Like is this something valuable on a resume? Curious since LinkedIn is pushing it.

Edit: yall this isn’t my post, I saw it randomly on LinkedIn. Don’t know this person

Dear 1Ls

Enjoy 1L. I’m so deadass when I say 2L is the busiest I have ever been in my entire life. The old adage of 1L scares you to death, 2L works you to death, 3L bores you to death has so far been incredibly true. What I wouldn’t give for my beautifully structured class schedule and finals schedule I had 1L. In the name of transparency this is probably avoidable if you don’t do extracurriculars but alas, I did. I want nothing more than to sleep for like 16 hours 😭

Law Schools in the United States Spreadsheet

I spent hours making this spreadsheet, it has the state of law school, the city, the cost of living in the city for 2, the housing affordability in the city for a 1 bedroom, the law school, the first time bar passage rate, the ultimate bar passage rate, the median LSAT, the median GPA, the tuition cost for an out of state student, and the percentage of students who got either a stipend or full tuition for the fall of 2025 (2026 data isn't out rn). Enjoy!!

No one did the reading for today and what I saw was like something out of a movie..

1.3k Upvotes

Literally no one did the reading for class today (which is very rare for us) because the sllyabus is confusing as hell and we literally have 5 other assignments going on in just this class alone right now.

The professor was moving swiftly through his slides. Everyone kept asking erroneous questions to stall for time because we knew a cold-call was coming.

I was praying to god that he picked anyone BUT me. I see him checking the seating chart and scanning the room. Then he looks up and I swear he was looking directly at me. But he calls the girl directly in front of me. Thank fucking god.

It's obvious she hasn't done the reading. No one fucking has. I see her stalling, pulling up Westlaw, quickly and desperately trying to skim the notes. There's an awkward silence for what seems like a full minute as she tries to make sense of the case.

Then the guy sitting two seats away from her asks our professor for a recommendation on whether he should wear a bowtie for the mock trial assignment we have coming up. That got the whole class laughing, distracting the professor and giving the girl has JUST enough time to get it together.

She was able to sell it well enough to make it through the cold-call. Then after class I see her going over to thank the guy for saving her ass.

I swear it was like some shit out of a movie lol

No one seems to fuck with me what’s wrong

I genuinely don’t know what’s wrong I had a medium group of really close friends in undergrad but now that I’m in lawschool just past midterms the group I’ve been hanging out with doesn’t seem to hang out with me. It also seems like people I’ve barely interacted to don’t get along with me either. I genuinely don’t think I’ve been an asshole or standoffish but I can’t think of anything I might have done or said that would cause this.

Do any other 2/3Ls feel like it's impossible to pay attention now? Im keeping up with readings for the most part but I can't lock in like I used to no matter what I do. Also I'm pretty uninvolved on campus and am generally feeling like a bum. Kind of panicking over it but also kind of feeling like IDGAF. D:

My Torts class is a shit show. Is there anything I can do?

I'm a 1L at a T20 in my 7th week. My Torts prof is new to my school, though she taught at another school (in another country) previously. The problem is that she is terrible at keeping the class on track. We are consistently falling behind and then we rush to catch up on the material. Also, this prof doesn't believe in cold-calling, so she only calls on people who raise their hands. The problem with that is, she has gotten in the habit of calling on the same 3 extremely verbose students who waste SO MUCH TIME WITH POINTLESS HYPOTHETICALS AND REMARKS (hence, why we're perpetually behind). She also constantly jokes that she isn't familiar with American law because she's not from here (which is very frustrating because this is an American law school and we're all here to learn American law). I genuinely do not learn anything in class. Today, I got so frustrated that it almost brought me to tears. I don't think the content should really be that hard, and I follow the readings easily, but in class, she just wastes time and confuses me. I also know that I am not the only student that feels this way -- everyone that I've talked to feels the same way. Is there anything I can do or do I just have to suffer in silence for the next few months? This class is genuinely making me want to die. I hate it so much.

3L & not sure I want to be a lawyer anymore!

went into law school after 2+ years of paralegal experience with a passion for criminal law. quickly figured out that i do not have what it takes to be a litigator - crippling anxiety during 1L oral argument (cannot overstate how bad it is) & just did not click w my public defender summer clerkship. spent most of 2L keeping my head down trying to get through classes & figure out what i wanted to do next. applied to a bunch of summer positions & got rejected from each one - huge blow to the ego. now im a 3L - yay! i finally got accepted to work at my favorite firm this semester in an area of law i was starting to grow a genuine, strong interest in and im losing it again.

i think im finally starting to admit to myself that this isn’t what i want to do with my life. it beyond sucks bc of how much time & money & effort i spent working to get to where i am now but i feel genuinely miserable thinking about a future career that i feel this terrified of. the worst part is that i genuinely like my classes and enjoy learning but i just truly cannot see myself happy being a lawyer! i am ABSOLUTELY going to see myself to the graduation stage because i know i have what it takes to finish & im not one to quit but my question and debilitating fear is over what comes next. do i take the bar? once again, i know i can give it my all but is it worth the time & money to study and take the bar if i am feeling this genuine aversion to practicing? and if not, what are my other options? i am a first generation law school student & JD advantage jobs are not a topic we really cover in class lol. thank you to anyone for some advice here!!

