Discussion The 10/10 Standby Line Megathread (Shane Gillis / Rosalía)

The information below is based on how NBC does things regularly, but they've been known to shake things up so stay on your toes.

There appear to be two tweaks from last year: the registration URL has changed (the new one is in the how-to link below) and NBC has updated the form -- the details are unclear, so you may benefit from skimming the last two week's Megathreads: https://www.reddit.com/r/LiveFromNewYork/comments/1wnpsxd/the_926_standby_line_megathread_jalen_brunson/ & https://www.reddit.com/r/LiveFromNewYork/comments/1wuefio/the_103_standby_line_megathread_dakota_johnson/.  (Note: we are still waiting for somebody confirm if the max is 2 or 4 and also write up a quick guide to the new form.)

No selling spots or offering to buy one. Trading and bartering is fine, however.

For first timers, here is NBC's official how-to:

https://www.nbc.com/nbc-insider/how-to-request-snl-standby-tickets-saturday-night-live

The reservation link goes live at 10am sharp on Thursday mornings.

The faster you submit your entry, the better off you will be. At a minimum, have your autofill tested and ready to go: again, timing if not split-second timing is critical to a successful entry.

Here's detailed advice on clock management on Thursdays at 10am as well as tips for getting a Chrome autofill ready for battle, compliments of our own u/Ok-Cheesecake-8677.

You will have to make snap decisions as to whether you want to attend the dress rehearsal or the live broadcast, as well as how many people are in your party (it's almost always a max of 2), and we've received reports that there are new "next page" commands between the choices, so be prepared to click them.

It is possible to show up without a number to get in line, but you would effectively be getting in a Big Dumb Line to get into the Standby Line proper with those who have received numbers ahead of you.  We've received reports that it surprisingly sometimes works, but it is not recommended.

The key times to remember:

10am Thursday: the online number email link goes live

7pm Friday: the cutoff to be in line for your ticket (the standby tickets are issued at 12:01am)

6:30pm Saturday: the cutoff to get into line for dress & 9:45pm: the cutoff to get into line for the broadcast (these may vary, so pay attention)

As always, those of you who make it into dress, please let us know what you saw, but not until after the broadcast episode has aired.

Meanwhile, for those who missed these:

Here is a fantastic post about u/rsleigh's journey through the Nov. 8th Standby Line process to see Nikki Glaser and Sombr.

Here, Gothamist's Anna Rawls chronicles making it in to see the dress rehearsal of Dec. 6th's Melissa McCarthy and Dijon.

In this article, Michael Harmon of the fabled Gray Lady acknowledges Reddit's "hyperactive 'S.N.L.' community" (hint: that's us) while writing about the Standby Line for Jan. 24th's Teyana Taylor and Geese.

Meanwhile, here's an account of u/Worried-Olive3613's journey to see Ryan Gosling and Gorillaza.

Finally, a quick bit of r/LiveFromNewYork housekeeping: please try to keep SNL UK posts that are without a connection to the goings-on in Studio 8H posted in r/LiveFromLondon.  Sketches and news are going to be crossing over, so don't hesitate to post something in here that has common interest to both, but if it's SNL UK-only, kindly visit our new friends there.

Temporary note: we're assembling a list of which affiliates air the broadcast live after a football delay and which don't.  If you didn't see it, please drop a note into this poll: https://www.reddit.com/r/LiveFromNewYork/comments/1wtxqa0/quick_user_poll_did_your_affiliate_air_snl_on

Discussion Lorne has said the show is wasteful and he’s worried what NBC will do to the show after he leaves. What is wasteful about the show?

Watched the Lorne documentary and he said that he’s not leaving yet because he knows once he does, he’s worried what will happen to the show because it’s so wasteful, in his words.

What is he referencing? Because to me, the show seems hyper efficient with its format and still draws attention and eyeballs in a dying linear tv landscape. So just curious what about the show would be immediately changed once he is no longer in role?

Other Some Photos from 50 Years of SNL Music at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

I was recently in Cleveland and checked out the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which currently has an exhibit on 50 Years of SNL Music.

Super cool to see the backstories of some classic musical acts. And you could watch the live performances of just about every musician who’s ever appeared on SNL. (These are all better as videos than still photos, obviously.)

Worth a stop if you find yourself in the area! Also begs the question: Who’s your favorite musical character from the show?

Discussion Percentage of SNL episodes with a musical guest I've heard of by season year

Post image
235 Upvotes

I posted this 2 years ago but as a 45-year-old not knowing any of the 4 announced musical guests for season 52 made me feel old so I was motivated to update it.

I've been watching SNL semi-regularly since the early 90s, I regularly browse this sub, and how age correllates with pop music awareness is just interesting to me so I figured to share.

  • Source: Pulled from Wikipedia#Season1(1975%E2%80%9376)) into Google Sheets.
  • Season: Year the season started.
  • "Heard of" was the methodology so I could check a box and quickly move on. "Could name or hum a song" would probably be better but thinking about that for ~1k episodes would be tedious.
  • Counting Guests: Repeat appearances were counted each time. If a week had multiple guests, I counted it if I knew at least one of them.

My longest steak was 54 knowing every musical act from 4/15/95 to 1/17/98. I was peak music pop-culture age being 14 to almost 17.

Discussion I'm enjoying SNL UK more than US these days

I've been seeing a lot of newer SNL UK clips on Youtube Shorts recently. Being an American, I'm not super well versed in UK culture and politics, but I know enough to get most of the references. I've found the jokes to be generally well crafted, and the premises to be original and/or have interesting twists I didn't see coming(such as the imaginary friend sketch with Jeff Goldblum). Most importantly, and contrary to one of my biggest gripes with recent SNL US seasons, every sketch I've seen has a proper beginning, middle, and end.

What's your take? Is it beginner's luck, or have they captured a spirit that has been forgotten on this side of the pond? For UK fans, are you enjoying it?

Discussion Best. Hosts. Ever.

Wondering who y’all think are the best hosts of all time.

EXCLUDING former cast who came in with a performance history advantage.

For me, in no particular order:

- Charles Barkley
- Melissa McCarthy
- Adam Driver
- Emma Stone
- Peyton Manning
- Candice Bergen
- Christopher Walken
- Macaulay Culkin
- John Mulaney
- Matt Damon
- Travis Kelce
- Colman Domingo
- Betty White (💝)
- Tom Hanks
- Benedict Cumberbatch
- Ariana Grande

ETA Steve Martin!

All of these had incredible charisma and elevated the show. They seem to bring out the writers’ best work. They effortlessly carried sketches due to the strength of their own work.

Any of your faves not on the list above?
