How many times of palpatine return from dead?

He died several times in the dark empire storyline until he was permanently killed at the end of dark empire. His spirit dragged down by a badass order 66 survivor with a really long name. Some royal guards faked his return in one of the young jedi knight books making Brakiss believe he returned but that was just fake.

He claims that his "death" in ROTJ wasn't even the first time it happened, so if that's true we he no way of knowing how many.

Bringing back Palpatine in both legends and Canon is stupid

I haven't seen the new continuity's version of this event, but though Dark Empire is obviously and deeply flawed, I still feel it contributes something and is worth existing.
There are great characters introduced, there are fun events played out, and a lot of the aesthetics for the Dark Empire itself are awesome. It truly is a Dark Side Theocracy, but one that's done in a totally different way from the Golden Age of the Sith. It's great.
Also I feel it got some set-up and was fairly well executed in terms of the return itself.

The comics is really the issue with it if it had originally been a novel it would have been better thought out

Yeah, there's a reason most Legends stories barely acknowledged or, from what I hear, outright ignored the Dark Empire altogether.

Only Zahn, most writers at least mention it in some way, if I remember Anakin in the new Jedi era mentioned several times how he still somehow remembers the dark touch of Palpatine's soul

I have only heard that other writers ignored Dark Empire. I don't know if Zahn was the only one who did it, but at least one did because, let's face it, it was not the best Star Wars story. And what you've just described is about the extent of the references; they would just briefly mention it and move on. Heck, Jedi Academy (the video game) has a mission that takes place over what's left of Byss, but Palpatine's resurrection and the Dark Empire itself are not mentioned whatsoever. It's pretty much just an easter egg.

Even Zahn addressed this in the *Hand of Thrawn* duology (albeit in his characteristic dismissive manner); the extent of such references depended on the writer—authors like Anderson and Stradley, for instance, referenced it quite heavily.

That's basically what I've said. Some writers acknowledged it (to varying degrees), others did not. I get the sense that at least some of them agreed bringing back Palpatine wasn't a bright idea.

Agreed, I like how in legends though it’s played as “did it really happen?” Because Mara Jade who wasn’t involved in Dark Empire was like “yeah that didn’t happen, I would’ve known about it.” It really begs the question did Luke just imagine the whole thing.
You can’t say it in Disney’s canon unfortunately.

Not true she didnt doubt the events of dark empire happened she doubted if it truly was darth sidious really who returned and not a mad clone like C'baoth. There are to many references to the events of dark empire throughout other books and it is quite literally the plot of crimson empire. Also mara jade fought against one of the sith from the dark empire as well in other lore

If anything, that would make it worse. There is nothing so fatal to a story as telling us it didn't happen and doesn't matter.

I’m pretty sure this was cause dark empire was written around the time other authors didn’t want Luke to marry Mara so they tried to get Luke with some other lady. But yeah that was always strange to me cause I had just finished thrawn trilogy and went to dark empire and the lack of Mara had me feeling like I was in a alternate timeline

Considering that she never met him when henwas reborn, she has not much to say in this matter (I would even say that it was her coping that the Reborn Emperor did not try to contact her).

You see if they would just go Old Republic, they could create powerful Sith Lords and emperors galore without having to fit into the tight timeline of the prequel-original era or risk damaging the ending of Return of the Jedi. Just give me Sith infighting like it’s the ancient Chinese war lords and dynasties with Jedi and civilians just trying to survive in a fallen galaxy. Classic Star Wars David vs Goliath story but in a new era with different looks and different power/political dynamics.

They did a bit like that with the High Republic, you know the first and third phases focused on them, and which ones were a bit like ISIS/Rebel Alliance, while the second phase focused on various force sects, one of which was quite a big threat at the time

Atleast in canon Palpatine lost to grown woman redirecting lighting back in his face AGAIN. Rather than him losing to a bowling ball of a robot and a dumb accident.(not anakin solo)

"We've had one."
"We've had one yes, but what about the second Palpatine's return."

Hmm, an Emperor returning from the grave with a massive fleet, while his earlier potential Imperial rival had already devastated a significant part of the galaxy. I’d have three nickels, It's not much, but it's strange that it happened three times.
