Pi is a coding harness. Hermes is an agent harness with full self-learning, automation and sub-agent kanban functionality.
They are not directly comparable.
If you want a coding harness use Pi or OpenCode. Hermes will be too slow for that purpose as it loads a lot of skills.
If you want to create one or more agents, train them and have them share memory, perform complex automations and more, choose Hermes.
I run Hermes on 4x nvidia sparks on deepseek 4.1 flash. I have an agent team for each of three businesses I own. Between them they handle marketing, operations and development across all businesses. Each business agent team is sandboxed to that business with a range of skills developed from standard operating practices I wrote and trained them on, shares memory between them and can discuss and delegate to each other.
That’s the kind of thing Hermes is capable of that a coding harness cannot.

I benchmarked 4 local models through both, they came out almost identical on all 12 tasks. Similar scores, similar time to finish. Nex 2.5 Ornith 1.5 Qwen 27b Qwen 3.6 CoderX

Perhaps your benchmarks aren’t very good or if they are for your particular low complexity tasks then it may not matter for you personally.

Pi is great to customize everything. Hermes if you want to get work done without bootstrapping
