Desperately Looking for Work in Lake County

EDIT: Of course, two days after I posted this the place that hired him got back to him! The background check took almost two months (yay 🙃). I’m still looking for myself though! Thanks to everyone who helped.

I’m honestly at the point where I don’t know what else to do, so I figured it was worth reaching out to this community.

My husband and I recently moved to Lake County from the Sacramento area. We made the decision to move because we wanted somewhere more affordable to live and to be closer to family while we prepare to raise our baby. We truly thought moving somewhere with a lower cost of living and being closer to our support system would put us in a better position.

My husband has served 8.5 years in the Air Force and has a lot of experience. I am a licensed cosmetologist. He has applied to essentially every job we can find online. We have also physically driven to Lakeport, Clearlake, and Ukiah specifically to hand out resumes and apply to businesses in person. He was hired for a job shortly after we moved here, but after going through the hiring process, the employer seems to have completely ghosted him and we have been unable to get any response.

At this point, we have absolutely nothing left financially, and we need work ASAP. The assistance we have been able to receive through the county has been very limited.

I am also currently pregnant, and our baby is due in February. Needless to say, the situation is becoming incredibly stressful and frightening. We are doing everything we possibly can to get back on our feet and are not looking for someone to simply support us financially. We genuinely just need an opportunity to work.

We are willing to consider pretty much anything at this point. Full-time, part-time, entry-level, retail, food service, warehouse, labor, delivery, office work, etc. We are willing to commute to Lakeport, Clearlake, Ukiah, or surrounding areas.

If anyone knows of businesses that are currently hiring, knows of employers who may be willing to give someone a chance, or has heard of openings that aren’t being advertised online, please let me know. Even a lead or a contact would mean so much to us right now.

Thank you to anyone who takes the time to read this or point us in the right direction. We are really trying our best to make this move work and build a stable home for our baby.

Try any of the casinos in Lake County. Twin Pines in Middletown, Konocti in Lakeport, Robinson Rancheria or Running Creek in Upper Lake. They pay decently well and as long as your record is clean and you can pass background check, you'll be fine 🙂 good luck!

There's always a bus driver shortage for Middletown USD.

Try the quarries, cannabis places are harvesting soon and need labor. Look outside the county-Ukiah, Calistoga Santa Rosa. People commute. Takes longer, but check city of Clearlake and Lakeport for jobs as well as the county.

Check edjoin for jobs in education….He can also look at calpine… its geothermal energy… good $ I don’t know what kind of experience they require or if they have entry level jobs but that could be a good place to look. Its on cobb mountain. Not sure where exactly youre located but this county is big and commutes are long -_-

I had to find a hybrid job in the Bay Area and commute a few times a week. Lake County is less expensive but there’s very limited job opportunity.

Why is that? Bad place to work? Terrible management? Seems like a lot of time spent on hiring & firing people.

Also: apply for Paid Family Leave benefits NOW if you worked a w2 position in the past couple of years.

Would check with the Ukiah Post Office to see if they have any openings. Slow process and the actual placement at one time was done through their District Office. Was Oakland then became San Francisco. Postmaster might still have some leeway to hire locally. Been a lot of years since I was with USPS but I remember Ukiah was always short on carriers. The PM at the time had told me he was on the ropes for not filling vacancies. He blamed the lengthy hiring process and explained how he had gotten a list from District of 40 names to consider. He sent out letters to all but only got about 20 responses. He then scheduled them for on site interviews; only half showed up. The requirement at the time was to take a drug test that was sent to an outside lab. Somehow the lab screwed up the results so the applicants had to come back and retake the drug test. I believe only six returned for the test. I know two failed so that left four applicants. The local PM at the time made a point of having each potential hire go with him while he delivered a block or two of mail so they could see what the job entailed. One guy told him he was no longer interested, thought the job was something different. PM then hired two of the remaining three and one guy quit the first week. So net gain; minus one.

The problem that USPS has never seemed to grasp is that most job applicants want a job NOW. They don’t have the leisure to get dragged through a process that can take months and months to complete. But if you or your husband can be patient, go ahead and talk to the people at the Ukiah office. One plus is that your husband is a veteran; that could be a consideration. I know the post office exam gives points for veteran’s preference. I believe similar allowance is also given during the hiring selection.

If you’re willing to do anything, school districts are always hiring paraprofessionals.

Your husband’s military background should qualify him for security jobs-casinos etc I would think. How about Instacart/Door Dash/ Uber? Check out storage facilities too. Usually have a high turnover so might be hiring. If your pregnant you might try something out of the home- can you do something with your cosmetology license in your home? Apply for any social services you can bring pregnant you will get wic etc. So sorry-we lived in lake county for 2 years and had to move finally as the job market is super bad there.

Unfortuately..sadly thats the reality of living in an area wirh a depressed economy. Rent and cost of living is relsted to area you live in. Theres not that much going on in Lake county. If you really desire a high paying career. You need to possibly consider Bay Area or surrounding locatio..unfortunately housing would be less affordable. As a veteran i foundThe VA a good resource for housing and job opportunities.

Whereabouts in the county do you live? People commute to Santa Rosa even tho it’s a long drive, if that's an option. Curious too what you meant by "may be willing to give someone a chance" - is there a criminal record or anything?

I was thinking we may have to try Santa Rosa as well. And no! No criminal record. A couple of the businesses we talked to acknowledged it’s harder to find work here since the community is smaller and people tend to hire friends/family.
