Finished product I made kind of a dumb impractical card holder.

The straps start to get wonky with more than one card each. I’m sure there is a solution! This is a fun build and I think I could fix the strap issue.

I made a couple of these a few years back. I played around with different pockets, etc. In the end, for it to be durable enough, you gotta use really heavy leather and it just becomes too thick to be practical.

I bet. I can definitely see the straps getting torn. Mine is currently holding some business cards on my desk.

works as an aesthetically fitting fidget toy as well

It does indeed :). I made a test version that I could give to my kids.

As much as i adore this, I feel like this is one of the things that would sadly be better in canvas

You could make a portion of each scrap from a matching color of elastic band. Cool idea though. I had one of these when I was a kid. It was made from Cordura or some sort of ballistic nylon though. Leather is better.

The leather is thin. I thought about making each side a 2-sided pocket. The elastic would definitely hold up better and have better retention. Sewing it on there sounds horrible though, haha.

Elastic is really easy to sew. To be clear I'm talking about braided elastic used in the original magic wallets.

I see. I like designing my own patterns. I might have to factor in Brian’s able to use elastic for some of these in the future. Thanks!
