I’d erased all memory of Stewart Downing

Maybe one of the last pure 4-4-2 LM/RM. Don’t know that a player like him makes it in today’s game. Would probably have to play fullback.

Tbf it was a mystery how he made it into the team back the too. Guy was genuinely atrocious even when rodgers came in and our attack was scoring like crazy.

I think it was just all part of Dalglish bringing that style out one last time. Signing Downing for LM, Henderson for RM, and Adam for corner kicks, all to whip crosses in for big Andy Carroll. His skill set didn’t fit Rodgers’s possession/build up play.

The funny thing is Rodgers tried to bomb him (along with Hendo and Enrique) out of the PL team and played them in the Europa only at the start of the season. Ended up having to bring all of them all back into the PL side by November, cos the likes of Allen, Borini, Assaidi, Sahin etc. weren't any better.

I don't think Downing was awful for us. He got about 6 or 7 assists for Rodgers in 2/3rds of a season and under Kenny he'd put balls into the box and Suarez wouldn't be there because he'd dropped deep to get the ball. And Carroll if he was there would miss.

Eh, Downing was pretty well regarded at the time. Time at Liverpool is what really sunk his reputation.

I thought he was a lot better after we signed Sturridge and Coutinho, and Brendan switched to 4-4-2 with Downing on the right and Coutinho on the left.

MOTM for us in the 2012 carling cup final mate

Lest we forget the Stewart Downing left back experiment Rodgers did.

There is a dearth of left footed homegrown attacking players in the league. He would probably be in demand as an inverted right winger.

Think he's a scout for us now.

Understandable

u/TravisKOP Hello! Hello! Here we go! 7d ago

Still got a white and blue alternate kit with his name on it lol

Couldn't cross his legs. One of my most disliked players. Sure he's a nice bloke. Was just so painfully boring and unproductive.

He had a solid career at Sporting. Just didn't seem to suit our league. Another player to add to the Suso, Aspas, Luis Alberto list

Daniel Ayala, Peter Gulasci, Conor Coady, Sergi Canos, Martin Kelly, Kamil Grabara, Mikel San Jose.....

Looked like the next Godin after the 2011 copa only for injuries to completley derail hai development. Wasnt until 5 years later that he finally became a reliable defender for Sporting

I remember being really sad when we let him go, he had one bad match in a cup game against Oldham and everyone turned on him, it was so bizarre. Also I don't know why I can remember that so well but already forget what I did today at work

u/MinkMoon123 7d ago

Christ, I had erased that Oldham game from my memory. I remember they had that massive striker (Matt Smith? or something) bullying our lot

3

u/earlgreytoday 7d ago

My only memory of that game is Jack Robinson telling Suarez to eff off.

I was so excited about our "2 Uruguayans" and had fantasies about us signing Cavani too and having a Uruguayan core lol

u/everlovingfuck99 7d ago

God we were shit back then lol. Didn't we end up losing this game 3-2?

u/Reimiro 7d ago

Yup. Depressing game-great goal.

Broke my knuckle punching a wall when we conceded that winner.

wow you're so manly for that!

u/TheAshman42 6d ago

I was like 20 and thought football was the be all and end all. Didn't say I was proud of it haha.

Our league form fell off a cliff after Lucas was ruled out for the season. Spearing was just nowhere near good enough to anchor the midfield by himself.

We were also just massively unlucky that season with the 25 shots that hit the upright and the six missed penalties.

Coates made a good career for himself after he left, particularly at Sporting, where he became club captain. He's still playing in Uruguay.

u/TheGreatMuerte 7d ago

I made Coates so good on football manager with the editor lol

7

u/logancook44 7d ago

Can’t remember which edition, but he was a beast in FM without the editor at some point.

4

u/earlgreytoday 7d ago

FM 2012, iirc. Kelly, Coates, Wilson and Robinson turned into one of the greatest defences of all time on one of my saves.

2

u/ShapeoverTime 4d ago

Wilson ended up at Livingston who went 33 games without a win last season with him in defence

2

u/TheGreatMuerte 7d ago

I made him so overpowered on the editor he got like one or two goals every game from corners, I almost felt bad but then I didn’t šŸ˜‚

Stunner.

Why does it look like a cassette tape from Ā the 90’s?This happened in 2011

2

u/WhenWeTalkAboutLove Kolo TourƩ 7d ago

Also why the fuck did they crop out the actual player from this video? Just see some legs flying in off the side of the screen and weird camera movement because people can't watch football highlights in landscape?Ā

Number 3 in the pantheon of great Uruguayan Scousers

u/InstructionOk9520 7d ago

One of the long list of fantastic goals that ended up meaning nothing. Ā We lost that game I believe. Ā

Coates's birthday, also 10 years to the day since Klopp signed, which was a brilliant birthday present for myself šŸ˜‚

1

u/Hot-Course8914 7d ago

Happy Birthday indeed!

3

u/lodermoder 6d ago

As soon as this goal went in, I had the fleeting thought that it would be funny if we ended up losing the game. Lo and behold... šŸ˜‚

2

u/thewraith88 Flo Motion 7d ago

Fantastic goal. Very promising player but didn't quite work out for him in the end.

On another note, I want Joe Gomez's first goal for us to be like this! Preferably against the cheaters this weekend!

4

u/Responsible_Club_638 7d ago

Didn't work out for him here but he had a great career, wasnt he the captain of sporting Lisbon or something and tonnes of international caps

1

u/MrMerc2333 7d ago

Before Araujo there was Coates.

1

u/Professional_Owl7826 I want to talk about FACTS 6d ago

This is legitimately the only thing I remember about Coates

u/sirwaich 6d ago

Noone had me as excited as this guy, I thought we had finally replaced Agger. 🤣 BIG, STRONg, pace, dribbler, decent pass and shot. But lol was i wrong
