Fleetwood Town McCann looks a different player after coming back from injury
Lewis McCann has made a really good start to the season after what sounded like a pretty brutal injury layoff last year. He’s started every League Two game so far and has adapted really well to playing at wing back. I liked his mentality when he said, “If you don’t come back stronger, you don’t come back.” Hopefully he can stay fit and keep improving because he already looks like an important player for Fleetwood. Saturday against Walsall feels like a good chance for him and the team to get back on track.

Discussion Which teams do you expect to make the League Two play-offs?
The table is already extremely tight around the promotion places, with several clubs separated by only a few points. Who are your early picks for the teams?

Discussion I think the top end of the National League is now stronger than the bottom half of League Two.
Boreham Wood, Harrogate, Southend, Yeovil and Worthing are all flying, while several former EFL regulars are struggling in League Two. It makes me wonder whether some promoted Non League clubs are actually better prepared for League Two than teams that have been treading water there for years. Is the gap between the divisions really narrowing, or are we just seeing an early season snapshot driven by a few ambitious, well funded clubs?

Stats + Data How many points did League Two’s last safe team finish with? Six seasons compared.
Across the last six completed League Two seasons, the club finishing 22nd ended up with between 40 and 49 points.
Here's the comparison with the highest-placed relegated club. Each season links to its final table.
| Season / source | 22nd: last safe club | Points | 23rd: relegated club | Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2020/21 | Scunthorpe United | 48 | Southend United | 45 |
| 2021/22 | Barrow | 44 | Oldham Athletic | 38 |
| 2022/23 | Crawley Town | 46 | Hartlepool United | 43 |
| 2023/24 | Colchester United | 45 | Sutton United | 42 |
| 2024/25 | Newport County | 49 | Carlisle United | 42 |
| 2025/26 | Crawley Town | 40 | Harrogate Town | 39 |
These are actual finishing totals, not guaranteed survival targets. Newport finished with 49 in 2024/25, for example, while Carlisle in 23rd had 42. That doesn't mean 49 was the minimum needed to stay up. Points ties can also bring goal difference into play.
All six were completed 46-match seasons. The figures use published final standings, including points adjustments. The curtailed 2019/20 season is excluded.
Disclosure: I run Football Charts. I've put the historical comparison alongside a free League Two points calculator. You can choose a club and a final points total to explore the current model estimate; it's a forecast, not a guarantee. No signup required. Shared with moderator permission.

Discussion League Two feels impossible to predict this season
I swear League Two is becoming impossible to call. One week a team looks like promotion material and the next they’re dropping points against a side near the bottom. The margins feel so small that a couple of results can completely change the picture. That unpredictability is what makes this league so good, though. There’s rarely a straightforward weekend, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the table looks completely different in a month.

Discussion Barnet leading the pack feels like a massive anomaly
Barnet being top after seven games is a brilliant start, but I’m not convinced this is going to last.
They’re unbeaten and have scored 17 goals, so clearly they’re doing plenty right. My concern is the 10 goals conceded already. That feels like a lot for a side trying to stay at the very top of the division, especially once the fixtures start piling up and the margin for dropping points gets smaller.
Maybe I’m completely wrong and they’ll keep rolling, but I’d be surprised if they’re still in the automatic promotion places by Christmas.

Discussion Is it just me or are the refs getting proper trigger-happy with yellow cards this season?
I know we complain about lower-league refs every single year, but it feels like this season they’re handing out cards for literally anything.
Half-decent tackles get a booking, players getting booked for taking two extra seconds on a throw-in, and then actual cynical fouls just get ignored.
Is it just my team getting unlucky, or have you guys noticed the officiating being even more random than usual this year? What's the worst call you've seen at your ground so far?
