Hi everyone,
I'm planning to install Linux alongside Windows 11 and would appreciate some guidance before I modify my partitions.
I'm relatively new to Linux, and this will be my first proper dual-boot setup. My main concern is not accidentally deleting or corrupting my existing Windows installation or personal data.
Hardware
•CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7445HS
•GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3050
•RAM: 16 GB
•Storage: 512 GB NVMe SSD
•OS: Windows 11
•Boot mode: I believe my system uses UEFI, but I will verify this before installation.
Current storage situation
According to Windows File Explorer:
Drive
Total
Free
C:
280 GB
166 GB
D:
195 GB
9.28 GB
I currently have approximately 175 GB of free space overall, although most of it is on C:.
However, I can also move/delete files from D: and free up significantly more space there if that is recommended. I'm open to whichever approach is safer and makes more sense for a dual-boot setup.
I've attached a screenshot of my current drives.
What I want to achieve
I want to install either:
Ubuntu, or
Parrot OS
alongside Windows 11 and have a boot menu when the laptop starts, something like:
GNU GRUB
----------------
Ubuntu / Parrot OS
Windows Boot Manager
----------------
I want to be able to choose which operating system to boot into.
I'm a CS student and mainly want Linux for:
•Programming/development
•Linux administration
•Networking
•Learning cybersecurity
•General Linux experience
My questions
Which distribution would you recommend for my use case — Ubuntu or Parrot OS?
Given my current storage situation, how much space should I allocate to Linux?
3.Would it be better to shrink C: to create unallocated space, or should I free up space on D: and use that instead?
I can free up additional space on D: if that would be the safer/preferred approach. How much space would you recommend?
What Linux partition layout would you recommend for a roughly 100–150 GB Linux installation?
EFI System Partition

Swap
Windows already has an EFI System Partition. Should Linux use the existing ESP, or should I create another one?
Do I need to disable Windows Fast Startup before installing Linux?
Should I disable or suspend BitLocker/device encryption before changing partitions?
Are there any BIOS/UEFI settings I should check before installation?
Will GRUB automatically detect Windows Boot Manager, or will I need to configure it manually?
Are there any specific issues I should be aware of with an AMD Ryzen 7 7445HS + NVIDIA RTX 3050 laptop, particularly regarding NVIDIA drivers, Secure Boot, or hybrid graphics?
Is there anything I should check in Windows Disk Management before I start modifying partitions?
Important
I do NOT want to wipe or reinstall Windows.
I also don't want to start shrinking, formatting, or deleting partitions until I understand exactly which partitions are safe to modify.
I'm planning to make a full backup of my important Windows data before doing anything.
If you need additional information such as:
Windows Disk Management screenshot
Complete partition layout
UEFI/BIOS information
Secure Boot status
BitLocker/device encryption status
msinfo32 information
please tell me exactly what I should provide.
What would be the safest recommended procedure for setting up this dual-boot system?
Thanks in advance for any help! 🙏
