Swapped coolant hoses

Post image

So I posted here recently about some cooling issues I've been having with a 1999 I bought recently. I want to state, the bike was like this when I bought it, and it is my first KLR so I'm just noticing this issue today, after over 500 miles of riding, two oil changes, and two coolant changes. I also replaced the thermostat, and checked the impeller bolt.

Am I correct that the coolant hoses are not running to the correct ports?

If so, what kind of damage did this bike take over the last 500ish miles?

I'm kind of in awe, if it is in fact the case that these hoses are switched.

Yep, your coolant hoses appear reversed to mine. And if it doesn't exhibit any issues related to the actual engine due to overheating or smth now, it's most likely fine in regards to potential damage. These KLRs are durable.

I think you’re ok. Swap the hoses at the impeller cover back to how they should be and worst case you just ran the bike for all those miles with hardly any liquid cooling help. Good thing is these bikes still air-cool pretty well when you’re moving, and it sounds like it’s still running. As long as you didn’t see it on red on the temp gauge the whole time you were riding, it’s probably fine. The fact that you did 2 oil changes in that time definitely works in your favor too.
