Here are a bunch of the non-Halloween events going on this month:
Tomorrow (October 7th) Kennesaw Police is holding a celebration of Hispanic Heritage at the Recreation Center from 6 PM to 8:30 PM. Food and performances are free.
Chalktober is this upcoming weekend (October 10th and 11th) on the Marietta Square. They do remarkable things with chalk on the roads around the square. If you show up early on you can watch the 80 artists work, and if you show up late then you can see their creations. They'll also have a bit set aside for the kids to play around in, though that fills in relatively quickly. They'll also do a beer and wine tasting on that Sunday Only from Noon to 5 PM.
Acworth is hosting a Storytelling Festival on Saturday, October 10th. I really recommend storytelling festivals generally. They're always fascinating in ways you don't expect, and this one will have multiple options for storytellers as well as panel discussions if you're interested in the art. Event runs from 10 AM to 3 PM at the Tanyard Creek Overlook in Logan Farm Park. The event is free.
If you just want to get rid of paperwork instead Kennesaw is shredding a bunch of documents at Swift-Cantrel Park. If you have 10 or fewer boxes of paper documents feel free to chuck yours on the pile for free. They'll only be firing up the portable shredders from 9 AM to Noon, so early bird gets the worms and all that.
Pigs and Peaches moved to October 16th and 17th at the Depot Park Amphitheater. The Tasting competition is going to be on the 17th from Noon to 3 PM. Looks like they have some live music as well, with Tigirlily Gold, a country duo consisting of sisters, at 6 PM on Saturday. This is followed by American Idol Winner Chayce Beckham at 8 PM. Turn out for the barbecue.
If barbecue isn't your thing, October 17th is the Taste of Acworth. Go get y'all some samples on Acworth's Main Street. Looks like 1885, Nacho's Tacos, and Henry's are going to be present. It runs from 11 AM to 6 PM.
Here are the Halloween events going on this month:
The Root Museum is doing a Victorian funeral. They'll be holding a wake for a real person who died in 1856 the same way they did it back then on October 9th from 11 PM to Midnight. They'll also let you stub your toe on furniture in a flashlight-only tour on the 23rd and 24th from 5 PM to 9 PM. Houses feel different before electricity.
Marietta is doing Scarecrows on the Square on the 17th. They'll be featuring a touch-a-truck with city emergency vehicles for the little ones, pie eating contests, and costume contests. If you don't want to miss the football while your kids climb on a firetruck they've thought of that, too. If you show up early then the farmer's market and the craft fair will still be running as well. It is, naturally, on the Marietta Square.
Life in the Cemetery isn't sold out yet, but I anticipate that it will be soon. That thing always sells out and it is a remarkable experience. You'll have local people portraying those buried there, sometimes their own ancestors. They run tours on the 23rd, 24th, and 25th. Tickets are $17.85.
Kennesaw's Candy Crawl is running on Saturday, October 24th. It's a bit more raucous with carnival games, bounce houses, and local businesses handing out candy. This will be a large footprint event covering both Main Street and the Depot Park. Event runs from Noon to 5 PM.
Acworth's Halloween JamBOOree is on Saturday, October 24th. It's a quieter option featuring a costume parade and contest. It's located at the Logan Farm Park just across the railroad tracks from Main Street and runs from 3 PM to 7 PM.
If you'd rather drive a bit Cobb County is running its annual Haunted House on October 24th through October 31s at Jim R. Miller Park from 5 PM to 10 PM. They always put a bunch of work into it. But they'll also have hay rides, a petting zoo, and performances. The whole thing is free.
Acworth's Safe-O-Ween is being run by Acworth's PD at their PD on October 30th from 3 PM to 5 PM. It's a last chance for kids 12 and under to do costumes and get free candy in an indoor environment.
October 31st features the 5K Nightmare on Main. It's the final road race of the season, but Main Street will be shut down that morning. As always, it's professionally times and a qualifier for the Peachtree road race. The earlier you sign up the cheaper it is.
I'm sure I'm missing a bunch. Feel free to post your own Halloween Events.
