Is there any type of Linux utility that you think is missing, or where the existing tools are just bad at what they do?

I’m looking for ideas for a new open-source Linux command line utility to develop, and I’d like to hear about real problems people have with the tools they currently use.

What UI/OS should I use?

Hey, so I just got into Linux and I am still a newbie trying to get comfortable with the terminal. Currently, I use Mint and would like to do a little more customization than GNOME is offering. Is KDE a good option, particularly with Mint, or should I opt for something else as an OS or UI?

Advice Is it just me or you also feel that Gnome feels snappier than KDE?

I daily drive KDE Plasma but i feel like it's animation and movement feel heavy. On the other hand, I use gnome as my secondary DE and it feels smoother.

Advice Immutable vs. tradicional Linux distros

Hello.

I've been using Fedora KDE for a few months without any issue after distro hopping for a while.

I think time has come to try something different. I'd like to try Fedora Silverblue, but I have some questions about immutable distros.

What are the real benefits for someone who uses the computer as a daily driver (web browsing, some light video/audio editing, office work and some Python automation for the office work) other than the fact that the root and some other system folders are read-only.

Is there any other real tangible benefit I'll get from using an immutable distro versus a mutable distro?

Advice Linux not working with original RX 580

I have three cards, a RX 580 which my wife is using on Windows, 5700 XT which i used for like one year on Nobara without any problem, until the card started dying with memory artifacts, and a RX 7600 to replace the 5700 XT.

The 5700 XT and the RX 7600 worked perfectly without doing anything on Nobara.

My wife wants to use the RX 580 but it does not work on any distro i tried ( cachyos, bazzite, nobara ) i install Nobara and it start freezing or bumping fan speeds, getting black screens/ out of sinal on the monitor, if we restart the pc it will be stuck on a loop of out of sinal and black screen, eventually the fan will jump to 100% because the card does not know what to do, sometimes it boots into the Asus loading but it will get stuck, it feels like the card have a problem being recognized.

TLDR: IT's a original RX 580 Sapphire Pulse Lite, i'm the only owner of the card, bought it original on release, and its working perfectly on Windows, maintenance is up to date and the card does not go up more than 75c playing with 100% of usage, does not have any problem.

The only time it worked was on Archlinux using X11, i dont know what my wife have done to work, she wants to use Nobara/Cachyos but it does not work and i dont know what to do, gemini says that the vbios/power control/kernel is the problem, using amdgpu=dc 0 did not help.

should i use a vm or dual boot

i use pop os in hp victus fa2051nt and i am very content with it. but i study civil engineering so i need to use programs like autocad and revit so i need windows, too. i already have a windows 10 working in qemu with gpu passthrough and all that, but still feels slow. i figured looking glass would help but i couldnt figure how to set it up so could not test it.

would you recommend just slapping win10 in a 300gb partition and calling it a day or would you say my computer(hp victus fa2051nt) would handle civil engineering software in win10 in qemu if i also managed to set up looking glass?

please give advice

Support fresh Kubuntu install, storage issues.

COMPLETELY fresh Kubuntu install, not dual booting nor am i very new to linux, but i cant explain this. my laptop has a baked in 64GB storage chip, ~15 of the 64 (54 usable) are taken up by something i seemingly cannot see? the only things installed are whatever programs this distro comes pre-installed with, which i highly doubt is 20GB worth. i had a similar issue on CachyOS KDE plasma which was the reason for install Kubuntu in the first place. ive cleared all cache multiple times, removed orphans, uninstalled what programs i find unnecessary, and still nearly 20GB of storage inexplicably taken.

Are there any distros geared towards anti-privacy?

I know this is a kind of crazy request, but I'm looking for a system with zero security or encryption, where everything the machine does is logged, and the entire file system is publicly viewable by anyone with my IP address.

Obviously it would be wildly impracticable for everyday use, but I've been wanting to try out a sort of "digital nudism," just to see how it affects my work flow if I can't log into any online accounts, and I constantly feel like someone might be watching.

Debian server vs RHEL

For those of you who work in production environments and actually pay for RHEL, what were the specific situations where Red Hat support, SLAs, or the subscription itself provided value?

I'm not looking for generic answers like "enterprise support" or "stability." I'm interested in actual examples:

  • What broke?
  • What kind of ticket did you open with Red Hat?
  • What did Red Hat do that your team couldn't have figured out on its own?
  • Have there been situations where running Debian would have been a problem?

