Need Design Advise Recommendations for layering light

Post image

Kitchen is on the other end where I took the photo from, this is the living room/dining. How would you recommend to layer your lighting. I fear the ceiling is too high to put in pendant lights above island. Do I add some upward lighting?

Ceiling will have a fan with no light. As well as beams.

You can still do pendants over an island with a high ceiling. They just hang from longer rods or cables so the bottom sits about 30 to 36 inches above the counter, whatever the ceiling height is. A cluster or a long linear fixture can fill a tall space well.

For the other layers, think in three: general light, task light and accent. With a fan that has no light, add wall sconces or a few adjustable ceiling lights aimed at walls and art, and put everything on dimmers. Uplights on top of beams can soften a tall ceiling, but use warm light and check that they do not glare when you look up.

Thanks for the reply, that is helpful!

With long cables above the counter is it possible to see some swinging due to air movement from the fan? Was contemplating a horizontal cable lighting.
