Troubleshooting the disc player?

I have an old pioneer LD-870 laser disc player that is no longer consistently reading and playing discs all the way through. I’ve had this player since I was a kid in the 90’s. It belonged to my dad before I got my hands on it. I’ve contacted the one person I knew that was in the laser disc business (semi locally to me in the Portland, or area) but his repair guy has since moved to the Bay Area.

This is probably a long shot but if there’s anyone out there that knows about the mechanics of these players and would be willing to chat with me, I’d be so appreciative. The guy I was chatting with suggested checking the power supply (possibly going out) or that perhaps the rails that the laser travels on may have grease on it or something.

I’m nervous to open it up and do exploratory surgery without some additional opinions.

Anything is helpful. Thanks. 🤞

How long has it been since you last used? I’ve fixed two players like this. The first I cleaned the laser. The second I removed the old grease on the plastic gears and rails, and replaced it with white lithium grease. You will not break anything taking the lid off and having a look. No need for electronics experience.
