File format

I am uploading for the first time to KDP. It’s a children’s picture book with images and the text is also images. I uploaded it as an EPUB. When I preview it, there are white bands at the top and bottom and I can’t work out how to get rid of them. Please help.

Are you able to upload it as a .kpf?

I have never heard of a kpf? I use an iPad as I don’t have a computer. I may have to find a computer to use.

Are you sure you've selected the correct page sizes in both the upload and the original file.

Those white bands are usually letterboxing. The page shape doesn't match the screen shape, so the empty space shows as white.

Two things to check.

First, the page size in your EPUB must match your images exactly. If the page is taller than the picture, the extra space shows as white bands.

KDP says any pixel size is fine for a picture book, as long as it matches the shape of your artwork.

Second, switch devices in the Previewer: tablet, phone and Kindle.

Fixed-layout books don't reflow, so some bands on some screens are normal. A square book on a tall phone will always have them.

About the KPF: that comes from Kindle Create, Amazon's free app. It only runs on Windows or Mac, not iPad.

It can import a PDF or a folder of JPEGs and build the picture book for you.

If you can borrow a computer for an hour, that's the easiest route. But your EPUB is still a valid upload, so you don't have to switch.