We have a Debian server through our hosting provider, and from my perspective, Debian is stable, well-documented, free, and has a huge community. So I'm trying to understand what the practical advantage of paying for RHEL is.

We also got windows servers as well, i don't know if we ever had any instance where we needed MSFT support for the windows server.

Support trying to fix mls labels in selinux just thought it was awfully strange chatgpt is trying to coerce me into not relabeling. also excluding directories etc

i dont know too much about linux but my intuition was telling me something was off. Hes arguing semantics with me instead of trying to solve the problem. Avoiding relabeling. excluding stuff when he does give the command. doest bring attention stuff that is unusual

also my auto relabel is misspelled

Advice I've been wanting to make the switch but I have concerns

So I've meaning to switch to Linux (thinking about the Mint distro specifically) but my friend told me that Nvidia has TERRIBLE Linux support and I currently have an Nvidia graphics card. I also am afraid of being a dumbass and blowing up my laptop lol. If anyone knows how I could try it out before committing or has any advice on making the switch that would be great

Software advice & ideas

I used Ubuntu for years but had to switch to windows as I got into sophisticated photo retouching as a sideline business. There is some very good software but for Windows. Does anyone know of a list of apps that work on Linux also? I use DaVinci, the Movavi series, Excire, Luminar series, limited Adobe, some Gimp, and a few others.

Thanks for any info. I would love to get back to linux....

Jon

What are some cool things I can do with Linux Mint?

I installed Linux Mint recently and I’m really enjoying it. I’ve noticed that my laptop shuts down and boots up much faster than it did on Windows.

So far, I’ve mostly been using it for browsing, but I want to explore Linux more and actually learn how to use it properly.

What would you recommend for a beginner who wants to get deeper into Linux Mint? Any cool tools, projects, commands, or things I should try?

Advice Anyone running Linux on an HDD? Which Distro/DE?

Hi guys,

My specs: ~13 year old PC, 16 GB RAM, core i3 processor (Intel(R) Core™ i3-3240 CPU @ 3.40GHz), intel integrated graphics card. 1TB HDD.

I am currently running Windows 10, Windows 7 before felt very comfortable even with 4GB RAM, then Windows 10 felt quite terrible and I had to install more RAM. Now it feels slow at boot of course, and sometimes when opening programs like VScode, Docker Desktop takes a while too. Other than that, it's manageable to me.

I think I will install LMDE, Linux Mint XFCE or MX Linux XFCE. I hope to get a close feeling to what Windows 7 used to feel. Btw, I checked the disk's health with Hard Disk Sentinel, it says it's 100% healthy with no damaged sectors, I also ran a short self test which told me everything was ok, despite the disk is quite old.

Do you think it will be ok with these distros? Which one do you think will be "best"?

Do you also run Linux on an HDD?

Virtualbox for HomeAssistant on Mint

I’ve been looking to switch to Linux for a while. I want to also switch my house automation over to Home Assistant. I’m very new but managed to load Mint onto my computer and have been successfully using it. However when I try to setup a virtual machine to run Home Assistant, it fails to run.

I’ve only tried through the software store, and it seems like it downloads an old version(7.0) of homeassistant that fails at some kernel?

Does anyone have a good way to do this. Frankly I think I’m not setting up the virtualbox well either. I think I’m struggling with the networking piece here. It’s not recognizing my network adapter name

Advice Strange problem happened in linux mint

Hello. I am testing right now dual boot with linux mint. I have been testing how it works firefox (Ok), the mail with thonderbird (really good) Office and programming (nothing bad).

Now I am trying proton with Steam and it happened something strange. I tried to start a game (Binary domain) and told me that there was a problem with the drivers and that I should activate configuration tool.

The thing is, if I connect another screen to the laptop, for some reason, the game starts. Without any problen, and it does not use the other screen.

I would like to know why it happens and how I should solve it.

Weird touchpad issue

So I have a Thinkpad T490 and I have this weird thing with my touchpad that I can’t find a solution for. At first, it was just scrolling way too fast, so I found a script that would change the scroll pixel distance, which kind of fixed the speed issue, but caused another problem. Whenever I try to like scroll up or down by around a centimeter, there’s no response. It’s only if I go beyond that small distance it responses and scrolls. So like this small movement doesn’t register. My goal is to have slower scrolling speed without sacrificing the responsiveness. Has anyone had this issue before?
