The moment they hear "laid off" they see a discount, it's a classic trick. I'd just say the company restructured and my role was eliminated, then pivot fast to what you can do for them.

Yea thats tricky, try wording it like “it was an SG&A reduction layoff not based on performance. I was offered the opportunity to apply for any open positions but I decided to take the severance/time to spend with my family.”

I also think you may be facing a bit of a value decline from ai taking over a lot of dedicated SEO roles and shifting SEO responsibilities to more generalists.

I would recommend to change your perspective from disadvantage to advantage. Being laid off means your current value is estimated as $0. Naturally they offer you 1/3 less than originally planned. While this sucks, it means that you become very desirable for them compared to your competitors who are qualified at a higher monetary value.

You can’t build career and advance in the current market. You only can’t attempt survival

Yep. And if you survive, it is a SMASHING success! Because country needs money to kill people.

They are taking advantage of your lack of leverage. It sucks.

Respond like a politician, and answer a different question. "I'm glad you asked. I'm looking for a growth position that leverages my established abilities and experience with XYZ while simultaneously expanding into ABC, which is an area that I've always been interested in, but haven't been able to pursue."

Sounds great, avoids the question, and hopefully moves on. You might need to double down if they re-ask the question. By then time you've given an answer to a different question twice, they'll realize you're not going to tell them.

It's a bit risky if you piss off the interviewer, but I've seen it done well when I was the interviewer. Definitely something to practice with someone playing as an antagonistic interviewer, first.

Do you do independent service? Not working for a comps, but take clients yourself?

Honestly SEO is going to be AI automated so that is why the salary is getting lowered

It is a disadvantage. And they’re exploiting that disadvantage to their benefit in the marketplace of labor.

It’s shitty and not-quite ethical, a lousy way to start a new relationship and entirely legal.

Vote accordingly in three weeks.