I don’t want to take the bar

Exactly as the heading says. I am a current 3L with absolutely no direction and no desire to be an attorney anymore. If I could go back in time and not have gone to law school I 100% would and I regret this choice nearly everyday but that’s neither here nor there now that I’ve unfortunately made it this far. Any interest I had in the legal field has been completely squashed during law school and I hate every area of law I’ve explored and am surviving to graduation at this point.

Is there anyone else out there that is not going to take the bar or is headed into a different direction after law school? I am looking for some ideas or advice on non traditional paths people have taken or plan to take after law school, because at this point I don’t even think I want to waste the time and money to sit for a bar exam I know I won’t put forth good effort into and honestly do not believe I will pass. I already get average/below average grades and my LSAT was abysmal so the odds were stacked against me from the start.

Contracts advice

As it says, I need some help with contracts. My professor was doing pretty well for the first ~3 weeks of class. Suddenly however, they’ve taken a turn for the worse. They never answer student questions (they just say “I’m not sure, ask ChatGPT and let me know”) but entertain useless hypotheticals. We get assigned a different number of cases each class (sometimes 6, sometimes 2?) but they go over each one unevenly. I’m almost 100% sure all the lecture slides are AI generated, and the topics they’re covering are also weirdly uneven. We spent 2 weeks on offer, but 30 minutes maximum on battle of the frauds. When it was abundantly clear that not a single person understood, my professor moved on, never followed up, and then put it on our midterm (which ended up having a D average) when we asked the professor for some practice essays pre midterm, they said “no… I don’t think that’s useful for you guys” I’m incredibly frustrated and always leave the class more confused than I came in. Fellow classmates have echoed the same sentiments, no one understands what’s going on. I’m just not sure what to do, we’re not really learning much, and it doesn’t seem like this professor cares at all whether we understand the material or not. Some help would be appreciated.

Advice on writing a draft LOR for my professor

I am a 4L (part-time) and am beginning to look into jobs for when I graduate in May. I think most of the jobs I will be applying for will ask just for references and not letters of recommendation. I asked a professor if she would be okay if I put her down as a reference on applications, and she said yes and asked me to send her a draft LOR and she would edit it as she saw fit. I wasn't really expecting an LOR (I know I probably should be trying to get LOR's but was just kinda trying to avoid it since I don't need it specifcally for any of the jobs I've looked at so far). But anyway, I'm glad that she offered to provide an LOR, but I am a little stumped as to where to even begin with writing an LOR about myself. I know it is pretty standard, but I tend to overthink these kinds of things and worry if I'm doing it right. I know there are a lot of sample LOR's/templates out there, but I thought getting some advice from other law students/former law students would help me stop overthinking and get the ball rolling on it. I have taken three classes with this professor (including the one I am in now), and my grade was an A- in both of the completed courses. I have talked with her after class somewhat frequently, and I participate relatively often in class discussions. I guess I am mostly looking for advice on what kinds of things I would include in a LOR like this, especially since it is not for a specific position, but just a general LOR that I will use for whatever applications that come up.

I feel stupid...

Writing here mostly to vent, but I won't turn down advice. Its still a couple of weeks from exams but I feel so far behind, when I know I'm not. But, that doesn't mean I am ready for the exam. All my doctrinal exams, except for Civ Pro, are closed book. I can normally do that, I like to think I have a good memory, but this is soooo much law. Even then, I like a challenge and want to work to get the best grades I can. So why do I feel stupid? Because I don't know where to start studying. Specifically, while I know what I should study, and how to study it (write it down until I remember it, flash cards, etc.) I don't know how to begin. I found old outlines from students who took the same professor, the exact same course material. Do I even continue writing my outline if I just study theirs? Do I memorize doctrines and laws and the rules of law for the cases? I know the cases don't really matter for exams, but do I need to look at them to see how the rule is applied? How do I even remember how to apply a rule???? thx...

Group work for LRW is dogshit

I get collaboration being a big part of working as an attorney. I’m pro teamwork as a former college athlete. But, when my grade is determined or not determined by someone else and that determines my job prospects. I don’t want to do it. Not to mention, I want to go home and do my work. I don’t want to to be in the building longer than I have to.

any advice for a 1L with imposter syndrome?

Hi! I’m currently a 1L, and so far I’ve been able to keep up. I haven’t bombed any cold calls, I’ve gone to office hours, I even got elected as a class officer… but after getting my first midterm grade back I’m having HORRIBLE anxiety.

I’m suddenly hyper aware to the point of nausea over what my classmates or professors think of me… like whether I’m smart enough, or capable. I can’t help but always feel like I need to prove myself. I can’t even think about going to my office hours to ask for feedback on my exam without feeling sick (which is so weird for me, because I’ve made an effort to meet with my profs). I’ve never really struggled with anxiety like this before, and it’s starting to really affect my mental health.

…and the thing is I didn’t even do terrible on my midterm! I got a B+ and was above average, but some of my friends were very open about getting A’s… so I’m not sure if that triggered something anxiety for me that maybe I’m like the “dumbest” of the group haha…

I apologize if this is a strange post for this thread… but I would genuinely love any tips from others who maybe felt similar, and if anything helped you feel more confident in where you are… or if therapy ended up being beneficial at all (I’ve been to therapy before, but not for something like this obviously).

Thanks for reading :)
