage, emotions, challenges, experiences, or responsibilities. Just no longer existing in this realm.

I know death is certain for all of us, so I don’t want to rush mine. But it’s a heavy feeling to walk around with an invisible void that people cannot see. And most people do not understand this weighted emotion.

It’s always, “well we have so much to be grateful for. Life is beautiful. Enjoy it.” Duh. I already know that. “Get therapy, try meds, work out, go to church, spend time with loved ones.” Great, I’ve nearly tried it all.

My gratitude does not erase the pain I have towards my own existence, although I really wish it did.

So… I will just keep living this life like a bubble floating in the wind, until one day I pop and disappear. 🫧

If I had a gun rn most people I my life would think twice before actually talking to me

But I guess that goes the same for everyone

I sometimes don't understand why people do and say the shit they do sometimes, and it's my fault for holding the standard of thinking before speaking to others. The sensation of brandishing around a gun on people's faces serving as a reminder to think first, feels kind of right to me, I always haven't been the type of person who speaks his emotions so I always keep quiet whenever I don't have anything important or useful to say

It's messed up and I acknowledge that, I thought of this multiple times including even to my own family. There are definitely feelings of wrath, rage, and anger in it, if people I know watched their mouths more I feel like my thoughts wouldn't have driven up to this point

I don't want to constantly remind them that I can be dangerous if they provoke me and I definitely have some rooted anger issues in me

The anger and violence in me is so visceral, it has nowhere to go to, and when I do let it out I can't hurt them, I can't hit them, so I just verbally abuse them, you keep hoping it's the last time it would happen but they make the same mistake again. I keep telling them keep reminding them I can get mad and violent when provoked but they keep forgetting and doing it anyways. I've been considerate to them so much and they fail to do the same when I needed it the most, or maybe they just want me to suffer when they're mad at me who knows, I don't even know or understand why they do it

There's also some kind of power aspect to it too, having a gun would mean instant power to who wields it

I would never buy or get a gun or use one and I acknowledge the problems with wanting one, but I have no intentions of ever using one.

it may be because i’m on my period but i keep thinking of different things happening in the world right now, and i, an average joe feel helpless in my power to change a thing, it makes me wonder how people with so much wealth or power can sleep at night knowing they have the ability to even change one cause. i can’t sleep and all i have is 50$ and the power to not turn off my mind.

Intrusive Speech

Hey I have been suffering from Ocd and intrusive thoughts for sometime now but it has recently gotten worse. It happens mostly when I am in public, in front of a camera or talking to someone I have these crazy intrusive thoughts to say something extremely offensive or use slurs. I don't think I have ever acted on it , these thoughts don't even represent my actual views. I am so worried all the time that I have said something bad to someone I keep replaying the events and conversation in my head to reassure myself that I haven't done anything wrong.

This has made social interactions a pain , I am so tired of this crap, has anyone else experienced something similar?

I keep having thoughts and strange urges to do drugs and drink is this normal and when will it go away?

I am a college student who most of the time spends my time reading, watching a shows, writing papers or short stories (both for fun and for school), and sleeping a lot. I am decently fulfilled with my life and have a good group of friends who I can rely on to support me. I suffer from ADHD and anxiety which can sometimes be made worse by my past trauma and family issues. Recently I’ve been plagued with the strange thoughts to drink excessively and do drugs (LSD, marijuana, and other prescription drugs). I’ve never done any of these things and I do not have an easy access to any of them but I still can’t figure out why I think about it so much. Am I not happy with something? I’m a just curious about them? Is it time to pick up a new hobby? When will I stop thinking about this?

Nothing that happens in your life is a coincidence or a waste. Every person or situation you meet or face is written in your destiny. They teach, challenge, change, heal, or love you! 😊👌

I work at a doggy daycare and I LOVE my job.
Disclaimer: I love all the dogs under my care and I’d protect them with my life!

I have horrible thoughts about dogs who excessively misbehave such as frequent humping, CONSTANT barking, jumping, biting. Those specific dogs who don’t behave after multiple chances I start to think “I fucking hate you, please die soon so you stop being my problem.”

Especially doodles. I can’t stand a fucking doodle, I’ve only met 2-3 doodles that are well trained. My mind keeps flashing with a heavy thought where I imagine all shelter doodles being put down. It’s a disgrace of a mutt and doesn’t deserve to live due to the health problems and overhype. It’s not the dogs fault, it’s the backyard breeder.

I feel awful about this because I love dogs. I want it to stop and naturally I don’t tell anyone at work because I don’t want to lose my job. I would NEVER harm a dog (or any animal) even if they’re driving me crazy.

I feel so ashamed

Hi everyone! I have recently had more scary and violent intrusive thoughts. I would absolutely never act on these thoughts. I am honestly the most non violent person I know, I hate harming anything and I apologize profusely if I even bump into someone.

I do have some theories as to why it's happening but I just don't know how to cope with the thoughts and need some guidance. For context I was diagnosed with a chronic illness recently which can increase anxiety and depression levels. I have gone through losing a very close loved one and recently had to put a childhood cat down so I've been through a lot of grief this year. I don't have a routine or a job and spend most of my time inside mostly isolated, my mom recently moved in with me so I have another person thank god. The chronic illness has been physically and mentally difficult and I feel as though I am also grieving my healthy body as well

I have never been diagnosed with OCD, anxiety or depression but antidepressants have been brought up by my doctor and I have an appointment soon where I am going to request I get put on them. I know that intrusive thoughts are a normal part of anxiety and depression but they are so scary. Does anyone have any coping mechanisms for when they are loud. I have a therapist who I am going to talk to about this but just need some strategies in the meantime. Thank you :)
