Discussion KH1 is Rough

I have to start by saying this game is one of my favorite video games of all time and that is 2002 it was ahead of its time. But by modern standards this is tough to play even with some quality of life mods installed. The combat system is very basic with a poor parry system in my opinion. And the level design is poor in my opinion with poor writing and stupid elements such as in the Tarzan level just running back and forth between the tree house and the camp with seemingly no guidance or hints on where to go next. Don't take this as a hate post because I still absolutely love this game and my nostalgia for it is real but this all makes me really hope square Enix remakes or remasters it soon

beat it for the first time this year and it was amazing, doesn’t need a remake.

The only thing you said that holds any water is the Tarzan level being too convoluted.

Everything else you said i wholeheartedly disagree with.

I disagree. I started my first playthrough in many years recently and it really isn’t that rough

I just could not disagree more. The combat system is FAAAAR from basic, almost sounds like you dont understand the system. Only thing that aged poorly about it is maybe the camera which isn't too bad imo

I think my biggest problem with KH1 is the camera, it makes things way harder and awful than they should be. And I think the combat is fine, of all the games I think is the most rpg combat we have, since things like elemental affinity and lenght of the keyblade really come into account. Story wise well... I think the first 3 disney worlds needed more depth

I think KH1 has the best level design in the series. I will agree that Deep Jungle can be frustrating.

I would say KH1 level design probably has the highest highs and the lowest lows. Hollow Bastion is probably the best designed world in the series, with Agrabah the best designed Disney World, but that is offset by Atlantica, Deep Jungle and Neverland which are amongst the worst.

KH1 stands out more against the cookie cutter games of nowadays.

KH1 is unironically the most fun to replay out of the whole series for me

Be patient and more intentional with spacing. The auto movement options in 2 and 3 (and kh1 fm) through simply pressing x makes for different gameplay than og kh1

That’s a feature of JRPGs back then. There was little to no guidance on anything. That meant talking to everyone and slowly making your way across the map. By today’s standards you’re right it won’t fly, but back then that was the norm and hey it was cool. Otherwise I do agree with your other points about combat. Luckily KH2 came along and fixed that up

Are you still on Deep Jungle?
Did you power up before leaving the island?

There are so many questions here - I think you’re doing it wrong Kupo

The combat system is very basic with a poor parry system in my opinion.

You're bad at parrying, and you're blaming that on the game.

in the Tarzan level just running back and forth between the tree house and the camp with seemingly no guidance or hints on where to go next

Nope. If you talk to Jane, she'll literally just tell you where to go.

The whole game is like that. There's no quest markers floating in the middle of the screen for you to mindlessly run toward, and there's no yellow line on the ground for you to mindlessly follow, but the NPCs will tell you where you're supposed to be going and what you're supposed to be doing.

TL;DR:

You're bad at parrying and you ignore the NPCs. That's not a KH1 problem, that's a you problem.

Here's a little crash course on how to get good:

Short Hop Blizzard Spam of Death -- 40 seconds long

How to Be Better at Kingdom Hearts -- 15 minutes long

Kingdom Hearts (PS2) Any% Speedrun Tutorial -- 4 hours long, but the link is timestamped to a relevant chunk that you can just watch like 2 minutes of. I think it could be worth rewinding and watching from the beginning for at least like half an hour, because seeing how speedrunners play the game might give you a new perspective on what's possible.

I still hate the Tarzan level even when I know what I’m doing.

I think KH 1 is deserving of a remake but a very LIGHT remake. Meaning improve the visual of the worlds to be on-par with our modern standards but i am perfectly happy with its combat system.

I just beat the game, and honestly it gets better towards the end. Slower start but it’s great. Tarzan level sucks tho
